I presume it's the South African batsman on a Kolpak that has been rumoured for a while. Haven't got a name though

South African all-rounder van Zyl. More like "bowls a bit" On Edit: from the CricBuzz profile "The young turk can also chip in with a bit of right-arm dibbly dobblers. "

A bit more detail, now available. www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/stiaan-van-zyl-all-rounder-signs-three-year-deal-with-sussexDavis reckons that his medium pace bowling will give balance to the team, and perhaps it has been underused, but 52 wickets in 132 matches doesn't suggest matchwinning ways. It will be more of a bonus if it does come off and add to his batting. Looking at his figures I wonder if his price has come down a little bit since last year, when he played 3 disappointing Tests against England. It rather looks as if he went off the boiil then, and hope that he is getting back to his previous standard.

Cricinfo, copying the Sussex press release, have a sub-heading that promises a lot more than it delivers : South Africa future not clarified.
It is dangerous to make too many assumptions, particularly where Sussex overseas signings are concerned, but you would hope that we haven't signed somebody who will lose most of next summer as a tourist with either the full South African side or their A team. And yet 16 out of his last 26 first class games have been played for these sides. It looks as if he has been passed over for a slightly younger generation from this autumn, and after a hundred in his first Test his scores have not been overwhelming, but is he definitely out of the picture? Has he been given something more than a hint, as a result of which he has told his agent he is free to commit?

It sounds as if he has renounced his Test career to sign a three year deal with Sussex as a Kolpak

It's important that he underperforms for us so as not to be selected for either of the SA squads.
