This is what frustrates me about selection, If you pick a player in the squad you obviously see a potential England player. How are you going to know they can step up if you don’t give them a go?
It happened with Matt Parkinson, spent the whole winter warming the bench.
Garton picked for the Pakistani ODI’s too so not only carrying drinks but missing playing for Sussex when we really are down to the bare bones.

Garton was picked to see how he fits in "with the boys in the dressing-room" and if his personality fits with the "Morgan team culture". This was never about playing cricket, but carrying the drinks tray and hand sanitiser. Phil Salt was the same. If you first pass the "correct personality test" and sounding from Morgan, George has gained a healthy tick, then it's all eyes on how you progress in county cricket. Rather like football, England are blessed with a lot of talent sitting on the bench, at present, which means you can be far more choosy. One of the reasons why Morgan has to go. He's past his sell by date. He's lost all sense of the real world and is wrapped up in his own self centred bubble.

Unfortunately, Morgan is also a highly successful Captain and carries a great deal of power and say. Anyone who Captains over an ODI World Cup winning team, for example, can do whatever he likes and can even choose his own retirement date.

Good morning. Don't see that much on here.
I can only assume that England think by dangling a player in but not playing him, they will make him more determined by the time he does get a chance. I can see the logic in that to a certain extent but I can't get away from the view that this was the perfect game for not only Garton but Banton too.
Shame. Hopefully when he does get a gig or by the time he plays next for whoever he isn't hopelessly out of rhythm.

I'm on Morgan's side here. He's looking for youngsters that will fit into England's ethos and strategy, and he needs to assess personality/compatibility before committing to an individual. He doesn't want a good player to turn out to be the grit in the oyster in the dressing room. Think Alex Hales. By bringing Garton into the squad, he's showing him that he has the potential, and giving him the feel of the dressing room. Garton should feel encouraged by this.

Unless England bomb at the next tournament in which case he will be sacked as captain.

So if you look at it from a players point of view he has to want to be with England rather than Sussex as it's the highest level possible and he must aspire to this so we cannot complain and just wish this highly talented young man all the best of luck! Takes a while to settle in to methods and setups so understand the bedding in period, both sides have to know it's right before he plays...

Why would that stop you picking someone to play? Why not test that compatibility while doing the thing you're there for? It's over complicating something Flash and it's also too clicky. If I wanted you to come and work on my emu farm cos you were the best damn emu farmer on this side of the Atlantic, would I decide not to hire you once I found out you aren't into dogging or something else I'm into? No, I'd want you because you were the best damn emu farmer on this side of the Atlantic. Hopefully he'll get his chance against Pakistan, if he hasn't rubbed some senior player up the wrong way. Christ, getting marked on your behaviour too in this cult. Always remember to kneel before the leader George.

He's not going to be able to play against Pakistan either after a Covid outbreak in the ODI squad - www.ecb.co.uk/news/2184616What an absolute mess, he must be gutted.

It could work in his favour if he’s selected for the the IT20’s which come after the ODI’s as I would say that’s more his strength.

Is Garton being lined up to be the next Sussex captain (possibly with Haines as vice-captain?) If so both should be given their county cap this week. “Garts is at the age where he’s just coming into his prime and he’s showing real leadership in our dressing room. He’s a pleasure to work with as a coach and is a great example for our young players coming through.” sussexcricket.co.uk/news/george-garton-signs-contract-extension-0
