For all the potential Brown has he seems to consistenly under achieve for me. He had the chance to kick on and be a real England contender given early promise but he can never seem to have a consistent run of scores in 4 day or 1 day cricket. His keeping has improved considerably since coming into the side but I wonder how Jackson will ever improve without first team cricket lets not forget he was also an England Under 19 wicket keeper as was Brown. A bit of a tough one there for Sussex, in that Brown has, as you say, become a very good keeper, albeit an inconsistent batsman, and there has always been the shadow of Prior hovering, to be drafted in for batting or keeping practice as England have dictated. That is one of the realities of central contracts, that counties cannot necessarily manage their own normal career development plans when their stars become taken up by England. I think now there is a much better chance for Jackson to bid for a place of his own; for the balance of this season there will be no Prior to be concerned about, so he has a chance to gain a place as batsman or as keeper on his own merits. Next year may give him even better opportunities; much will depend on how the operation goes for Prior and what his state of mind is following that. I would have liked to see him play in this match as a batsman, in place of Piolet, and worthy as Piolet is, particularly as a one-day bits and pieces player, I think that his continued selection does stand in the way of development for some of your younger players, particularly now in the fag-end of the season.

Kane Williamson 90*, 74 more than he should have after Tredwell took a clean slip catch which wasn't given after Yorkies voiced their opinion much to Joyce's disgust. The standing umpire Lloyd didn't see whether the catch was clean and so conferred with the square leg umpire Hartley. Williamson even started walking before stopping and coming back. Is this the action of a batsman who thinks he is not out? Hartley gave Bairstow out lbw which was definitely too high. All in all not impressed with the quality of umpiring in this match.

I did say that we could be in for a lot of bowling to keep runs down, and that's why I went with the unadventurous choice of Lewis. LMAO as I type this and simultaneously see that Wells has got a flukey one!

Does anyone know why has Tredwell bowled so few overs. Seems an odd decision but, then again that's how I have seen Joyce captain all season. No flair and odd decisions.
As for Brown, having seen Billings play last week I wonder why Brown hasn't learnt to adapt his game to make similar scores in overs cricket? Where are Davis and Hopkinson in his development?
Disappointed with the coaches development of players! I think they need to be appraised by the committee. They're all far too cosy for my liking. New eyes, new ideas, new approach.

Whatever the outcome of this match, congratulations to Luke Wright on a magnificent 100, and to Piolet on building such a good stand with him.
This is the 4th hundred partnership Luke Wright has been involved in this year, also only the 4th time 50 has been reached for the 5th wicket - all the others were in the early 50s, and all had Wright in them. Great to see but our batting this season is a story of reliance on Joyce for the first few wickets, Wright for anything in the middle, and some good hitting right at the end.

That was annoying, but a very good partnership. A chance now for Brown to prove his worth, as another similar partnership will save the match. Once again, I implore Robbo to move Luke Wright up to number three, he has the technique and tenacity to stick around for a big score and build proper partnerships. With him at three, and Joyce at four, we would have our best batters batting together at the top of the order. As for the rest, well they need to take a leaf out of Luke's book. He was always the quick fire thirty and out guy, but he's learned to graft and craft an innings, and that's something Nash, Wells, RHB and Brown need to learn.

I agree that Wright has reached maturity in the last two years, particularly this season but graft? With 106 in 128 balls at a strike-rate of 83 for this innings, and of nearly 67 overall for the championship the last thing he has done is to graft. He has played his strokes with assurance, a little bit of luck sometimes, but with increasingly good judgment. Piolet has been the grafter and his gritty little innings was worth its weight in gold, even if it does show up his fallibility at this level of the game. We do need proper batsmen at 5 and 6. I think 5 is a good position for Wright to be in, now that we have Cachopa in the team. The problems are at the top of the order, where Nash's poor season now highlights the fallibilities of Wells, and in the late middle order. Next year perhaps Yardy could drop anchor at 6, but Brown really has to bat consistently now that he has competition from Jackson and perhaps from Prior, if he has a hunger for the fight after his surgery.

Yes I would agree with all of that, although I wasn't necessarily referring to just this innings. To be fair to Nash, he's normally good for 800-1000 runs, although not going on to post big scores may be something we have to live with as far as he's concerned. Wells does have the temperament to graft, but it's just not been happening for him this season. I'm not sure what it is, but so many of our batsmen seem to have gone backwards this year. back to this match, we need to hang on and force a draw, especially as it looks as if Lancashire will force an unlikely win.

Well Brown didn't last long did he. Another reason why Wright needs to bat higher up, he often has to taker unnecessary risks as he's often in danger of running out of partners

Very disappointing Not to lose, although that's always disappointing, but to throw it away having posted 360 in the first innings. Don't get me wrong, Yorkshire are a very good side and I didn't really expect to win, but to get ourselves in such a position of strength only to surrender so meekly, that's really hard to take. Some players just never showed up and really need to take a long hard look at themselves. We're right back in the relegation mix now.

Taking your last point first, jonboy, I don't agree that Sussex are candidates for relegation. We have 3 games to play: against Lancashire, Notts and Northants. Assuming the very worst, that all three matches are ruined by rain, we would expect to gain about 20-25 points from these games, bringing us to 175-180. Lancashire are currently 13 games played for 135 points: from their 3 games they must get 45 or thereabouts to be ahead of us, which requires at least one convincing win. It isn't likely to happen next week against Yorkshire; it might happen at Hove, although that runs against the bad weather scenario, and also against the spirit of the Sussex team since they overcame the initial depression and bewilderment of the match-fixing scandal. Their final game is against Middlesex, who, with a game in hand are currently 15 points behind Sussex and only 10 points ahead of Durham who have played the same number of games. Better perhaps to look at the number of wins: Lancashire 3 now and Durham 2; the mediocre counties of Sussex, Somerset and Middlesex on 4, and the elite trio of Warwicks, Notts and Yorks on 6. Of course we have recently defeated very comprehensively one of that elite trio. I don't feel complacent in any way, but I think the focus should shift to what kind of team Sussex should have next year and beyond. For the match just concluded, I think Sussex did well to post a good first innings total and poorly in losing the first four second innings wickets so quickly and thus sealing their fate early on; I don't think we ever had any prospect of winning on a fast wicket against the strongest batting side in the competition without a coherent attack of our own. Without Anyon and Jordan from last season we will struggle to bowl sides out or to keep their scores within manageable limits; without a permanant quality spinner we lack the variety to compete successfully in a range of conditions; without a stable framework of at least three successful bowlers we can't hope to introduce new players of talent without risking them having to be exposed to bowling long spells in unhelpful conditions or having to fulfil roles that they aren't suited for. Yes, the second innings batting folded meekly, until Wright and Piolet played in contrasting styles and showed a glimpse of whatver is possible. These things happen sometimes and its hard to pinpoint why without going into blame games. If we did, would it be fair to target Joyce after his first innings heroics? Or Cachopa, following his 3 consecutive 50s? We both agree that in different ways Nash and Wells have disappointed this season, and perhaps that is something the coaching staff will need to identify and repair, if they can. As a partnership they haven't really set the world on fire at any time, and yet their performance together this year is not much different than last year, when Nash passed his 1000 and Wells came close. Some of those concerns about points will be resolved between now and when Lancashire come to Hove, particularly the expectations of Lancashire themselves after they have played Yorkshire. We now have the issues of who to pick and who is available: Machan should be back although Scotland play Ireland on both 8th and 10th September so their countries may wish to call on both him and Joyce; Lewis is fit now, perhaps another off the injury list, though not Yardy or Prior. Jordan will probably be in the one-day squad so we can't count on him; Tredwell will presumably be back off to Kent. We might have to have a brave look at our team selection for 9 September.....

Who didn't show up? Nash and Wells, Brown and what did Tredwell offer? Not a lot on the bowling front! 4 from 11! hh, nash & wells close to a 1000 runs between them in the cc? Not each, 100's off.
A shake up of some of these guys is needed. Although who does it, I wouldn't have a clue! Perhaps I should be in charge? (I haven't a clue) A few weeks off for some now? Holiday or should they be working hard up to the next CC game, why they should even go back to play club cricket just for a bat/bowl? I think some, see above, should be told to.
We'll wait and see shall we?

We'll wait and see shall we? Yes, we probably only needed another fifty runs, but more importantly, to occupy the crease for another hour, or at least to have spanned the tea break. Ah well, it's done with now, and as I said, I didn't really expect anything from this game anyway. Tredwell's bowling was as ineffective as most of the others but he does bring a certain tenacity to the side. I wish a few more had his attitude. Hopefully we'll survive, and we can make the changes needed to finally kick on next season. Batting wise, I'm not too worried, we are without Yardy and RHB, and maybe we'll see a bit more of Matt next season. Cachopa looks an excellent signing, and if Machan can recover from this second season syndrome, there should be plenty of competition for places. I don't expect Nash and Wells to repeat this seasons struggles. Bowling wise, this is where we have work to do. If we continue to persist with a four man bowling attack, they all need to take wickets, with at least three of them taking plenty. When Jordan is away, which it seems he will be on a regular basis, there is only Magoffin who can be relied on to take wickets. That's plainly not enough. Either we find a way of playing with five bowlers, or we need to bring in two bowlers who can share the workload with Mags.
