Could not agree less, hh. He has been around the Sussex set-up for c.14 years. He knows what is required. He does not produce it in 2nd XI cricket. I admit he has some limited success in the abbreviated form of the game. I just fear he does not have what it takes to make it in the game, more's the pity. It is the same with Max Waller at Taunton and Michael Munday before him. I know from your postings you have seen numerous Second XI games, and I'm sure you speak knowledgably. My post was motivated by the knowledge that his first inning display had been costly, that he might have to play more if our injuries continue and we lack a spinner, and that in a game we are destined to lose it makes no sense to put on a bowler whose style means that he is likely to be charged. By so doing, Joyce has effectively told him that he regards him as cannon fodder and irrelevant to the game. Whether or not he has what it takes, treatment like that is going to make it much harder for him to make a breakthrough that could be in Sussex' interest. I'm afraid I think that's just poor captaincy.

Well that was pants, so much for my optomism. Beer did more than most, just not with the ball but how can a spinner bowl to two paltry useless scores like that. He was on a hiding to nothing and shouldn't be judged on it, although already is being and probably by the management too. BM's often dismissive of him but he has nothing on Howard's view - which is a view, so fair enough, and may well be right too but his judgement comes under scrutiny when he adds statements about not doing much for the seconds, which is blatantly not true, unless his job isn't to take wickets year after year.
Anyway, we are free-falling. We have issues and we need to get it together. We're a good enough squad but 'summin ain't right' as the Stereo MCs once sang. They were s**t by the way, bit like our frazzled minds.

A massive improvement needed from all with the exception of Joyce and Magoffin.
To Howard H would you be quite as dismissive if that were Whittingham?

They took nine years to record the follow-up to their chart-topping album Connected. Does that mean we will have to wait until 2018 for Sussex to win their next trophy?

And the age difference is, Coverpoint? Really beggars belief! Have I screamed about Sakande's showing for Oxford UCCE v Middlesex? No. Please credit me with some intelligence and not with bias. My view is an honest one experienced from 3 feet away on occasions in the past.

I must admit I drift in and out of here, to the extent that it took me a while to notice the change of locale, but I try and keep up to date with goings on. I was amazed to read via Stephen Hollis that Robbo was at an ECB meeting today... not even on Day 4 of a match when a result or stalemate might already be determined, not on a non-match day which I thought the rejigged season was meant to create. No sour grapes, as I assume other coaches were "invited", but this does seem very peculiar, and cant help with a team in need of some stability.

hmmm, I tune in when I get up over here and I always miss the morning session and most of the action. I was hoping for more resolve but was not expecting it, unfortunately my expectations were more accurate. Not only are we losing games but we are losing them badly and not picking up (m)any bonus points. Could be costly at the end of the season. When you get on a roll it can be very hard to stop rolling (especially when it is downhill). HH, nice Goatmouth on Brown. Bless my sole, another two gone whilst writing this post. Has the pitch degenerated since Overton (previous high score of 50) scored 86? I hate that the match fixing scandal is being used as an excuse. No excuses. The match fixing is not being used as an excuse.

Mark Robinson at an ECB Head Coaches Meeting today is a little bizarre when a fair number - 12 in total - are in the middle of important Championship matches. Couldn't the ECB choose a more appropriate day?

To be fair to Robinson, that is at least the third day's play he hasn't attended this season - (v Warwicks at Edgbaston when he was attending an interview for another job and v Middx at Lord's when I think he chose to go to Wembley for the FA Cup final?) We won both of those matches without him, so we can't really blame today's shambles on his absence !!!

We need to focus our attention on trying to stay in the top division Any thoughts of a top half finish are just pie in the sky, there are not many sides worse than us at the moment. We need to beg, steal or borrow a couple of players. If it's Tredwell and a Kolpak, so be it, just do what it takes and address the problems in the winter.

Time for Finch to be given a chance in place of the injured Wells.

Just back from the trip to Taunton. It looks as if nearly everything has already been said on this thread. However, despite the result, we had a very entertaining 3 days' cricket - the pitches at Taunton are much more interesting than they used to be. Maybe Somerset realised they'd never win the Championship, when both sides score 400 plus in the 1st innings! The highlight was, of course, Thomas's 4 in 4. I never thought I'd see one of those - it was a real "I was there" moment. stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/283446.htmlwww.youtube.com/watch?v=jYeDmpm61yE

It certainly didn't sound like the Taunton pitches we've all grown acciustomed to recently, and we knew from watching him at Hove that Thomas just seems to be getting wilier and more skilful as he grows older. Any other observations, perhaps on Overton and Dockrell as prospects?

Or how did their prospects Overton and Dockrell compare to our two, Piolet and Beer?
