What I wrote was that " As a partnership they haven't really set the world on fire at any time, and yet their performance together this year is not much different than last year, when Nash passed his 1000 and Wells came close. " First -wicket partnerships in 2013 (all Nash and Wells): 27 innings, average 42, 4 100s, 4 50s First-wicket partnerships between Nash and Wells in 2014: 16 innings, average 39, 1 100, 3 50s. Nothing to do with the runs they've scored individually; everything to do with how they operate as a partnership. Poorer than last year, but not by much.

Jonboy - Did you watch the game? I did and I have to say we were better by the best team in the first division who if there is any justice in this word will go on to be county champions. I felt on the final day we needed 300 and we got 230. Where did we lose the game? On the third day with the bowling. They should never have got a lead of 125 and to let them score 235 runs for their last five wickets was a joke. 157 run seventh wicket partnership between Kane Williamson and Tim Bresnan took away the game from Sussex. In the end another 50 runs may have made all the difference. I felt by merely occuping the crease our batsmen were more likely to get out. Tredwell played a dreadful shot in the second innings. The dismissal of Piolet who batted well just before lunch was crucial. Brown needs to start scoring runs as he was a big disappointment in this game with the bat. Hatchett bowled well but with no luck and should have had Williamson out on 16 but instead went on to get a match defining 189. Hobden again impressed. Tredwell was disappointing and in the second innings it looked like they could hit him for six at will off any ball they choose.
HH - I agree with you about the opening partnership. A good opening partnership is the cornerstone to any success. Just look at Yorkshire with Alex Lees (a future England player) and Adam Lyth who are the new Hayden and Langer. The lack of century partnerships this seasons is a big concern. Nash gets too many 30s and at 31 needs to bat properly as he is a senior player but bats irresponsibly more often than not giving his wicket away. Wells looks a shadow of his former self and both his dismissal were due to tentitive decision making.
We need to dust ourselves down and producing a match winning performance against Lancashire.

No, sadly I wasn't able to get to this game but I appreciate the inside info from someone who was there. Maybe I was being a little harsh, as I said, I didn't really expect us to win the game, but we were still very much in it up to that final ball before lunch. Losing Piolet then was a real psychological blow as both him and Wright were going well. We should have still had enough nous on that pitch to at least bat until tea. Another 50 runs and the time that would eat up would probably have secured the draw. No matter, they are probably the best side in the division so it's no disgrace to lose to them on their patch. As you say, we need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down, and make sure we perform against Lancs

Kane Williamson 90*, 74 more than he should have after Tredwell took a clean slip catch which wasn't given after Yorkies voiced their opinion much to Joyce's disgust. The standing umpire Lloyd didn't see whether the catch was clean and so conferred with the square leg umpire Hartley. Williamson even started walking before stopping and coming back. Is this the action of a batsman who thinks he is not out? Hartley gave Bairstow out lbw which was definitely too high. All in all not impressed with the quality of umpiring in this match. That little bit of bad luck, bad umpiring, bad sportsmanship or whatever may have been decisive.
