Fatuous, but someone must think it a masterstroke Or more likely someone screwed up! Well, back in the real world, I shall go online on Friday morning and look at ALL the fixtures. Mind you, the excitement might make it difficult for me to get to sleep on Thursday night! Seriously, do they really think folks are going to wait up til midnight on a Thursday for the massive thrill of being the first to see next year's CC fixtures?

I am working in Asia this week so it will be something to mull over while having breakfast on Friday.

This rather naive, if not desperate, comment from someone posting on the We Are Kent messageboard, alongside a link to another county's announcement of the fixtures release: Looks like the fixtures will be available this Friday.I assume we will be in Division 2! Is George Kennedy expecting a reply from ECB or are they treating him with contempt?
To which the answer must be - why not, everyone else does! Incidentally that link is to Warwickshire, who are releasing all the fixtures at midnight on Thursday, or 0.00 on Friday, whichever you prefer. Are Sussex jumping the embargo gun by 6 hours for the T20 fixtures, and if so why?

The real question to ask is why the fixtures will contain two less championship matches per county. The season will be the longest in living memory with International matches at the end of September yet the decision was taken to reduce the championship. I can still see no justification for this measure.

Seriously, do they really think folks are going to wait up til midnight on a Thursday for the massive thrill of being the first to see next year's CC fixtures? No, they don't, it's a midnight press embargo. Has been common practice for years for official announcements and so on. Less common perhaps these days in the internet age, but that's all it is.

Press releases embargoed for O.O1 am are not actually midnight embargos at all. The timing relates to the cover date of the newspaper and the first editions of the following day's newspapers are available in central London from around 9pm onwards.

The real question to ask is why the fixtures will contain two less championship matches per county. Because the counties voted - unanimously, I think - to reduce the programme to 14 matches.

Accepting all the press embargo points that have been raised by others, but here is the ECB tweet from this morning:
#Summer17 fixtures coming! @natwestt20blast: THU 6pm @countychamp & @onedaycup: FRI
Now that looks like nothing other than a gimmick. If adhered to rigidly what possible difference can it make to publication by The Cricket Paper and any of the broadsheets who still bother with cricket fixtures that the T20 fixtures are released 6 hours ahead?

Yep, another PR triumph for the ECB.
