An amazingly exciting match that I was lucky enough to witness. A mixture of positives and negatives from the game though. On paper, our side was much stronger than Glamorgan's lightweight side, but games aren't won on paper. Positives - 1) Great to see Ollie Robinson return with a bang - what a cool performance with the bat at the end 2) we won and have improved our promotion chances 3) Chris Jordan bowled well throughout 4) The form of Chris Nash continues 5) we took some excellent catches - notably Jordan, Robson, Brown and Wright. 6) Brown batted really well in the first innings Negatives - 1) we never dominated a second string side 2) We were lucky that Glamorgan spilt some important catches 3) Wright lost his brain to get out stumped for nought first ball 4) Brown didn't need to throw his wicket away when we looked to be coasting home - it was the start of the collapse 5) we should have batted first if possible - Glamorgan planned to bat first 6) we fought hard at times
I do hope Luke Wright has the sort of recovery of form that Nash had just a month ago. It would make all the difference.

Sussex CCC's Promotion Bid in Full Cry After Thriller in North Wales If you like thrills, spills, ups and downs while watching a sporting event Sussex CCC's latest Specsavers County Championship had it all. From the very first session on Monday it was entertainment all the way at Colwyn Bay Cricket Club with the result always in doubt until Oliver Robinson smashed a straight six late on day three. Sussex were nine down at that time so the match situation couldn't of been any closer ! The last day started under clear skies and pleasant temps with the hosts looking to boost their overnight advantage. They were looking to set a target of over 250. Chris Jordan bowled superbly taking 5 for 46 including taking the dangerous Meschede with a high caught and bowled. Wright, Briggs and Brown also contributed to a very solid fielding with excellent catches as the hosts slumped to 182 all out, a lead of 209. Comfortable, not a bit of it ! Luke Wells dangled a bat at the very first ball which found an edge, nought for one. Hogan and Carey bowled like demons for 10 overs as the Sussex order played and missed. For the second time in the match Angus Robson left a ball which then jagged in to take his off stump. Two for 10. Stiaan van Zyl was dropped on 3 at slip, a dolly to be honest. 14 for 2 at lunch. After the interval, in the best weather of the day, Chris Nash and van Zyl found some form to produce a partnership of 90 runs at which point Sussex fans were feeling very confident. However the hosts were in no mood to roll over and they introduced spinner Salter into the attack. He took out van Zyl with his first ball LBW and then came Sussex's ugliest moment in the entire game. Luke Wright strolled out, danced down the wicket wafting away, stumped and then strolled back. The ground in shared disbelieve. That set the tone for an amazing hour of cricket as Nash, Jordan, Weise and skipper Ben Brown all got caught trying to move the score on. At tea it was 173 for 8 and nerves shredded. Archer went LBW for 6 leaving Briggs and Robinson to score 20 runs for victory. With Colwyn Bay holding its breath Oliver Robinson became the hero with a final straight six into a posse of Sussex fans on the bank. You couldn't make it up. Sussex won by 1 wicket. With 4 County Championship matches to go Sussex move into that important 2nd Division 2 promotion spot. Getting back to division one has always been the number one objective so things are moving in the right direction. Head coach Mark Davis takes his troops to Northampton next Tuesday where they will be looking to secure yet another win. But perhaps he might be hoping for a much less stressful passage. Many thanks to Colwyn Bay Cricket club who produced a stunning festival of cricket at their beautiful ground. Hopefully they will look back at the experience and be rightly proud of a job well done. Huge messages of congratulation to the hordes of Sussex fans who made the trip. I think you will agree this is an event that will stick in the mind for years to come. Well played Glamorgan who started with a very young team. Good luck at the Nat West Blast t20 finals on Saturday. Finally my Sussex man of the match goes to Skipper Ben Brown who not only scored the most Sussex runs and took five catches he skippered with calm assurance through out and held his team together through out a very tough examination.

Leaving aside hero Ollie Robinson, like 'everpresent', I was especially delighted with Ben Brown's performance not just as a cricketer but as a leader.
When Sussex needed a Captain's innings, Brown delivered with both the bat and keeping gloves. Having written a recent feature about him on the WickedCricket Blog, I truly believe Sussex have finally discovered a leader not seen since Chris Adams. A true Captain steers his team home and offers inspiration when required. He infects the side with determination and grit when the chips are down and finds a way to pull them over the finishing line. It is not just about leading by example but giving that 'X' factor value that only those born to lead hold.
Well done Ben. I can't remember such an important match for Sussex to win, in a long time, for a whole variety of reasons and you led from the front and proved your mettle.

Thanks for your varying but equally interesting eyewitness accounts philh and 2015t20everpresent. Yesterday's play produced nearly 5000 page views for this site, far more than any day of the season so far and double the audience for Monday or Tuesday.

That isn't likely to ever change whilst Mark Davis is the Sussex head coach. Yawn yawn yawn, same old obsession with homegrown players 💤 Huge contradiction here Sharkey, you want a team full of homegrown Sussex players, but when the opposition do it they're the worst eleven in the history of championship cricket...hmmm.... Same old rubbish from you!

Long way to go. Glamorgan will bat again today, so by the evening we'll see where we are. My problem is Wiese. No wickets and when his side needs him, no runs. It's not just this comp it's been the same in T20. Remember Middx at Lords? Sorry but Greenfield needs to step in here, over ride Davis and pay Wiese off. He has been one of the poorest overseas players I can remember Sussex signing. No doubt someone with better recent history will find another! I'm with Liquidskin, more homies. Young players from U10 in the county structure need to have the dream they can play for Sussex. If they have the feeling that you only play if you're an import, they'll give up the dream. So important for youngsters to have a dream. Wiese isn't an overseas player. He will be once we leave the EU and Kolpaks are banned.
