6 bowlers used before lunch. Probably better than six batsmen but only just.

A stunning vindication of the new ECB rule meant to encourage spin-bowlers and discourage medium-pace dobbers by offering the visitors the option to bowl first!
Given a weakened batting line-up it is understable that Brown felt he as better off using all his bowling resources but it doesn't look as if it has worked, and only at Southampton where Keith Barker has taken 5 for Warwickshire and Hants are 77/6 has there been much of an advantage for the bowling side. In the Essex v Glos game, Glos elected to toss, won it, and went in to bat against Jesse Ryder's feared trundles, but not too many ill-effects so far at 103/3.
Let us hope for a better afternoon session for Sussex, that the edges go to hand and are taken, and wait to see how both teams perform.

Ouch. In our defence, Northants are clearly one of the top sides in this division. Anyone wanna re-write their predictions?
Batter light, aren't we. Going into the game without Salt or Cachopa when there's injury doubts around Nash and Wright was stupid, frankly.
I worry (a little) that this new toss rule is gonna encourage sides to develop featherbeds. Then we'll go from one extreme tut-tuther, which ain't good. That comment ain't meant to be related to this game.

Why didn't we play another batsman? I wondered who would play out of Panesar and White in the end neither. I thought this toss thing was supposed to encourage spinners. When is Jordan back? When are Wright and Nash back? Who is the fitness coach? First day of the season and Nash and Wright are already injured. Our performance levels really have fallen over the last few seasons with us now being thrashed round the park by Northants. Our slip catching must improve. What does one expect thought with a complacent "relegation doesn't matter" committee and a jobs for the boys promote from within coaching staff rather than hiring the best. At the moment it's the men of Northants against the boys of Sussex. We are better than this and needs to start showing it on the pitch!

You're not entirely impressed are you CP. We didn't have another batsman in the squad, stupidly. I'm not even gonna attempt to answer your multitude of other questions.
Tough start, and we're only missing Jordan from the bowling attack. My questions are: Why haven't we replaced at least one of Hobden or Anyon? We've known for long enough. Our depth is shallow, now. It needed addressing, just ask Jonboy - although obviously he would have them replaced with all-rounders. Second question; Why is Garton playing ahead of Hatchett? He's too young, seriously, and he has done next to nothing for the seconds. That's where he should be for the foreseeable.
Very disappointing start with the usual baffling decisions and unanswered questions from the secret society of SCCC.

Fitness is disappointing. Shouldn't have 2 key players injured before the the first match. Although we can't judge until both sides have batted I think we might have a bit of a road on our hands. On that note however I wouldn't put it past us to make this surface seem like a minefield.

Finally bad light brings Sussex somemuch needed relief.
Just about as bad a first day of the season as one could imagine for the promotion favourites.
Four wkts in 88 overs v the students last week and two wkts in 82 overs v Northants today.
Struth. April featherbed wickets!

I've been out all day without access to any media, so rather shocked by the outcome of the day. What's gone wrong? Great Northants batting or poor Sussex bowling? I thought Davis said, Wright just had a back niggle and Nash referred to his foot splint on Twitter as "a niggle". Does the word have an inference I am not aware of?
When I spoke to Mark "voice of the Oval" Church last week, I asked him how Surrey romped to the Division 2 trophy last season. He explained they always batted first when the opportunity arose, put on a 400+ score and then bowled the opposition out twice ie. domination was the key to their success for, as Church pointed out, psychologically, division 2 teams are much weaker and more vulnerable to pressure.
Perhaps, Sussex can learn from Surrey? Day 1 of their season could not have been much worse.

Left at 16-30, I simply couldn't stand it anymore In four matches so far, our toothless attack has barely taken a wicket Don't think I'll be going back tomorrow

Oh and injuring your back child-minding during a business class flight before lecturing the squad on fitness levels not too clever either.

its very easy to blame Garton but the lad is only 18 and playing his first CC game. What about Robinson and Shahzad? They didn't look threatening either and Robinson was almost as expensive as Garton. The fourth seamer position is exactly where we should blood our young bowlers. The blame lies with the Captain for electing to bowl first on a road.
