Ed Joyce shares part of the responsibility. Last time Sussex won a game under his captaincy was that dramatic one wkt victory v warwicks way back in May.

Am I mistaken in thinking our batting has only been sporadically good at best over the last few seasons not just recently?
We have been searching for the right combination and have had good spells from several players but not really had a few players consistently playing to a good level over a period of time.
I hate to pick out certain players as I am not in any way doubting their commitment but we have all seen flashes that made us believe better was coming before it transpired to be a short burst of form rather than a longer good level.
I also don't actually doubt that the batsmen we have had are good enough but something is preventing consistent performances over more than a couple of matches.
The calendar is a fiasco and in no way allows players to build confidence in one form of the game before having to change their mindset to a different format.
I am also not making excuses for some pretty bad performances overall but I could see this type of season coming and actually was mildly surprised that it wasn't before this year.
I sincerely hope we are able to survive as it would be a horrific end to Michael Yardy's career should it end in relegation.
Let's get behind the team and trust that the abilities they undoubtedly have will pull us through and we can regroup and aim higher next season.

Early tea. Off for a passing/passed shower. 142-5. One decent partnership might win this. Bright sunshine now. Fabulous fighting knock thus far from Chris Nash. To make 266 in a last innings you need an 80, a 50 and a forty and bits. Thus far we have had a 16, a 22, a 5, an 11 and a 20...

Chris Nash caught at 2nd slip for 66 to a ball that was wide and he was trying to uppercut for 4. 42 overs left real guts needed.

Off for bad light now, can't be easy for the batsmen to get in any rhythm.

Having played very well, especially two step 4 of Rayner, Zaidi nicks off. Now 197-7. 32 overs remain. Light cloud. Golden underpants time!

Olli hits 2 nice 4, gets a brute from R - Jones. 207-8. Don't give up. Big shout against Mags first ball. Ben flashes very hard. Rayner drops a lightning chance. Squeaky bottom time. Wide ... first bowlers extra from the 340th delivery! Help!

Mags caught at deep square brilliantly by Milan (short Tavern boundary). Lids cover drives first ball for 4. Now a 4 to Ben Brown. Keep the faith!

Ben hits a long - hop off Murtagh to deep square. Could have hit it out of the ground. Throws bat 20 yards towards cover. Great effort from him and Nash. We SHOULD have won this one.... oh dear.... just 20 runs ...

Taken in isolation, a great game and an honourable defeat. Unfortunately the table doesn't allow us to take it in isolation. We have not developed enough form with the bat to deal with the challenge and that's what's cost us the match. Must pay respect to Malan and his near-nine hours at the crease.

Well played Sussex and especially Ben brown, who at least made a game of it . Seven defeats in the last ten lvcc games makes relegation pretty much inevitable. But four days of Kent v Sussex at Tunbridge Wells next season is my perfect match at my perfect venue so silver lining and all that...
