After weeks of rubbish, broken only by a surprisingly resilient performance from a weakened squad against Middlesex, here we are: last quarter of the season, two home games, two away. Relegation is not yet an absolute certainty, and might not be even if this game is lost. Indeed, the points for a draw are not that much more important than getting a good hand of bonus points, so there is everything to fight for, even against the outstanding side in the championship this year. Negative tactics, theories about putting the other side in first, defensive field placings: none of these should apply.
There is nothing to be learnt from the colossal waste of time and money that is the scheduled 50 over game against Essex today, even if the promised rain relents. All we can hope for is that the senior players selected don't strain themselves if they do get on the field, or overtrain. For the Yorkshire game the team should be:-
Joyce Wells Machan Nash Wright XYZ Brown Jordan Robinson Magoffin Hobden
XYZ is the sum of the options. X is Cachopa, if he could recapture the form he showed last summer and in the New Zealand season last winter. In 17 List A and T20 matches last winter he scored 630 runs at an average of 45.00 with a century and four 50s. Where has it all gone? That kind of punchy, attacking play is what we really need in the middle order, particularly when they bring Rashid on to try and awe people with his reputation and his fairly innocuous leg breaks that become so juicily hittable when he gets rattled and tries to bowl faster.
Y is Yardy, one last flourish from the old campaigner whose awkward style and pugnacity were both so usefully displayed at Lord's. Playing him now is generally a defensive option, though.
Z is Zaidi, probably in the last few weeks of his contract here and unfulfilled, although having enjoyed an unlikely end to his first class career having stepped down to play club cricket in Lancashire. At his fallible best, his wristy batting might come off and he has worked hard on his fitness to conquer the effects of advancing years and widening tum in the field. His bowling represents the only controlled spin that Robinson is likely to play.
Unless....one last throw of the dice and a return from the wilderness for Beer, perhaps? We shall see.

Middlesex's win in the last fixture was unfortunate on several levels. It notionally keeps Middlesex mathematically in the hunt for the title thereby ensuring that Yorkshire take this game very seriously. Sadly I fear the return at Headingley is also likely to be taken seriously as Yorkshire look to complete an unbeaten season.

Joyce Wells Machan Nash Yardy Wright Brown Jordan Robinson Magoffin Hobden So the defensive option then. Why do you think that?

I don't think we will have any greater chance of winning by playing Zaidi who is not more than a containing bowler. Cachopa's championship form has been abysmal. Our best chance of winning is winning the toss, putting a score on the board and letting the four seamers and Luke Wells, the best spin bowling option we have at the club if we are going to continue with our policy of ignoring Will Beer, as the sole spinner.

Call me pessimistic but it's about how many batting and bowling points Sussex can accrue. On present form Yorkshire should walk this match as they will the one at home. It is the Somerset and Worcestershire game's that Sussex must win if we are to remain in Division 1.
Even so, the last two seasons have seen Sussex rally at the last hurdles and Robinson's miracle factory come into play. Imho, it is down to Joyce. The captain must lead his team by example when things are tough as did Luke in the T20. God knows what has happened to him this season after such a fantastic 2014. Ed appears jaded and seemingly has fallen out of love with cricket. Whether the injuries and huge disappointments over Shahzad and Mills affected him, we may never know, but if a captain was ever to yank himself up by the boot straps and save his team from relegation, now is the time.
Captain Marvel, we need you!

Captain Marvel, we need you! Taking the attack to the opposition has been where we have been most miserable this season, before and after the run of injuries to bowlers. Between the game against Worcester and the Birmingham bore draw only twice did we pass 100 by the time the 3rd wicket fell, and we have consistently failed to get the batting points we need. Machan, Wright and Brown are the only ones to have been there or thereabouts consistently, and for a time only two of them. Nash has come late to his form, Wells flared and fizzled away like a Fifth of November reject, and Yardy and Joyce have performed dourly and without conviction. Goodness knows what has happened to Cachopa, unless there are pavilion dramas to which we are not privy. Yorkshire have a good, professional attack and nothing more. Patterson, Bresnan, Sidebottom and Brooks are not supermen or Test stars unjustly overlooked. Whatever the standard of wicket that is prepared we should be aggressive in outlook, determined to get maximum batting points, and every player must work to that end. Playing to survive will inevitably lead to failure and the bowlers will have an unfair burden to carry.

I shall be there tomorrow.
If we can survive the first 2 days, the weather forecast says we'll get a draw!

Yorkshire have picked a very strong 13 man squad. In fact I am not sure who will be left out but the squad is: Gale, Lees, Ballance, Hodd, Leaning, Maxwell, Rhodes, Rashid, Plunkett, Bresnan, Sidebottom, Patterson, Brooks.I imagine Rhodes and a bowler will be left out but it might be Gale.

I know, frightening isn't it. The cautious part of me says, we can't bowl that line up out so let's just try and go for a weather assisted draw. You could add any number of the available bowlers to the top trio of Magoffin, Jordan and Robbo, and it wouldn't make the slightest difference. Better going for six batters and selecting Zaidi for his defensive bowling, and his batting ability. with that in mind, my line up would be, joyce Wells Machan Nash Wright Yardy Brown Zaidi Jordan Robinson Magoffin

Too defensive JB and CP, I hope Sussex can build up a better attitude than you can. What makes you think that the tried, tested and failed three and a half man attack can turn around its fortunes and somehow scrape a draw, if it pisses down? That team is one reason why we're in this mess. Likelihood is that these two games against Yorks will have no say in our fate, it's about Worcs and Zum really. We need to attack Yorks and play with freedomm, we have nothing to lose in these particular fixtures. Presuming that Beer's about as close to being picked as Zaidi is a non overseas player, this is the team we need:
Wells Joyce Machan Nash Wright Brown Zaidi Jordan Robinson Mags Hobden/Hatchett

Yes, do you go for Yardy's lack of runs or Hobden's lack of wickets?
