Not sure I can ever remember a county side that relied so heavily on one player to score all the runs.
You probably have to go all the way back to Boycott circa 1971 when he averaged 105 and no other Yorkshire batsman had an average of above 35.
Well done Ed Joyce. But cricket is supposed to be a team game. Sussex are not in a good place right now with the match-fixing scandal, injuries, players out of form and results going against us. That's when you need a couple of big characters to stand up and be counted. The skipper apart, I don't see them.

Yet again, well done Joyce for finding the patience to go with his skill. Meanwhile, a great start from Magoffin - good to see that his reverses against Notts don't seem to have thrown him off his usual metronomic accuracy and awkwardness.

39-5. I'd forgotten how much Magoffin likes Somerset's batsmen when it's nice and humid. Last time Horsham, this time Taunton - anywhere but Hove it seems

Mags loves his scrumpy. Now 17-5.
Compare Wright's expensive two overs to Magoffin's and the gulf in standard is all to be seen. That is the problem with Sussex. They have a small group of players whom when on form together make Sussex an accomplished Division 1 side. When they don't fire, the majority of others are unable to remain competitive.
At present, the tale of Somerset woe and Sussex bossing the game is down to just two players.
I would suggest the difference with the top division 1 sides is that they have more classy and consistent players. This really showed up when Sussex played Notts at Hove.
As an aside, wasn't it Somerset who tried hard to woo Magoffin back in late 2012 when his Sussex contract came up for renewal?
Now Mags is taken out of the attack, Somerset are making hay. Jimmy showing the worst of his inconsistency.
edit: Come on Will!

Will showing nerves. Keiswetter making much hay. Two overs 20 runs. Wright two overs 20 runs. Mags 10 overs 19 runs. Says it all. Now Jordan has gone, you wonder how Sussex can remain competitive in division 1 if Joyce and Magoffin lose form. And why it is so important that the senior players like Nash, Wright et al step up to the plate and show far more consistency.

It is interesting when you break the Sussex side down against Somerset.
Top Players
Joyce, Wright, Magoffin, Nash
Second Tier
Wells, Brown, RHB, Machan, Anyon
Blooding
Beer, Piolet
To Return From Injury
Yardy, Lewis
Of the top players only Joyce and Magoffin are showing consistent form. Nash and Wright are not. Yardy is also in this group but his inconsistency seems to worsen.
From the second tier, all offer inconsistency. How do you turn this around? Surely, it must come down to the coaches and implanting the desire to fight for your place every game. There are certain senior players where that desire to fight may have gone, knowing that the inconsistency of the second tier players allows you, ironically, a consistent place.

wow - I get to listen to the commentary and wickets fall. Sounds like Mags was supreme this morning. The Somerset commentators are a little one sided. When Trego was out I thought he was going to cry.
But as others have said, a two man team at the moment.

Oh dear, Joyce drops a straight-forward catch and after being 39-5 one senses the momentum now firmly with Somerset. It's what makes championship cricket so intriguing.

We do this too many times. What looked like a lead of 50+ is turning into a deficit of who knows how many. We do seem to a very generous county, Overton has his highest first class score. From the commentary it sounds like Overton is being treated like a top order batsman with fielders scattered far and far, his average is just over 15!
Is it because there is not enough back up to Magoffin?

Yep, if Jordan had been playing we might have bowled Somerset out for under 100. But when injuries strike or England beckons, Sussex don't have the depth of squad.
For me, the weaknesses of the Sussex side are being highlighted more and more. It must be a nightmare for Robinson when Jordan departs, Yardy and Lewis are injured, and last season's big gamble, Zaidi, is not performing yet. Who does that leave you with?
Once more Robinson's distrust of Beer comes through. He bowls 6 overs for 44 runs and never reappears, being replaced by two part-time spinners in Nash and Wells.
What must this do to Will's confidence, when your own coach shows so little faith in your ability? He suffered early nerves. That was it.
Magoffin did brilliantly to bowl so many overs for an 'old man' with a dodgy knee and should have had 7 wickets by now. But without Jordan, the seam attack which was primarily responsible for our third place last summer, is looking weak when Mags support, Anyon, has one of his "off days". And where the potency of Wright has long gone.

Not sure. He pulled something in his back earlier.
Meanwhile, Rik Mayall is dead. That's a shock. He was only 56. Sussex need his comedic attitude right now.

I would have thought it was Joyce who makes the bowling decisions on the pitch.
This is embarrassing - or maybe it isn't and just shows what we should expect. No it is embarrassing. Overton's previous high was 50 and average 15. If your not going to take wickets then don't give runs away. Now Thomas is starting to score quickly.
I miss TC - he would have to buy a bigger sofa and an extra cat if he wanted to listen to this.
