Even I wouldn't quite go that far. I wouldn't play Finch just yet and I wouldn't play Hatchett and Hobden in the same team, just yet. Hobden had a nice little go last week, done well, bit expensive but he's gonna be good - maybe even Kirtley/Lewry good. Hatchett deserves his chance, has all season, as does Beer - has done for years.

I believe Lewis is injured with an achilles problem, so bowling attack may well be Anyon, Magoffin, Beer and Hobden

Beer's in, at last. You'd think I'd be happy but I'm gonna go on record and say that once again we've got selection wrong. It had to be another proper bowler but we've gone with an all-rounder, Piolet. An attack of Anyon, Mags, Piolet first change, Wright and our young leggie, at Taunton against Tres & Co - Christ, bat first if you can Joyce. It's a negative move and there's no denying that, however biased you are. Chuffed for Beer though. If we can bat first and bat well we might actually find out about the lad.

Doesn't look too frightening that attack We have to hope that Jimmy has one of his, increasingly rare, influential days. I wonder how much Piolet's selection owes to concerns about the batting. At least him and Beer do shorten the tail

The increasing injury list is a nightmare for Robinson with Jordan firmly in the England camp. Delighted for Beer. Time to give Hobden or Hatchett a lengthy go?

At least him and Beer do shorten the tail It owes almost completely to concerns over the batting, and that's why it's a negative move. We need another strike bowler in there. Finch is next in line LM, I spose, but he'll need to knock on the door. In fairness, the seconds schedule doesn't suit trying to break into the firsts quite early - they've hardly played any three day cricket.

Rhetorical or not, I'll answer it; About as bad as H-B has done. There's a seconds match on I think, so Finch could do himself the world of good in the next few days. Hobden and Hatchett too.

Just to inject a sense of perspective, if we remember how imposing the Notts batting was in the Hove match they are currently 49-4 at Headingley. Yorkshire are next up, I know, but 'tis all relative this season.

Even if we wanted to leave out a couple of the struggling batsmen, we only have young Finch who could come in. We just have to struggle on I suppose

At the start of the season, with Prior back and Wright unexpectedly free of T20 commitments it looked like an embarrassment of riches, but inconsistency has been the problem this year, as it was last year. Nobody doubts that Wells, Machan and Brown have talent and good techniques, but all too often they forget the basics and are tempted into wretched and regrettable shots or misses. It puts me in mind of a conversation I was having at the last match: who is the batting coach for Sussex?

Isn't that the difference between a solo game for the amateur and a professional team game, that the coach is the one to pick up on the faults and help to correct them?

Looks like a big blob of rain on the way to Taunton so maybe not too much more cricket today. Looks like batting is a bit of a struggle or the bowling very tight, Luke 7 off 38 is a rarity. Interesting stuff above, enough thoughts and comments to fit into several threads.
Another inconsistent batting performance, we are relying on Joyce too much, are there any more Ireland games or anything else that might interrupt his season? Is it his knees that are dodgy?

And what did KG achieve as a batsman? To be fair, some good coaches never really achieved much as players. I wonder if, the senior players at least, are too set in their ways to change. Looking at our batters, most are dashers who are capable of scoring very quick, or getting out cheaply. I've seen us post 400+ In no time at all, enabling us to win matches when seemingly too much time has been lost to the weather. Having said all that, Luke seems to have found the patience to grit out an innings, and has often gone on to make big hundreds. Personally, I think the first thing we should try, is to move Luke up to bat at number three.
