With my usual instinct for gauging the weather wrongly I missed what must have been a fascinating, and at the end rather improbable day yesterday. Today I am poised to go, in the company of friends: what could possibly go wrong?

Hhs, Yes, timing is never easy! Be careful as Hove got a battering last night from both wind and rain. It felt and sounded like February rather than September. The rain has stopped for now but let us hope the Hove drainage has again worked well. Yesterday was a fascinating day. Repeat programmes from last season were triggered with the rise of Zaidi who seems to find his form at the end of seasons. His performance was assured and confident and looked like a regular 1st team player. Yardy seems determined to end his cricket career with a November 5th bang, whilst Joyce was his old self from last season, all set for a classic 100 but got out to one of those leg side feather shots that causes groans from supporters heard in Bexhill. No idea what play will be gained today but bring a book. edit: Sussex twitter says there will be a pitch inspection at 11am. BBC weather says fine for rest of day but their forecasts are about as predictable as a camel on heat! www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeC5u8ot6Usedit: Next inspection at 11.30am. edit: Play begins at 12 noon - Hooray!

100 for Yardy. Well done, Sir. Batting points seem so much easier to get suddenly.

Interesting dilemma. Declare at 400 and deprive Soms of a bowling point or bat on and grind them down?

Two questions. Do Sussex centurions statistically succumb more often between 100 and 105 than batsmen of any other county and is Chris Jordan the best slipper in the country?

The good news is Sussex gained full batting points. The bad news is Hampshire is matching us point by point against Hampshire.

Unfortunately arrived at Hove minutes after Yardy's exit. When I arrived at Brighton he was still in his 60s, I was following ball by ball on cricinfo as I got the train to Hove. As I turned into Wilbury Rd, Yardy reached his century. A couple of minutes later, he was out and left the pitch to a tremendous round of applause Had I not been focused on the cricinfo score, and walked a bit faster, I might have made it in time. To be fair, nobody expected him to go to three figures at such a rate of knots

To be fair, nobody expected him to go to three figures at such a rate of knots It helped that Somerset bowled poorly and were captained by an automaton from the same school as Joyce/Robinson. At no stage were they prepared to try their spinner and the field placings were unimaginative and straight out of the "this is how they do things in the Tests so it must be alright" book. Great that Yardy made such an important and valuable innings, and Jordan backed him up really well and then did his best with only Magoffin and Hatchett to follow to capitalise on this. A shame that when Sussex bowled the same lack of imagination was apparent, and though Jordan bowled a few good balls, looking, as so often, as if he could have done with 20 overs match practice in the last week, and Magoffin one excellent over; thereafter there was nothing more than Lewis Hatchett showing us what a first-rate club bowler he can be, and the ritual over of Zaidi bowling low-trajectory darts immediately before tea. As it stands, Sussex need to get some bowling points to preserve a buffer over Somerset against the unlikely event of Hampshire both beating Yorkshire and Notts. Finishing a few points clear of relegation would probably be a just end to a season when we started well, albeit covering over the cracks, and ended quite well, with other cracks barely covered. Dealing with the cracks is a masonry project for the winter.

I'm in Provence for a couple of weeks and looking forward to the David Gilmour concert in Orange on Thursday. By then I trust we will have dispatched the ciderphiles.

Fb,
Oops! Too much wine.
Actually Hampshire are one point ahead of us. Are Yorkshire's wheels coming off now they've won the Championship?

My betting is that next week they will be allowed to use Root, Bairstow, etc as part of the final game celebration.

Bairstow, Rashid and Plunkett all likely to return and I would have thought England would want Joe Root to have a game before touring. Not a happy prospect for Sussex.
