This match is going from bad to worse. Now 208-8 with the follow-on imminent, can Sussex avoid a 2nd innings batting collapse this afternoon and then pray for the forecast rain to appear tomorrow?
When Luke does return what can he do to turn the batting around? And what is Murray Goodwin doing in the nets to improve the batters? Is the problem all in the batsmen's mind? Even more disturbing Goodwin is returning to Australia in around 5 weeks time. One hopes his "visit" to Hove has not been a waste of time.
Chris Adams was the obvious candidate as batting consultant but Keith Greenfield and Mark Davis decided against this, presumably because they feared it would upset the coaching pecking order. Question: Which is more important. A 100% all-firing batting line-up, or the fear that your dominion might be threatened? I was brought up to believe that families should be selfless.
Edit: Delighted to see the tailenders offering some fight. A 41 run partnership between Robinson and Magoffin - 249-8. 92 more runs required to stave off the follow-on. Just keep going until lunch... Oops, goatmouth... Mags out 251-9.

Ollie Rob's second 50 of the season now brings him level with Machan and one run behind Taylor, having batted one innings fewer than either and played with composure and restraint.
What can we learn from this?
On edit: Whittingham finally succumbed, but Robinson finishes 51 not out, averaging 49.00 and having helped add 106 in 36 overs. I'm not suggesting he bat higher but he puts the higher paid capped players to shame, and if he can get his bowling back he is probably the all-rounder Sussex have needed sincde M-J retired.

Sussex now need to score 213 runs to avoid an innings defeat and get through the next two sessions whilst praying for the hoped for rain tomorrow. A maximum of 9 points on offer 'if' we can miraculously gain the draw - if not a paltry 4.

What can we learn from this? Probably nothing that hasn't been alluded to or more forcibly stated on here before now. Robbo's been held responsible for everything from soggy poppadums to dodgy pitches and rightly so. I even seem to remember finding fault with him myself occasionally. But that boat has sailed and we have to move on. Decisions have been taken since his departure. Two overseas appointments and the tale of three captains. These five appointments already look pretty disastrous. Wright is yet to appear; Taylor's taking the money and wearing a box, Brown is hopelessly exposed as stand-in captain, and if this isn't enough, there's Cachopa. And maybe there won't be the Bangladeshi Tizer. Reasons to be cheerful Part Zero.

A minimum of 29 overs left and with Sussex 85-1, we may just get away with this match and a draw as rain is forecast for much of the day tomorrow. www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2633563Meanwhile, Essex are romping it against Derbyshire at Chelmsford and are the early hot favourites for the Division 2 trophy, given their present momentum, but the bad weather tomorrow seems to cover much of England, so we'll see.

We should be ok. Now we've got Scott Joplin at three.

We should be ok. Now we've got Scott Joplin at three. Very good. Currently 11 runs from 107 balls. Exactly what's needed to save the match, but it's a good job he's not auditioning for a place in the T20 side on Friday! on edit: well that put the kibosh on him. Another three dot balls and he's out for 11 from 110 balls...

Happening at Northampton, too, where Panesar opened the bowling and within half an hour he was joined by Keogh bowling off-breaks from the other end...
Shame the weather looks like wiping out day four all over the country tomorrow, because six of the eight matches would otherwise produce results, I think.
Assuming a wash-out tomorrow, Div Two will have seen 18 draws in 22 matches so far this season. But be thankful : it's the only reason Sussex aren't already cast adrift from the top half of the table!

I think the main thing that should be learned from this, is that both Brown, and Robinson, are batting in their correct positions. Then again, most of us knew that, and it's no coincidence that both look happier batting one place down the order
