The media circus is in full swing two days before the book is actually published! A link to the TV 'BBC Breakfast' KP interview this morning. The overall feeling is of sadness. KP has an emotional warble to his voice. How could it have come to this? Who is actually responsible? Some might say it was KP but others would suggest he was standing up to the bullying culture within the England camp not just for himself but for the other less strong players. Sad, sad, sad... What a waste of such a cricketing talent. For god's sake, take the ECB hierarchy and KP out for a drink - bang some heads, sort it out and make up! And end the England abuse culture immediately! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/29518475

fb : - the ECB is "far from perfect" , you say. So when it takes imperfect decisions (which it has done rather a lot over the past 12 months) is one not entitled to say so without being accused by you of "denigration"?
Your posts are usually full of reason and objectivity. But as soon as Pietersen's name is mentioned you go into an altogether different mode, instructing us to "ignore" everything he says.
I don't accept everything Pietersen says and am certainly not inclined to believe him for the puerile reasons you posit ("because you don't like the ECB" !!??) But yes, a deal of what he says sounds convincing enough to raise serious concerns about the conduct of Flower, Downton and others.
And why would he lie about things that could be easily disproven? For example, he says when he was sacked Downton never gave him a reason and the "disengaged" stuff was fed to the press but never said directly to him. I am inclined to believe that because why would he lie about it? He said on Radio 4 this morning that he never gave the ECB a 'him or me' ultimatum over Peter Moores , but offered to give up the captaincy and work under Moores and a new captain. That's not the kind of story you invent, is it?
And the text messages he quotes verbatim in the book - are they all to be discounted as evidence and we are meant to believe that his ghost writer made them up for him long after the event?
He is giving his side of the story, of course, and will paint himself in the best possible light. But there is a mass of minuted detail here that in my view he could not have simply 'invented', as you seem to believe when you tell us we must "ignore" him.
As for him being "in a minority of one within the cricket world" that is wishful thinking on your part - or perhaps your parameters of "the cricket world" chime with the pompous definition given by Giles Clarke who earlier this year dismissed all of us who don't hold a post as an administrator or are employed on a central or county contract as being "outside cricket".
From my position "outside cricket", I'll refer you to Pietersen's former England captain Michael Vaughan in the Telegraph this morning: "I have said for a long time that Kevin is one of the easiest players that I managed. It is important to speak honestly to him – to give him direction, freedom, and confidence to express his talents. If you did that, he was always behind you."

BM, I hear what you say.
KP's dressing-room track record is pretty appalling, by all accounts, so his complaints about the English dressing room haven't convinced me, at this stage.
Forgive me, but I'm going to delay taking a view until we've heard from all the parties involved. I think more people should be doing this, IMHO.

Whether it's good or not is opinion. But I don't see why I can't just ignore a book of gratuitous complaints about pretty much everyone with little insight about the cricket. The gratuitous and acrimonious assault on Matt prior tells you a lot more aboutPietersen than about prior ...but who really cares about yesterday's hero? move along...nothing to see here.

No Simon Barnes is not balanced, never has been and nor is he paid to be. Trust me - I used to be his editor! Andy Bull is more balanced in The Guardian, saying that everybody comes out badly from the book: "Some of the team’s behaviour, the namecalling, the petty squabbles over dropped catches, the pitiful Twitter spats, would have been embarrassing if it had been going on in the ranks of a school first XI, and yet here it is being committed by Pietersen, Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, and Graeme Swann, some of the finest players in England’s history." He has no time for Pietersen; in fact he loathes him. But he acknowledges that among all the score settling there is some stuff that cannot be ignored: "In amongst all this bilious, vindictive, guff there are some brilliantly astute points about what really went wrong, with the England team, with Flower’s management, and with English cricket." He concludes: "Shame on Flower, for making such a mess of the team he helped create, shame on the English players, for being torn apart by such trivial issues, shame on the ECB for sacking its most talented batsman and then briefing against him, shame on Pietersen himself, for this pathetic indulgence of his personal vendettas." Nothing to see here? I'd say there is plenty and it will reverberate around English cricket for a long time to come.

Only to be expected but Piers Morgan is ranting and raving about the ECB in defence of KP. It is hilarious as the 'SECRET - FOR YOUR EYES ONLY' ECB dossier on Pietersen has come to light. Whatever views you have of PM, his twitter is well worth a read. As Morgan points out the ECB can't even spell Al(i)astair Cook's surname correctly in the said dossier! twitter.com/piersmorganMeanwhile, 'Cricinfo' have updated their article on the dossier. Editor David Hopps gets into his stride. Weirdly, a link from PMs twitter to 'Cricinfo' and their full dossier has now been taken down. Have the ECB lent on 'Cricinfo'? www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/story/787889.htmlOne can see this story has giraffe legs to it and could end up pretty nasty for the ECB - especially if the KP dossier gets out to the general public and not just for 'Cricinfo' eyes. Suppressing it now will only make things worse for them.

The dossier is pathetic. No wonder none of it was actually used against him in the hearing with Cook and Downton, who are at least smart enough to have realised how risible the 'charges' were. And yes, the whistling is in there, along with the sin of subversively congratulating Gary Ballance on his Seth Efricen accent.
Just been reading some more extracts from the book. If Jonathan Trott does not come out and deny the story about his bust-up with The Big Cheese (screaming at him "who the f*** do you think you are?"), then do we presume it is true?
I also wonder what the younger players like Robson, Ballance, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes, Woakes, Buttler and Chris Jordan make of all this? I hope they are saying "we promise, promise, promise never to get as arrogant, conceited, cliqueish and childish as our so-called elders and betters."

This dossier appears to have gone under embargo, so it is impossible to view it, and therefore comment. A few points that seem to me worth making: Excellent reference by borderman to the Andy Bull article for Guardian The Spin blog. As borderman has said, it's theme is that the whole business reflects very badly on everyone involved in it, and although there are obvious lessons to be learnt - about management in general, over-filling the playing programme, playing spin politics much better than spin bowling - it looks as if they aren't being learnt. It then goes on to say "But you have to winnow a lot of chaff to find the wheat.", which is pretty much what you expect from any bog-standard ghosted cricketing "autobiography". Piers Morgan's ranting is, as always, very colourful and, as always, has another agenda. This time it's to create a smokescreen against likely accusations that the phone-hacking at the Mirror story will get closer to naming him, with what truth who can possibly say? A few weeks ago it was to open doors for him as a fierce, hard-hitting journalist bearing Jonathen Aitken's mighty sword of truth - about the time that his US TV show had just been cancelled for poor audience ratings and he needed to create a new persona to enhance his career opportunities. borderman has also reminded us that there is a new generation - a bit too early to call them a clique - of England players and I echo his hopes that they haven't been smeared with the same mess of fermenting dung. The worst thing that could happen to players like Robson, Ballance, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes, Woakes, Buttler and Chris Jordan would be to assume that life is always like this, that management is always reactive and fearful, and that the loudest mouth speaks most clearly. Finally, and echoing Andy Bull and against some views expressed elsewhere on this board, I do think it's important for Prior to respond to what's been said of him (I know, I haven't read the book but there is a whole chapter and god knows it's been leaked, or trailed, pretty comprehensively) because if he doesn't his reputation is completely shot and he will find it very difficult to continue playing.

The 'Daily Telegraph' read the dossier from 'Cricinfo' before the link was taken down. Here are some of the highlights. www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/kevinpietersen/11147103/Kevin-Pietersen-ECB-document-into-batsmans-behaviour-during-Englands-Ashes-tour-leaked.htmlWhat hasn't been stated, I would suggest, is that a private meeting arranged by the senior players behind Andy Flower's back, where both Pietersen and others vented their frustration at the ongoing appalling Ashes tour with criticism of Andy Flower's officious management/coaching style - was then allegedly 'sneaked' to Andy Flower by Matt Prior. And why KP feels so let down by Prior and why he feels so much hurt/upset towards him given KP was the one who initially orchestrated the Flower criticisms.

I'm told that the ECB has threatened Cricinfo with legal action. I can't corroborate that; I've heard it from one person and I certainly wouldn't publish it in a professional capacity without a second source and without putting it to the ECB.
But hey, this is a message board driven by gossip. And cricinfo publishes stories all the time based on a single source and when I challenged them over accusations made by one of their reporters against Panesar, they told me they do not recognise any duty to put even the most damaging accusations to the party being traduced prior to publication, so I have no qualms.
I also believe the single source is in a position to know and believe it to be true.
s&f: I think we knew that about Prior and the 'secret' team meeting long ago. Doesn't the central allegation go even further? Namely that Prior - who by then had already been dropped from the team - is not only alleged to have 'sneaked' to Flower, but was actually the moving spirit in convening the meeting in the first palce and was one of the coach's most outspoken critics?
Perhaps hhsussex is right. I've been saying for the last 48 hours that Prior should say nothing. But it may be that it has gone so far that he needs to seek exemption from the ECB's ban on players responding. Otherwise , as hh suggests, he's going to be such a figure of derision on every ground away from Hove next season that his position in the game may become untenable.

Reading all this stuff reminds me of the experience of listening to the separate views of a husband and wife who had just gone through an acrimonious divorce. Unless you particularly want to take sides, you have to accept that you'll never know all the facts and that it's usually 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. It may make for good gossip, but hearing them argue after the divorce is a sad, unnecessary and very unedifying experience.

But 'six of one and half a dozen of the other' is a considerable way on from your stance earlier today , which was to tell us all to disrergard anything and everything that Pietersen has said or written. I'm sure that you are correct and that there is wrong (and probably not very much right) on both sides. Which is why I hope the younger players who have now replaced KP, Swann, Trott and Prior and the coaches who have taken over from the discredited Flower and Giles have resolved that Team England will never again indulge in such juvenile and destructive behaviour.

I don't see any inconsistency here. If one spouse (KP) starts slinging mud, then best to ignore them, and even more importantly, don't take sides.
