Re Gidman, he can get a divorce can't he Maybe but Notts are prepared to pay 50% more in terms of salary than Sussex can afford.

If Lewis is fit, and the match being at Scarborough, maybe a four seamer attack of him, Mags, Hatchett and Hobden. Still leaves that problem position at six with no obvious candidates to fill it, unless we can patch up Mattie Prior Selecting Lewis ahead of Beer or Zaidi would weaken the batting further which is something we cannot afford to do. And it supposes we can find a solution for the number six position. Finch is in no form at all, ditto Brown. Zaidi has had plenty of chances but has never looked capable of batting any higher than eight or nine. Jackson or Piolet?

Brown is averaging 30 which is below his career average of 34 but certainly I think he is capable of batting six.
For Scarborough we need five bowlers and with the pitch likely to take spin it would be a great opportunity to play Will.

I suspect we will try and compromise here, bat Brown at six and try and pad the batting out by selecting bits and pieces players like Piolet and Zaidi at seven and eight. Just three front line bowlers would be my guess

Just three front line bowlers would be my guess It is no more a deliberate strategy to compromise than what I implied at the start of the thread: we do not have a well-balanced squad, and with injuries and International calls we have run out of options. In this context Beer is as much of a bits-and-pices player as Piolet or Zaidi. Robinson/Joyce have never regarded him as a first-team specialist spinner and when he has performed he has seldom been given the ball for long spells. Whether it's cause or effect he is now a white-ball specialist and can't be regarded as a specialist bowler. For what its worth, this is the weather forcast for the game: www.worldweatheronline.com/Scarborough-weather/North-Yorkshire/GB.aspx

Battleaxe - Of course Zaidi will be preferred. Robinson has got to play to justify his decision of signing him in the first place. Beer should play but he won't. We don't need a loan batter. Why have we released Machan to Scotland? He should be playing for Sussex! Jonboy - Seconds bowled yesterday Hobden (4), Sakande (3), Lewis (2) and Hudson-Prentice took the wickets. Wells, Finch, Jackson and Zaidi also playing. With Salt, Cammish, Haines and Doram making up the side. Gidman's wife wants to move North so a move to Sussex is highly unlikely. More likely to be Durham, Notts, Lancashire or Yorkshire. I must say, Hobden has produced some consistently good figures for the seconds this season. Coupled with Hatchett's improved performances in the one day stuff, the cupboard is not totally bare when it comes to producing seamers.

HH, sorry Beer is a bowler who can bat. He bowls enough for the seconds to be a specialist. The problem is he doesn't get to play when the wickets will suit him, which was from Horsham, dry weather, dry wickets etc. As for Robinson & Joyce not trusting, it looks to me much more a question of safety first. We have safe wickets and safe teams. It all leads to boring cricket. They should be more adventurous. Only a change of leadership will make this happen. I think the club management should be bold at the end of the season. I would like to see a new direction in the coaching management. Someone from outside to come in. Keep Robinson I think he has something to offer still, but a new number 2 and even lower down changes. It all too cosy from where I watch.

Keep Robinson I think he has something to offer still, but a new number 2 and even lower down changes. It all too cosy from where I watch. Again parts of this I agree with. The biggest problem for Will, is the balance of the side. If one of our top six could be considered a front line bowler, then I'm sure more opportunities would be afforded Will. I don't think there would be too many counties where Will would risked in a four man attack. This is key, not only for Will, but to give the skipper enough options to play more positive cricket. When Luke bowled, it wasn't so much of an issue, although of course then, Panesar was the beneficiary. As I've mentioned, Gidman would be the perfect signing for us, but yes we are probably not in a position to entice him here. There are not too many genuine all rounders in the game today. Luke, who was probably more of a batsman who bowls, but good enough to operate as a fourth seamer, is a big miss. A situation compounded by the loss of Chris Jordan, a bowling all rounder. We have to try and rectify this situation this winter, but that will not be easy given our budget constraints. A scarcity of available genuine all rounders and hamstrung by long contracts awarded to some senior players, mean that we might have to wait until the following year to sort the mess out. So it may be continued frustration for Will I'm afraid, although I'd caution against any thoughts of looking elsewhere, as he's unlikely to find the situation much different at any another county.

Why have we released Machan to Scotland? He should be playing for Sussex! Maybe true, but he hasn't played a FC match since Yorks at Arundel in mid June.

According to the PA report of the Kent v Sussex 50 over game, in which Tredwell nicely undermined our batting Tredwell spins out his other team " James Tredwell's seven-over stint of 4 for 27 - against the team he rejoins on County Championship loan later in the week ...." If this is true it is excellent news for Scarborough, even giving a little more strength to the batting, as well as giving us the prospect of control and perhaps taking wickets if he continue the form he showed at Horsham. Like others on this board I had read Robinson's announcement of his re-engagement when he said that the extended loan would cover one Championship game to mean that it ran out before Scarborough, but perhaps that was wrong. If Jon Filby or anyone else who knows still read this board perhaps they could comment and let us know? " Sussex have re-signed England spinner James Tredwell on a month’s loan from Kent Tredwell played three Championship games last month and returns in time for Monday’s clash with Warwickshire at Horsham. Coach Mark Robinson has opted to bring back the experienced Tredwell as Sussex attempt to pull clear of the relegation zone rather than turn to leg-spinner Will Beer. Tredwell will only play four-day cricket as he remains in the Kent team for Twenty20 and the Royal One Day Cup. Robinson said: “We’ve got the nod from Kent to bring James back which is really good. “It is a bit of a strange one as we only play one Championship game during the month but he will give us a bit of stability." On Edit: And that is corroborated by Steve Hollis in his Twitter account here The @kentcricket spinner will be playing for @sussexccc at Scarborough on Friday! So when is Robinson going to make an announcement about a player's contract or loan status that is accurate and believable?

My son overhheard one of the sussex players saying to another "Treddy is travellling up with Wrighty" When he mentioned this to me on the way home last night, I pointed out that there had been no statement form Kent on the matter. But. then again Kent can somtimes be a little slow on announcing news. Perhaps the deal was done in the middle last night. Ed: Treddy you're bowling well again I see. What you doing over the weekend? Do you fancy a trip to the seaside? Treddy: Only if you buy me an ice cream at the end of each day! Ed: We got a deal!

The squad is:
BC Brown C Cachopa LJ Hatchett ME Hobden CF Jackson EC Joyce (capt) J Lewis SJ Magoffin CD Nash SA Piolet JC Tredwell LWP Wells LJ Wright
Anyon, Yardy, Hamilton-Brown and Prior all injured, Machan playing for Scotland.
To me it looks as if two choices need to be made: Jackson or Piolet for a batting place, and Hatchett v Lewis for the remaining bowling position. I'd welcome giving a chance to Jackson to show if he can establish himself as a batsman and a number 2 to Brown, not least because I suspect we'll see no more of Prior.
The bowling is more problematic. I'm delighted and relieved that we still have Tredwell, and his batting abilities are such that the tail is much stronger than in any other combination of players. Magoffin is a given, and that leaves two places. Hobden looked so fast and dangerous at Hove against Northants, and seems to be in form judging by the figures from the Second Eleven match at Hove, so I would go with him to get some life and nip from the Scarborough wicket. And because it is such a batsman's strip and if we don't make early breakthroughs we may have to resign ourselves to long spells of containment I would go with Lewis over Hatchett. Hatchett simply hasn't generated the pace you would think he was built for, and this predicatble speed rather negates the awkward angle of his delivery. I'd be delighted if he made the big breakthrough but aftre several years of waiting I don't think its going to come.
Yorkshire's squad is strong all round-Bairstow+, Bresnan, Brooks, Gale*, Leaning, Lees, Lyth, Patterson, Pyrah, Rashid, Sidebottom, Williamson - and I presume that Pyrah will miss out as Sidebottom, Bresnan, Brooks, Patterson and Rashid can offer plenty of stamina and variety between them. They have to be the favourites given their form this season and the disparity between the two teams in terms of the quality of available players. I would be very happy if Sussex came away with a draw from this.

Piolet at 6 makes the batting look very weak. Not sure why he is picked as a 4 day cricketer as not good enough with bat or ball, he is a bits and pieces cricketer. Why we released Machan to Scotland I am not sure.
