Have to go but last wicket just fallen. Jofra a 5fa caught by Jordan who's the only Sussex player that can catch it seems. 287 would appear to be only slightly sub-par on this wicket. What would it have looked like without 5 dropped catches, 33 extras, and the umpires overruling a brilliant Wiese catch on the boundary? Strange innings all round.

What started as a good position at lunch has deteriorated into a dismal fielding performance and a great escape by Durham. Sussex digging their tunnel for them. A feeling of inevitable despair pervades the ground. Perhaps wait until we've had our 1st innings before we decide whether the Durham innings was above or below par.

Dropped catches, no balls and a couple of dodgy decisions by umpire Lloyd but Sussex's day.
What a find and a talent we have in Jofra Archer.

A mixture of feelings. We dropped too many and conceded a lot of extras. On the other hand, we were unlucky with the Wiese catch and Pringle and Coughlin were lucky that their snicks evaded our potentially clumsy hands. I'd have been happier with 250 but credit to Nash and Wells who battled well at the end. Fascinating day two ahead.

Well - it's my reading of the game so far. Probably wrong but their score has nothing to do with ours.

After yesterday's play I know where Vernon's middle name is it is "no ball" as he bowled no fewer than no balls! This sort of indiscipline can be the difference between winning and losing in a tight game. Catching also plays a vital part and Nash dropped two sitters at second slip off the bowling of Chris Jordan. There was also one very poor piece of umpiring which gave Pringle a reprieve. 287 with our dodgy batting line up maybe a tough ask.

Wells looking occasionally dominant and Van Zyl looking extremely competent appear to be getting the most out of a wicket that is losing its bite as it firms up in the sunshine. Pringle looks a good bowler and Onions and Rushworth as usual 0 the most of the conditions. There could be a lot of runs to come.

Does this explain why Sussex won toss and fielded after Durham turned down the opportunity to field first?

Perhaps the sun is getting to some of those in the bar but talk of monumental scores seems a bit premature, particularly after talk of 175 this morning. Still, good work Messrs Wells and van Zyl

HooRah! Something to cheer. Long time coming in the red ball game. After tea and a 1st innings lead climbing. Wells time off done him good! Back to the kind of form he was in when he first burst on the scene. We've been lucky that the pitch has quietened down and Graham Onions out of service but (probably premature) warm glow is returning. Tyne/Tees accents in the crowd noticeably absent. Feel sorry for Durham's task in next two days. Almost.

I had hoped to get to Hove for this one but of the two fellow Sussex fans up here who would have been my travelling companions, one is on holiday and the other is having his house renovated. Will have to make do with the last match of the season. Good to see Sussex performing in red ball cricket at last and great to see Wells back to form. Any idea what the problem is with Onions?

Excellent writing here www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2017/content/story/1099024.html by Tim Wigmore, describing the process of the day through the development of Wells' innings. This is one of the best young cricket writers and we are lucky still to be able to produce them with the old market of newspaper reportage in terminal retreat. Wells was pretty good too.

He has a bad back. I will always treasure the memory of a Robbie Coltrane (as Fitz) quip back to that remark: "So what? Celtic have four bad backs" Not something that has bothered them this season.

Thanks, not good. He missed an entire season a few years ago with a back problem. It effectively finished his England career.
