With the seasons start fast approaching, how do people feel about our prospects? For me, in championship terms anyway, although I'm not convinced about our top order batting, we should have enough quality in our bowling to be there, or thereabouts. I don't think we have enough firepower, batting wise, to make any sort of impression in the T20 Although evidence suggests that the 50 overs will be our weakest format, I foresee a slight improvement in this competition. With regard to the Championship, I feel a lot will hinge on the contributions of Archer, Whittingham and also possibly Garton, in something like that order. Because Magoffin and Wiese/Philander can't take all the wickets, so three other front-line bowlers are needed. Are at least two of those up to taking 50 wickets/averaging 25 or so? It will be needed. Unless someone like Robinson, or mystery man Shahzad are going to step up and do their stuff. Van Zyl seems to only be an occasional bowler, I'm assuming Jordan can't be relied to be around much at all, and Briggs can't be depended on to be a match-winner.

I would be confident of finding those 50 wickets from elsewhere. Don't forget, we also have Briggs to chip in when the conditions are right Personally, I hope we play a balanced five man attack, always finding room for at least one of the youngsters amongst the pace quartet. There might be some occasions early season, when we consider a spinner is not needed, and we may well play an extra batsman, but in the main, I hope it's four seamers and a spinner.

I'd go with....
Nash Finch Rawlins Evans Wright Brown Robinson Archer Philander Briggs Magoffin
I don't think Van Zyl will be available?

I'd stick Wells straight in when he is fit. Evans hasn't really impressed me in pre-season so I'd take him out and shift Rawlins down to make room but hopefully he'll prove me wrong!

My starting XI assuming Wells and Machan are injured: Nash Finch Van Zyl Wright (c) Evans Brown (+) Wiese Jordan Philander Archer Magoffin 1. Is Wiese likely to be here in time? 2. Jordan is in India 3. Archer is always going to bat higher than Philander 4. 5 fastish right-arm bowlers? Why?

Surely Briggs will play, he's been one of the pre season success story's, both with bat,and ball

Surely he won't bat lower than Archer

What about Ajmal Shahzad? Yesterday he tweeted a pic of his kit from his sponsor, so he's evidently around and presumably fit to go.

No. Shazad over Magoffin? No. Shazad over Wiese? No. Shahzad over Archer? Not really. Which leaves Shahzad to scrap hard for a place with Whittingham, Garton and Robinson, all younger and with lots to prove.

It's just that it was written on here a while back that there were rumours he would not even be at the club for the season's start.

Apparently his shoulder has been screwed for a few years now and Sussex have been trying to pay him off without sucess.
