So imperious was Wells' batsmanship that Stiaan van Zyl was reduced to the role of incidental extra even as he scored an undefeated 141; at one point, Wells scored a full fifty, to progress from 157 to 207, while van Zyl faced a solitary ball.

What started as a good position at lunch has deteriorated into a dismal fielding performance and a great escape by Durham. Sussex digging their tunnel for them. A feeling of inevitable despair pervades the ground. What inevitable despair was that then?

It's a kind of existential dread that colours all other perceptions. Nice weather on Monday and a couple of pints of Harveys usuallt sets all to rights.

I also congratulate Adrian Harms on a great interview with Luke Wells. And of course it must have been a wonderful day for Luke himself and for those of you lucky enough to be there. But a few questions and thoughts: Luke spoke about lots of white ball practice recently. What is this? A white ball in the nets, I suppose! But presumably the practice is much more finely tuned for scoring quicker? Can anyone explain? I know it’s only one innings, but does anyone think Luke’s shot range has expanded? And, I’m wondering if the impact so far of batting coach Yardy is more on his technique or on his mentality? Years ago, we saw gritty opening bats like Glenn Turner and Brian Luckhurst become much more expansive mid-career, under the influence of the one-day game. Perhaps, we are now seeing the change in gear from Luke?

Just like the glory days again when Sussex bossed their games. Fantastic to see and Archer.... not enough superlatives on offer to express his amazing all-round talent. Not long before he's off to international climes and my colleague won't have to eat his pandora!

Sussex need to lock Archer down. Hopefully he'll show a bit of commitment to thank Sussex for giving him the chance!

Seafret stop play. I wonder how many times that happens to other county clubs?
hhs,
Last month when Archer took the first of his fifers, I overheard a supporter say to a colleague, "If Archer doesn't play for England I'll eat my pandora."
Of course, that may well happen for as a Sussex hierarchy member pointed out to me today, it will take 5 years before Archer qualifies to play for England, whereas the West Indies could beckon him tomorrow.

A pandora could be a charm bracelet, or a woman's name (cf Pandora Braithwaite in the Adrian Mole books). Do you think you may have misheard him saying "fedora", meaning a type of hat?
