HH, I am not suggesting Philander be replaced by another bowler, as by the time he leaves Jordan will have returned, and Wiese joined. However, I think our batting may need reinforcements, mid season, as there is not much cover for injuries, and we may need to recruit an overseas batter. Well, I am with you on the fact that we have so little cover for injuries amongst the batsmen, and I have consistently argued that Philander was the wrong choice, not because he is not a fine bowler, but because our need was for a batsman. However that deal is done, the budget has probably been spent with his, Taylor's and Evans's recruitment and we may find that it is 5 batsmen plus Brown, with lots being expected from our all-rounders. That isn't such a bad thing, and the development of Rawlins this winter could offer a very positive opportunity. I think in all of this we are assuming that Machan will not be fit. If so, it is fitting to reflect on the promise he showed and the achivement he made against the run of general form in 2015. It will be a great pity if we never again see strokeplay such as his brilliant 135 in 100 balls against Worcester at Hove that spring. Though I spent a lot of time last summer bemoaning his impetuosity it was thrilling when those tactics paid off.

Lose the expensive has-beens and Kolpak money grabbers and spend the masses of money you would save on a batting coach and T20 batsman/wicky.
Champ:
Nash Finch Wells Wright Machan Evans Brown Philander Archer Garton Whittingham
One Day:
Nash Salt Wright Finch Machan Brown Robinson Philander Beer Archer Garton
T20:
Nash Wright de Villiers Taylor Machan Salt Jordan Beer Archer Garton Mills

How does Sussex's bowling line-up for the Championship season look against the other sides, particularly Notts? Do Sussex have the strongest attack of anyone? As far as I know, Notts will have Broad (not), Siddle (possibly), Ball (maybe), Gurney, Hutton, Luke Wood, Imran Tahir, Fletcher and the ever-rolling Samit Patel. They are an effective squad but not a frightening strength. Sussex will have Philander for the first half, Wiese perhaps all through, Jordan occasionally, the ever-consistent Magoffin, then three young and exciting talents in different styles: Archer (fast), Garton (left arm and quick) and Robinson (medium fast swing and cut), supported by Whittingham and Sakande, Briggs and Rawlins. I think that gives Sussex a very considerable advantage over every other attack in DSivision Two, and most in Division One for that matter.

Looks very good, then. Incidentally, Notts won't have Imran Tahir either - joined Derbyshire.

We do look a little threadbare on the batting front, but in the short term anyway, if Joyce is a genuine selection option, we may be OK. If he isn't, then surely we have to consider an overseas batsman for the second half of the season. Ten front line seamers seems a bit overkill to me, especially when you look at our top order batting options. We also have to be careful not to block the progress of the current crop of talented young quicks that are coming through.

He clarified it himself in an interview with RTE Ireland in December: “I think this is more of a case of me deciding to come back to Ireland, to play first and foremost for Ireland and the interprovincials here. What’s secondary then is possibly playing some county cricket for Sussex. What used to happen in years gone by is that it was the other way around – I’d play for Sussex first and play for Ireland secondary." Joyce confirmed that while he could still technically return to play for Sussex it will only happen when Ireland and Leinster are not in action and in the case of an injury crisis."....If next year Sussex had lots of injuries, I’m available for seven games the way the fixture list sits at the moment.....they can communicate that a week or two in advance" If Mark Davis can forecast a week or two in advance what progress his batsmen are making with injuries then he's probably in the wrong business and should retrain as a clinical diagnostician.

Then it is a worry. As things stand, with Machan injured, and if we plan to play six batsmen, we will have just the one batsman in reserve. Compare that to the bowling, play four bowlers, and we could have another eight sitting it out With just the one keeper, we haven't done a very good job of balancing the squad

For what it's worth, I think Sussex have got things completely right here.
I think what Mark Davis says in the interview upthread is correct.
Of course, it's always the case that bowlers win matches, but particularly in Division 2, bowlers win promotion. And if you have a side that bats down to 9, 10, it is a very strong asset.
This is because most of the sides in Divsion 2 have two or three decent bowlers, but lack quality beyond that. Obviously unless they skittle sides out for 100, they can't do all the bowling, so once they have run out of steam and the ball is older, etc., you tend to get sides, let's say, going from something like 150-5 to 350 all out.
Most of the teams in Division 2 are a bit of a hopeless case for promotion because their bowling attacks simply don't have enough depth. So a team with lots of good bowlers that can bat down the order really ought to have the right formula.

If we bat first but get rolled over for 150 then it's a big ask for the bowlers to defend that. We had many good starts last year with Joyce and Nash but had middle order colaspses more times than I care to remember, add to that the inevitable injuries and I believe we are a batter/wicketkeeper short.

This is true, but in that case we have to have a five/five split with five front line bowlers if we are to really benefit. We still have the option from selecting from thirteen bowlers, plus some pretty useful occasional bowlers. Bowlers do win you matches, and even allowing for some bowlers not bowling in every format, I still think it's probably a couple of bowlers too many It is also useful that most of our bowlers can bat, and that in theory should strengthen the batting. However, I'm not entirely convinced that our likely top five is rock solid, and with so few options in reserve, it's possible the batting may struggle again Personally, I'd like to have seen two less bowlers, and a top order batsman recruited, plus maybe a young keeper (Jackson)

Given the batting situation described, I was somewhat surprised to see that Christian Davis is no longer at Sussex. I would have thought this would have been the year for him to step up. He put in the full 3 years at Leeds-Bradford, twice getting scores against strong Sussex attacks, and got the big daddy double hundred for the 2s. Then after not scoring in just 2 Championship matches it was chop-chop bye-bye, so the three years at MCCU "finishing school" was apparently all in vain.

What was his deal here, presumably on some sort of non contract deal. I guess we can call on Jenner and young Tom Haines, but neither have any sort of experience against county opposition. Although we are obviously short in the batting department, I am pleased we haven't padded the squad out with journeymen. We needed a class addition to replace Joyce, and Taylor, and I'm surprised we didn't use the overseas route

Unfortunately Davis didn't merely not make many runs, he had such abysmal performances as bastman and fielder as to make it obvious he was massively out of his class. I'd question too whether the Sussex attack he faced last spring when he made 65 for Leeds-Bradford was all that strong: Robinson, suffering from shin splints, Hatchett with all of his health issues, Shahzad with attitude problesm, and only the debutant Garton and Danny Briggs really fit and strong and switched on. Sorry he didn't make it and no doubt he was under pressure - as were Sussex with so many key batsmen unfit at the end of the season - but at age 24 he got a chance and wasn't able to live up to it. I'm afraid the 258 against a very weak Glamorgan second eleven side was over-flattering.

If Machan's injured and we play six batsmen JB, that should leave Salt, Haines, Jenner, Rawlins (who is much more batsman than bowler) and Ward in reserve - the perfect back-up, young and from the academy, generally. Five batters in reserve there.
Van Zyl and Evans have replaced Joyce and Taylor ain't they? Yeah I'm not impressed either. I agree an overseas batsman should be acquired later in the season though. We will surely sign a keeper. What happens if Brown gets injured? I have no idea who is supposed to step in, what am I missing on the keeper front? I'm not doing it, hurts too much.
