Good weather and a good start to the season would be welcome. Let's hope enough our team start the season in decent form. The BBC weather forecast, which strikes me as highly unreliable, suggests that it will be OK for the first two days. All the more reason to wrap it up quickly, but that may be wishful thinking.

Joyce, Wright, Taylor and Magoffin are surely the first names down when fit. Machin before Wells on last season's form and Hatchett ahead of Briggs (and even that guy Beer) while there's still snow on the ground. Garton to build his case in the seconds.

if Joyce and Robinson got one thing right it was four seamers in April. They would then go on to make the catastrophic mistake of not changing that all sodding season. The funny thing is that Robinson couldn't stop signing spinners. He signed loads of them after he decided he didn't want Panesar and shunted him off to Essex. In quick succession we had Zaidi, Tredwell, Dockrell, Burgoyne, Wainwright and Briggs (even though when he signed the latter he was busily applying for other jobs and had no intention of being around this season). It was just that most of them only got a game or two before he decided he didn't like them after all and wished he hadn't signed them, just as he refused to consider Beer as a red ball option. All very strange - as was so much that went on in his last couple of confused and aimless seasons at Sussex after his focus shifted to finding a new employer.

The Northants squad appears only to have been announced on Twitter where it appears as an annoying series of rapidly changing .gifs of the players. They seem to be:
Jake Libby Ben Duckett Richard Levi Adam Rossington Josh Cobb David Murphy Alex Wakeley (C) Rory Kleinveldt Ben Sanderson Graeme White Azarullah Olly Stone
Presumably one of the three wicketkeeper-batsman will miss out .

DElayed start, damp outfield.
Luke Wright and Chris Nash reportedly out, Ben Brown captains. Briggs plays plus four seamers , not sure if Hatchett or Garton is the fourth; delayed start may mean they don't have to announce the XI yet. But it looks like Joyce and Wells to open, Taylor at three, Machan at four, Finch at five, Brown six and then the five bowlers.
Very disappointing start to Luke's captaincy career.

With both Wright and Nash out, the side looks short of a batsman; Robinson surely too high at seven.
Wonder with the delayed start whether there is any thought of calling up Cachopa? He should be able to get there by lunchtime.

11.30 start. No toss, Brown exercises the away captain's new right to bowl first.

Five games and so far and only one toss, at Chelmsford where Glos chose to bat. Away team chose to bowl in the other four games.

A quick chorus of Things Can Only Get Better is needed. Stephen Hollis stevehollis75 3m3 minutes ago
Hatchett on as sub fielder for Taylor who hurt himself dropping that catch at slip. Problems already for @sussexccc on injury front
The catch was offered by Libby off the bowling of Shahzad
