The battle for mid-table continues.A maximum points victory for Durham would bring them to 111 points, exceeding the current totals of Derby and Glamorgan, and with the knowledge that their actual points collected was 159. Their batting has been worst affected by the relgation and the losses or unavailability of Stoneman, Borthwick and Jennings, but Steel has made a big impression, Collingwood has rolled back the years to top 1000 runs, and others have chipped in with useful innings here and there when needed. Rushworth remains a highly dangerous bowling, especially in his home conditions, and McCarty and Coughlin too have had their moments.
What of Sussex? Hopeless to expect them to drop Wiese, and there will be pressure to replace one of Whittingham or Garton with a spinner, now that the horse has bolted. Will Evans mysteriously appear in the squad once again, looking to boost his first-class average for Sussex of 2.75? What about Robson: is the experiment over and should Finch get a chance to reestablish himself as opener? How about Rawlins, does he not deserve a chance to follow up on his Arundel innings now that we have the chance to invest in the future of the side?
Answers on a postcard.

I've run out of postcards hh but my two-penn'th is that we should play the younger ( or less experienced) players. Sakande deserves a go as do Salt and Rawlins but they won't all play in fact it wouldn't surprise me if we went for the same side as against Derby.
Robson hasn't converted his 2nd XI form into the 1st team and I'd be dissapointed if we gave him a contract, I don't think he's any better than Finch/Rawlins/Haines/Jenner. I'd rather we saved the money to bring in an O/S quality opener.
Briggs has been coasting and his CC average is just that, average. We haven't seen a repeat of his early season runs and after his second full season with us he's remained a bit of a steady Eddie and rather disappointing.
Salt and Beer are both out of contract at the end of the season and whereas Beer has had a few more games than Salt in the OD sides they've both been underplayed as they were last year. Beer obviously has no ambition to progress his career as he would have moved on years ago but I think Salt is worth keeping hold of. I'd like to see Salt playing v Durham just to see what he can do.
van Zyl and Wiese have taken a while to get going but both have started to make decent contributions and we're stuck with them for another 2 years so hopefully they'll hit the ground running next season. I'd rest both of them for this game and play Salt and Garton.
Whittingham deserves to keep his place.
Nash Finch Wells Wright Salt Brown Rawlins Archer Jordan Garton Whittingham
Edit: I forgot about Burgess, he's definitely worth a contract imo.

Agree Joe, Robson hasn't manag d to convert his second eleven form into meaningful scores for the firsts. However, I'm still undecided about whether he's worth a contract It's the same for the other out of contract players, but I suppose it depends what our plans are for next season Listening to the coach, it seems we might have to put up with this mediocrity for a couple more years, in which case, Robson, Salt and Beer might be as good as we can expect

Rushworth has had a disappointing season but Onions showed more than a glimpse of his former self with six in the first innings against Kent to become Durham's all time leading wicket taker. Mark Wood is also back in the ranks so the Durham attack should be pretty lively. Is anyone making the long trek up to Chester-le-Street?

The squad:
Wells (c) Archer Briggs Burgess (wk) Evans Finch Garton Jordan Robinson Salt van Zyl Whittingham Wright
Brown has supposedly sustained a back injury so Burgess comes in for him and Luke Wells captains.

A very revealing press release, revealing for the things it doesn't say.
"Having played against Derbyshire, Chris Nash, Angus Robson and David Wiese are rested."
David Wiese last week seemed to be anxious to go home, so maybe he has his wish?
Meanwhile congratulations to Luke Wells on being handed the poisoned chalice and good luck to him.
What sort of team will come out of this? One like this perhaps: Finch Salt Wells Van Zyl Wright Burgess Jordan Robinson Archer Briggs Whittingham I can think of no reason why Evans should be picked over Finch or Salt, and after the debacle against Derby they must play a front line slow bowler to balancde the side, which means no place for either Garton or Whittingham. Desperately hard to choose but probably Whittingham will get the place as reward for his 5 wickets. But if Garton had had a few more games to get rid of the rust, his awkward angle and devastating yorker, and better all-round game, would get him the nod.

" having played against Derbyshire " can't be used as a reason to rest players because that also applies to the rest of the team who played them! Once again a ridiculous press release. Why not be open and honest? They must think the fans are stupid. Davis says " after a dissapointing two weeks we want to finish strongly" then goes on to name a rookie squad! Why not say ' we can't win promotion now so we're going to play some of the younger players '
I have no confidence in Davis as a leader, coach or spokesperson for Sussex.

It's all so shallow and transparent. Is there no beginning to this man's talents?

Durham's squad is Paul Collingwood (c), Keaton Jennings, Tom Latham, Cameron Steel, Graham Clark, Jack Burnham, Michael Richardson (wk), Ryan Pringle, Brydon Carse, James Weighell, Graham Onions, Chris Rushworth, Josh Coughlin No Mark Wood, Paul Coughlin or Barry McCarthy, but Onions is there, the batting is about as good/fragile as Sussex, and some youngsters are also included. www.durhamccc.co.uk/news/squad-vs-sussex/

Durham win the toss and bowl first. So we obviously wanted to bat first and Durham wanted us to bat first.
Sussex:
Wells Finch van Zyl Evans Wright Salt Burgess Jordan Robinson Garton Whittingham.
Finch out LBW to Rushworth first ball.
No Archer or Briggs so only 4 bowlers. I would imagine van Zyl will bowl a fair few overs.
