It does suggest, though, that Will Beer won't be playing and red ball cricket next season, and is not regarded as good enough even in Div Two against the fragile batting line-ups of Leics/Kent/Derbys etc. Will needs to step up his four day game, if he wants to challenge for a championship place. Looking forward to seeing Beer and Briggs bowling in tandem in the one day stuff I agree with Jonboy it's surely up to Will to step up his performances in the four day game by taking a sackful of wickets for the seconds. Beer and Briggs should be a good combination in the one-day staff and Briggs will probably prefer the bouncier pitches at Hove. I am surprised Hampshire have agreed to release him but then they do still have leg spinner Mason Crane, slow left armer Liam Dawson and off-spinner Brad Taylor. What about an overseas opener? With Yardy gone and Joyce not likely to be too few behind him who are the openers on the staff apart from Wells? Overseas opener Joyce Machan Nash Wright (c) Brown (+) Jordan Shahzad Robinson Magoffin Briggs

Wow! I was hoping for this signing and said so on other threads, I couldn't believe it would come true. I promise I've not got any insider knowledge! It just seems to make so much sense, we need a quality spinner, Hants seem to have lost faith in him, he lives fairly locally and he'll get more help from the Hove wicket than he would from those at the Rose Bowl.
S&F, I think Dave Allen won't be too disappointed, he watches Sussex a lot as well.
This appears to be a marriage made in heaven. Now I've said that he'll 'buy' about half a dozen wickets all season, have a fracas with a nightclub bouncer and be out on his ear by August!
Now, a promising young overseas opening bat please.

I think the fact that we have already tried for two seamers, albeit domestically qualified, suggests that we are clearly after another quick. If Robbo was correct, and it's only two in, my bet would be on another seamer, preferably an all rounder. If by chance, we can bring in three new players, then yes, a top order batter would definitely be next in line Either way, it's a great start to the recruitment

Are you suggesting Sussex need to provide brollies to all the bouncers at Brighton's night clubs?

You're obviously all one-day cricket fans and in that, in tandem with Beer, we have a good signing. I don't share the optimism in the longer form though but he's ideal for Mark Robinson as he's a defensive bowler, risk free, tie up an end. He's a much less risky pick than Beer, although he can't bat, so he fits our attitude to cricket perfectly while the management's the same. This is a guy who hasn't been able to hold down a place in the Hants side for two or three years, also in div 2, which is why they don't mind too much letting him go.
JB, we clearly need a batter not a seamer, that's so very very clear to all but maybe you and Mark Robinson, who as we all know is no longer capable and is getting more and more stubborn, and insane, by the season.
Beer should leave if he's out of contract but if he doesn't we should start April as usual, with four seamers - yet with the sense to change the balance by May/June this time, while those two bowl frequently for the seconds to see who is the best. Beer will win hands down, and score more runs, but I doubt that will count for anything. In fact I just doubt it will happen.
Despite the vast majority of this post, a pretty good signing - young, English (near as dammit) and a very good one-day bowler. Now just for a few more seamers and an all-rounder eh JB.

No chance while we're playing defensive, negative and fearful cricket. So yeah, you're right, not under this management.

I wonder where Zaidi will end up?? I do feel very sorry for Will Beer, who seems to be consistently overlooked. I'd like to see him being given a run in the longer form but with Briggs signing, this is highly unlikely. An overseas batsman would be great, if we have budget! Maybe Robbo has a Kolpak player lined up??? Perhaps Dean Elgar? Glamorgan struck gold with Colin Ingram, and even Derbyshire did their homework and signed Neil Broom from New Zealand, on a UK passport - similar to the Cachopa signing. If only we'd signed Michael Klinger!

Klinger is not a Kolpak player so it would have meant no Magoffin if he had been signed in this parallel universe.

If only we'd signed Michael Klinger! It shouldn't be highly unlikely, he's a better bowler so under fair management it's a chance for Beer, if he stays - and I wouldn't now that the much needed new coach is the very tired old one. Wright says Briggs is the best English one-day bowler, an opinion obviously not shared by Morgan & Bayliss, but it could be argued that Beer has been as good in that form, or any form, over the last five years so Beer can look forward to bowling in tandem with Briggs in all one-day cricket, I hope. It's just as simple in the longer form - four seamers for six weeks on result wickets, like the last season where, despite the moans of the coach and batters, we were winning more often than not. Meanwhile, the twirler twins thrash it out for the seconds, best man wins and in a fair and equal world gets the first team call up when it's sunny. A rigid but obviously adaptable plan. Zaidi could do a job here or there couldn't he. If he was younger, or English, or a proper overseas, I'd be disappointed he was leaving. He did alright in the end. Odd really that after 18 months of mediocrity Zaidi finally comes good and we let him go. He was a batsman who could bowl a bit as it turned out.
