This is the bottom half of the table:
Somst 10 3 4 0 3 0 116 Notts 10 2 4 0 4 0 103 Sssx 10 3 5 0 2 0 102 Worcs 10 2 6 0 2 0 102 Hants 10 1 5 0 4 0 76
The weather forecast looks good for the duration of the match and James Askew has been working hard to get a pitch as good as last year's. Although both sides have the distractions of big T20 matches beforehand the winner here should have taken a big step towards first division security. With the newfound confidence in batting from the big score pitches at Birmingham and Taunton our top order should and will need to get a big first innings score. If the wicket behaves in any way like last year there will be something for the pace bowlers until the last day and then work for the spinners: an ideal match.
The big selection issue will be whether Jordan is fit to play. If he is he will naturally come in for Hobden and strengthen the team all round. Hobden has had to work very hard this season as stock as well as strike bowler and has had to play when he should have been in the nets or playing in the Seconds, trying to get that new approach to the wicket to work better. If Zaidi is fit his Birmingham runs and Taunton second innings bowling will keep him ahead of Burgoyne, and he and Wells could have the decisive role on Tuesday.
Joyce Wells Machan Nash Cachopa Wright Brown Zaidi Jordan Robinson Magoffin

I'd go along with that side, in fact I'd be delighted if we were able to name Jordan in the side

Even if it was Hobden you'd still have Jordan at eight and Robinson at nine, plus a proper amount of bowlers. Don't know if Jordan's fit though and obviously it should be Beer not Zaidi but hey-ho. We're in deep anyway, as are Notts, this is a big game.

Have to agree with fraudster that even if Jordan is fit, that side is a bowler light and has only three front-liners backed up by a trio of spinners of varying part-timeness.
But how is Jordan in the reckoning? I thought he was going to be out until end of July - and that was the England prognosis rather than a suspect Sussex one.
Forecast has got worse for day one on Sunday with rain arriving by lunch and persisting for the rest of the day. Rain in the Kent/Sussex weald next week was all too predictable. For several years now, the Tunbridge Wells festival has been a wash-out, so this season Kent moved it from June to the third week of July hoping to grab some better weather. That the rain would follow the change of fixture date was inevitable given the demons that seem to stalk Kent - and just up the road at Horsham it looks like Sussex will reap their neighbour's whirlwind, too!

I did say "if". If not we will still be a bowler light because Hobden will come in, and we still don't have another seamer to go to, unless as you suggested earlier, we ask if we can have our Linley back again, or if Robinson finds another guest lurking in the IIs (see Lilley of Yorks taking 4 for Sussex against Glamorgan). If the pitch plays anything like last year then the first innings could be hard on the bowlers of both sides, but helpful at the end of the game. In those circumstances, if you don't have a full hand of healthy seamers, better to play batsmen who can bowl. Just checked the weather after reading your comments and thanks, it looks to be threatening on Sunday and could be a problem later in the game www.worldweatheronline.com/Horsham-weather/West-Sussex/GB.aspxHaving spent a couple of weary hours this morning digging up potatoes, and wishing I had a pneumatic drill to make the job a little easier, I could quite welcome a little rain next week, but not when it's the only home match for 4 weeks in either direction.

Don't expect Jordan to be fit as I thought he was out until the end of July. I would bring in Yardy for Cachopa.
As for Notts it looks like 3 from 6 between Ball, Gurney, Wood, Keedy, Hutton and Fletcher. I would expect the first three to play.

Still no announcement about the squad, so perhaps there are some late injury tests still to be resolved.

Still no announcement about the squad, so perhaps there are some late injury tests still to be resolved. I suspect the reason is more likely to be that staff are enjoying a well-earned Saturday off and are too busy spending time with family, playing recreational cricket, watching the Test or having a round of golf to post squad names on the Sussex website. If it was down to late fitness tests, surely you would simply post the names of a large squad including those who are doubtful (wasn't there an occasion recently when the website named a 15 man squad for a home T20?) And to prove the point, Notts have named a 14 man squad: Jake Ball, Luke Fletcher, Harry Gurney, Alex Hales, Brett Hutton, Gary Keedy, Michael Lumb, Steven Mullaney, Samit Patel, Chris Read, Brendan Taylor, James Taylor, Riki Wessels and Luke Wood.

And indeed a pretty large squad was finally posted, just about everybody except Finch. Jordan and Shahzad are specifically listed as still injured, and Hatchett and Anyon are described as long-term absentees. BC Brown (wkt) PI Burgoyne C Cachopa ME Hobden EC Joyce (c) CJ Liddle MW Machan SJ Magoffin CD Nash OE Robinson LWP Wells LJ Wright MH Yardy SAA Zaidi Assuming that things are still not desperate enough for Liddle to be called in, then the attack will be Magoffin, Robinson and Hobden plus spinners. Yardy will be buoyed up by a hundred fro the Seconds last week , as will Cachopa whose T20 form has outstripped his championship play this year. They will contest one place in the batting order, and lower down it will be Burgoyne (27 second XI championship wickets for Sussex this year at 21.59) versus Zaidi. The bowling is probably a bit thin, but that's all we've got. Very little rain here in Mid Sussex about 15 miles to the east and that has stopped now, so it looks as if there will be a full day's play and it should brighten up this afternoon. Groundsman James Askew got a commendation from the ECB for a second XI wicket he prepared there earlier this year and we all know how good the pitch was last year. Meanwhile Somerset have taken 2 points from their first innings against Warwickshire at Birmingham and are therefore 15 points ahead of Notts, 16 points clear of Sussex. It is small things like this that we will have to watch as closely as the final result from now on., and every bonus point is vital. However tempting the alternatives we must bat first if we win the toss , and get maximum batting points.

Any chance of getting Wessels and Taylor out anytime soon?
Good first hour shame about the lack of progress since. Batting looking very easy now. Time for Magoffin and Robinson! We really need Hobden and Wells to step up to the plate as Magoffin and Robinson cannot do it all on their own. 163-3 time out taken by Sussex. Not a bad move considering there looks more chance of being struck by lightening on a clear day then there is of Sussex actually taking a wicket. Robinson has a handy knack of taking wickets when you least expect it. Hobden is proof that being able to bowl fast isn't enough to be a seamer you need to take wickets as well. So much for Greenfield's policy of picking seamers for the Academy based on how fast they can bowl as opposed to whether or not they can actually take wickets. When does Magoffin get his British passport? The need for an overseas spinner is clear. Hopefully Jordan will be back for our next Championship game.
