I'd consider Briggs a better bowler than Beer in all formats, though that's not to say that Beer has been treated well over the years. We need two spinners on the staff though and who knows, Wright may rate Beer more than the previous captains and the coach and want to give him a proper go.

I believe Klinger has a European Passport, as does Henriques, but all the while there's a chance of playing for Australia, they'll remain an overseas

I think Briggs is a good signing. Luke Wright rightly says he's the best English one day bowler. He's not going to say Will Beer is the best is he? Even if he does think that. What sort of PR would that be for a new signing?
When I have seen Briggs bowl against Beer I have always thought they were too close to call in what they do. I think it promises to be an interesting fight between these 2 for 4 day cricket. I can't see Beer starting though, as per usual Robinson builds up his incomers as world beaters to the detriment of the homegrowns and they get first chance. Let's hope he stays injury free!

Briggs will be amongst a group of younger English spinners in the England Performance Programme to go to Dubai next month for a practice camp with spin coaching led by Daniel Vettori ( www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/story/928247.html. ) The article notes that Ravi Patel (Middlesex), Will Beer (Sussex) and Matt Carter will also be a part of the squad in a net bowling capacity. It seems to be a bit of a hotch-potch, having initially been announced as a Batting camp, and the whole thing is going to be led by Andy Flower, so no doubt it will be a pretty grim and joyless experience.

What sort of PR is it for the guy who has been at the club since he was 12, or so? The sort he's very much used to I spose. That 'hotch-potch' of a training camp will hopefully work wonders under the joyless Andy Flower. Beer will come back a killing machine - "You don't know man, you weren't there."

I wonder where Zaidi will end up?? I do feel very sorry for Will Beer, who seems to be consistently overlooked. I'd like to see him being given a run in the longer form but with Briggs signing, this is highly unlikely. An overseas batsman would be great, if we have budget! Maybe Robbo has a Kolpak player lined up??? Perhaps Dean Elgar? Glamorgan struck gold with Colin Ingram, and even Derbyshire did their homework and signed Neil Broom from New Zealand, on a UK passport - similar to the Cachopa signing. If only we'd signed Michael Klinger! It shouldn't be highly unlikely, he's a better bowler so under fair management it's a chance for Beer, if he stays - and I wouldn't now that the much needed new coach is the very tired old one. Wright says Briggs is the best English one-day bowler, an opinion obviously not shared by Morgan & Bayliss, but it could be argued that Beer has been as good in that form, or any form, over the last five years so Beer can look forward to bowling in tandem with Briggs in all one-day cricket, I hope. It's just as simple in the longer form - four seamers for six weeks on result wickets, like the last season where, despite the moans of the coach and batters, we were winning more often than not. Meanwhile, the twirler twins thrash it out for the seconds, best man wins and in a fair and equal world gets the first team call up when it's sunny. A rigid but obviously adaptable plan. Zaidi could do a job here or there couldn't he. If he was younger, or English, or a proper overseas, I'd be disappointed he was leaving. He did alright in the end. Odd really that after 18 months of mediocrity Zaidi finally comes good and we let him go. He was a batsman who could bowl a bit as it turned out. Get over it Fraudy, "county in signing player from outside shocker" - it's not illegal. Very negative, and sadly not surprising, comments about a very good new signing. Change the record.

Hey! Yeah alright. Wasn't that negative though - I said it was a pretty good signing in a slightly previous post. Actually, it's probably better than even that on reflection. But, all I would ask, if anyone was ever listening, is for the two to be judged from a level playing field. While we're rightly not playing a spinner in April and May, the best bowler of the two in the seconds gets the gig. Simple as, and fair. Both should play in one-day cricket and T20 I reckon. By the way, it's Frawdy or Fraudster if you don't mind Ashy. Or RFawden, Son of Oosapendem, King of the Jews, Ruler of the British.

Kent look set to release Tredwell at the end of this season and are prepared to send him out on loan in the meantime, for red ball cricket at least.
Timing is all. If Sussex had known that last winter, he would have been a better signing than Briggs.

What was the point of signing Danny Briggs?
He left Hants because he was frustrated at not getting in their red ball side and Robinson promised him he would be a fixture in Sussex's CC side. Then he got dropped (quite rightly) after three matches.
Now Wright has made it clear that he doesn'trate him much as a white ball bowler, either - in three of the last four T20/RLC games, he hasn't been trusted to bowl his full allocation. Today Wright gave the ball to Nash before he gave it to Briggs.
I feel sorry for the lad, because he was made promises by a coach who is no longer here to deliver on the pledge given. But if Wright is only going to give Briggs two overs - which I think has happened in his last two T20 games - we might as well play an extra batsman.

You and everyone else on here were about as keen as Sussex at the time, I reckon. I wasn't, and that Ashington wiped the floor with me over it. We shouldn't have started with him in the CC. We should have made him compete with Beer in the seconds to see who comes in, if or when. Nash coming on before him, having not bowled all season I think, could mean curtains for the lad. It should, in a harsh but fair world. It doesn't mean the end but earn your place.

Potentially out for the season with a knee injury. Oh dear! I also heard that Tom Haines has broken a finger. In other news we’ve signed Ishant Sharma for the first 2 months of the CC.
