Disagree.
Sussex offered a battling performance today. Aggression not passivity. Sussex can't do passivity. A superb innings from Yardy which beggars the question: Where has Yards been for the last 4 months? An excellent tail-end rally against the best seam attack in the land, agonisingly missing out on two batting points by just two runs as Hatchett went for glory and was caught.
My understanding is... if Hampshire beat Notts and Yorkshire beat Sussex, we are relegated, and judging by Hampshire's fightback this afternoon, Graham Taylor might say, "Do I not like that. Do I not like that at all!"

I would rather Sussex stay up by playing boring cricket than going down playing exciting cricket. At the end of the day it's the end result that counts not how you got play.

Did you post that through a poorly working phone CP? You've shot Machan twice now, that's no way to treat our best batter of the season. I'd like to shoot every poet that has ever existed myself, but that's another story.
As usual, I agree with me old mucka S&F - what a lovely post. We can't play for draws on a seamer's track at Headingly against the best team in Yorkshire, or even England. Up and atom, as the Pope would say.

Peter Gabriel used to sing that you've got to get in to get out. Unfortunately, some of our batsmen don't conform to that idiom but many do. Unless we import quality batsmen such as Joyce, we seem totally dependent on their ability to develop nous themselves. I share CP's frustration. I am pleased for Hatchett and the justifiably maligned Liddle. The fact remains that we should not be in this plight. Beer should have 500 runs and 35 wickets by now. We are prepared to be brave and open the batting with Jordan, but not play one of our most talented bowlers all season.

Playing with aggression on a seaming wicket rather than putting your head down and batting properly, like playing only five batsmen when all you need is a draw, is doomed to end up with Sussex relegated. Machan has scored nothing in the last three and a half games. It's about time he pulled his finger out and scored some runs!

The reality is that with few exceptions the players and coaching staff collectively are not pulling their weight. Top of our winter recruitment list should be a new coach and captain.

Unless it pissed down for two of four days this was never gonna be a draw, however many batters you played. Hard to speculate on what may have been but I can say with confidence that I wouldn't be confident of us being in a better position now if we'd gone with your batsman heavy negative boring side CP. At what part of the season has that worked for you? We've gone toe to toe with the Champs and we're still in it - I've almost forgiven Joyce as at last he's given the right team-talk.

To be quite honest it needs to rain for the next two days or Sussex are doomed to be relegated.

To be quite honest it needs to rain for the next two days or Sussex are doomed to be relegated. Given the weather forecasts, our best hope lies in Notts getting a decent score and Hants wilting under the pressure. Nervy day wearing out the F5 key, I suspect.

On reflection I think that the positive approach adopted by Sussex yesterday was the correct one. It was not reckless. They were not playing in 20/20 mode but attacked at every opportunity. Yorkshire were clearly rattled. I have seen many teams come to Headingley and scratch around until they inevitably get out. This Yorkshire attack will always bowl teams out so you must score when you can. There were 5 international bowlers all trying their best to dismiss you.
Incidentally Michael Yardy was applauded to the wicket by all the Yorkshire team and many in the crowd rose to clap as well. There was no public address announcement saying it was his last match, people just knew. Sometimes it is refreshing to be amongst cricket folk.
It rained in the night and looks like there may be some showers around in the morning but nothing too serious. A fascinating few hours ahead.

Thanks , leedsgull, for a welcome dose of thoughtfulness as well as local knowledge. It can get very emotional, following the match from afar, and the scoring rate seemed so extraordinary in the circumstances that I wondered what tactics were being used. I think we've gone so long with the idea of safety first being the default position for Robinson and Joyce that when they do take up the offensive we simply don't recognise it for what it is and assume they've gone mad. From that perspective the promotion of Jordan to opener - as someone posted, one of the Adams brainwaves during his Surrey days - fits with this attempt to take the battle to the enemy. It didn't come off, and Machan gave his wicket away, but in the end we got to match the Yorkshire score as near as damnit, and with one wicket down and some tight bowling yesterday evening we are very much in the game. The weather should make it even more interesting. As to what we ought to have done for safety against Hampshire playing out of their skins....the answer is we aren't playing against Hampshire, we're playing Yorkshire and you cannot conduct a cricket match by wondering about how another match will go. The aim of this side from the initial selection onwards has been to win the game against Yorkshire, and I applaud that. I wish we had been similarly forthright on half a dozen occasions earlier in the year.

Stonewall, fine comments re Beer, I agree except 500 runs?
The season rests on this game, however Sussex were put in this position months ago. Dockerell, Burgoyne, what was the point? Play your own, have faith, create faith. By not doing so you undermine the rest of squad, (if we have a squad, and not 3 teams and a 2nd team?) F H-P, 1 game and discarded. Why? Wells 'top spinner' and lauded by Joyce. Should the focus have been on him scoring runs at the top of the order? Yes. Thomas? What was that all about? Swansong for an old man? Linley? 5 or 6 choice at Surrey, straight in at Sussex? Was he that good?
I have some sympathy with the injuries. They have had an effect on the team but we have had no inclination to have a plan B or C. This is a lack of management/captaincy vision. Here is where the inquest by the committee and CEO must focus. Is the present structure right for Sussex cricket? Are the present management the right management for Sussex cricket? This is a business and the past few years performances have not been good enough from the management. A proper commercial business might have replaced some of them by now.
From my perspective, the management should be held to account. They signed the players, they and the captains pick the teams. Not enough has been done to make things competitive.
A new team or some positive external appointments and a new captain. Someone to breathe life into the club, some purpose, some positive body language at the very least.
Today and tomorrow I wish them all well and hope things go for them.
After the game, please someone, Zac or Jim take control. Changes are needed.

Interesting to see what the opposition's messageboard had to say about play yesterday. This from "hawke" on the Corridor of Uncertainty:
" I went after tea yesterday and saw Yorkshire commencing their second innings. Lees was out first ball very tamely, chipping one back to Jordan. The bowler appeared surprised. A match report suggested Lees had played early. Daft dismissal.
Magoffin bowled really well and beat the bat of both Lyth and Ballance on a number of occasions with lift off a a good length. Ballance edged one and happily it found its way to the boundary. I later heard Cally say two Sussex slip fieldsmen had left it for each other. Phew!! Actually the Sussex fielding may be a weakness. One or two of them may be dining too well on Martlet Pies.
Luckily no other Sussex bowler was at Magoffin's level including a Pakistani slow left armer who is now their overseas player Ashar Zaidi. He seems an odd choice and it looks like he has quickly taken to in Martlet Pies.. I could have asked Mark Robinson about this signing and his dining as he sat a couple of rows in front of me in the Trueman enclosure chatting for some tome to some Sussex diehards. Robinson still has a lean and hungry look. I expect Magoffin, who is equally lean and hungry, has a Scotch granny.
Ballance, who seems to have lost some 'puppy fat', hit some intended fours between his defending but Lyth was content just to dig in.
The lights were on throughout and helped play be extended until it became too gloomy and off they went. My friend says lights - and they were not fully on just half beam it seemed - can supplement natural light but not take over. He thinks that if the lights cast shadows then its time to go off.... The match very interestingly poised."

A BIG morning today. Already, Somerset are safe. Can the Sussex bowlers take a slew of wickets before lunch and can Hampshire reach parity with Notts or beyond. To use the cliche, both matches will go down to the wire and come 5pm Friday both sets of supporters may be on horse tranquillisers where all those near-missed points over the season come back to haunt you.
