An old-fashioned Bank Holiday seaside outground fixture for the start of, either the run-in for promotion or the fizzling out of another season of promise and blunders. Whichever it is to be has to be resolved now. We know that, whatever sort of side we might like to have, there are enough good batsmen and bowlers to field a side that should comfortably beat Glamorgan, and Derbyshire, and Northants, probably Durham too. Can it beat Notts? Probably not, which does raise the issue of getting a balanced side capable of competing successfully in Divison One. For this game and for the rest of the season a side featuring the team and options below should do well enough, and still have reserves of quality and promise in Rawlins and Burgess and possibly Robson amongst the batsmen to meet the inevitable spate of banana skins, over-zealous training disciplines and sheer pratfallery that usually occurs! Nash Wells Finch Van Zyl Wright Brown Wiese Jordan Archer Briggs and one of Magoffin, Whittingham, Garton, Sakande according to fitness and circumstance.

Wells seems to perform better at 3 so I wonder if Robson will come in to open?
Nash Robson Wells van Zyl Wright Brown Jordan Wiese Archer Briggs Magoffin ( Whittingham, Garton or Sakande if Maggs remains injured )

Will Nash wanna open after scoring his first ton of the season down the order? We're in a bit of a pickle with our batting line-up as far as I can see, unless Nash does open.
Forget Mags, in the nicest possible way. One man in with a good shout after recent seconds performances is Robinson.
We've got some really good players, but half of them don't get picked.

I thought that after the century he scored Nash wasn't going to open in the championship?

Will Nash be fit? He needed a runner in the last T20 match.

A squad of 14 is selected www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/preview-championship-run-in-starts-with-trip-to-colwyn-bayBen Brown (captain) Jofra Archer Will Beer Danny Briggs Harry Finch Chris Jordan Chris Nash Ollie Robinson Angus Robson Stiaan van Zyl Luke Wells Stuart Whittingham David Wiese Luke Wright Certainties: Brown, Archer, Jordan, Nash, Van Zyl, Wells, Wright Strong possibles: Briggs, Finch, Wiese Fringe: Beer, Robinson, Robson, Whittingham That Robson is in the squad at all suggests that he will play again as opener with Wells while Nash continues in the middle order. That might push out Finch for the time being. Then Robinson, whose recovery from injury has been marked by very strong all-round performances with the Second Eleven, could edge out the inconsistent Wiese. That would support the case for Whittingham to be retained despite his expensive first innings bowling against Worcestershire. Robson Wells Van Zyl Nash Wright Brown Jordan Archer Robinson Briggs Whittingham That team has three fast-medium to fast bowlers, a medium pacer who can bowl very good off-spin and a slow left-armer. Colwyn Bay has the reputation of being a batsman's pitch; Aneurin Donald equalled the record for the world's faster double hundred there last year against Derbyshire, whilst Steve James hit 309 not out against Sussex out of a total of 718-3 in 2000, the last time Sussex played there. A balanced attack and luck with the toss would both seem to be vital requirements.

Very much altered priorities for Glamorgan in their team selection Glamorgan squad to face Sussex at Colwyn Bay: Selman, Morgan, Murphy, Donald, Carlson, Salter, Brown, Meschede, Cullen, Smith, Carey, Hogan (c) Their release specifies "With the Welsh County reaching NatWest T20 Blast Finals Day (Saturday, 2nd September), a number of players have been rested for the journey north presenting an opportunity for younger players to make their mark. In total, eight players who have gone through the Glamorgan Academy have been selected within the squad.." www.glamorgancricket.com/cricket/news/2017/august/eight-academy-graduates-picked-for-north-wales-clash.html#SrvK7WmHOTJLAUig.99This looks like a good opportunity for Sussex to gain maximum points. Either that or a massive heffalump trap!

Either that or a massive heffalump trap! Looks like Glamorgan 2XI v Sussex then with Jacques Rudolph, Colin Ingram, Will Bragg, David Lloyd, Chris Cooke, Graham Wagg, Timm van der Gugten and Merchant de Lange all missing. Their top six looks particularly weak with Morgan and Salter who normally bat 8/9 down to bat at 2 and 6. The last time they did this it didn't turn out well: They need Donald to score another double ton (assuming anyone can stick around with him for long enough). Should be a routine win for Sussex.

If we can't win this one against a weakened Glamorgan side we don't deserve to go up.
Win the toss, bat first, fill your boots.

A lively discussion about this game - and also about the internal Welsh politics of playing "home" Glamorgan games 180 miles away in North Wales - on the Glamorgan board of our friends ViewFromTheBoundary ( forum.viewfromtheboundary.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3078&start=15 ) I particularly like this comment: "I can just imagine the howls of anguish by some if Glam were in the position that current promotion contenders are in, and a team put out a Second X1 against their rivals."
Kent, of course, threatened the ECB with litigation over the Durham relegation issue last year, claiming that they should have been promoted. I wonder what their reaction will be IF Sussex win and this win is the difference between Sussex and Kent at the end of the season?
