Good news for Machan means one fewer available for selection: he is to captain Scotland A against New Zealand on the 15th, 17th and 21 August. The Scarborough game is from 15-18 August; incidentally a very far cry from the Sunday starts so far this season, or the Monday starts for our own festival games at Arundel and Horsham.
In the lead-in to the 50 over game against Middlesex we were advised that Anyon, Lewis, Prior, Hamilton-Brown and Yardy were all unfit. Assuming that hasn't changed then, and that Jordan will play again in the Oval Test, or not be released in time, the team now has to be selected from amongst Nash, Wells, Joyce, Cachopa, Wright, Zaidi, Piolet,Brown,Beer, Magoffin, Hatchett, Hobden...and that's about it, unless someone else steps up from the Seconds. It will be a very tough game for us to maintain the form and spirit of the Northants and Warwicks matches.

I think it would be prudent to try and borrow someone again given the amount of absentees. It's important we stay in this division and look to rebuild in the winter. I see Matt Prior is going to have surgery when the season ends, does that indicate that he hopes to play again this season? If not, why wait? Could do with him making himself available to play in this game as a batter only. I suppose it would be ECB's decision really

Why has Machan been allowed to play for Scotland? I see Northants have refused to release Coetzer. Would Machan's development not be better served playing for Sussex?
My XI: Nash, Wells, Joyce (c), Cachopa, Wright, Brown (+), Piolet, Beer, Magoffin, Hatchett, Hobden
Robinson's XI: Nash, Wells, Joyce (c), Cachopa, Wright, Zaidi, Brown (+), Piolet, Magoffin, Hatchett, Hobden

Otherewise the team has to pick itself from what's left, and let's hope that Wright doesn't have a recurrence of injury, otherwise there is another chance for Finch or Jackson - have they been playing for the Seconds today?

Wouldn't like to face Yorkshire with either of those two at six. More likely to be Brown at six, which given his form this season, is at least a place too high

Yardy's bicep injury is taking forever to heal. I've has similar injuries either at work, or in the gym, but I can't ever remember them taking that long to heal Does anyone know if there are complications?

Zaidi ahead of Beer! What has he done to warrant a place? Beer has shown the type of resolve required when batting and that has been at 8 & 9 and picked up wickets. To play Zaidi is just pure lunacy. His performances in 4 day (any) cricket do not justify it. Robinson cannot make a case. If he does and you fall for it then he should stand for election in May. I for one will not!
I thought Tredwell was done and dusted? If not, makes it more interesting. A loan batter is the answer. Or Jordan released, then he can travel up that day. So many options now!

I have to agree with this There is no way Zaidi should be selected in front of Will, if we are planning to go with a spinner. We are a batsman short, and that could be a problem in a game we are unlikely to win, but cannot afford to lose. Losing Wright as a bowler has caused problems with the balance of the side, but we've had a long time to remedy that. That's why a winter move for Will Gidman would have been ideal. Having a front line bowler in your top six enables you to experiment with the rest of your attack. Had Wright not suffered the injury, I'm sure he would have continued with the fourth seamer role, thus offering more opportunities to play an attacking spinner like Will Beer

For what it is worth, Lewis was saying to some fans on Friday he was ready to go and seemed to be fully fit again.

Did the seconds play yesterday? Any of our walking wounded involved?

Did the seconds play yesterday? Any of our walking wounded involved? Yes, Lewis captained them and turned out with very respectable figures, and Hobden's looked good. Beer did not play. Wells (31 no), Zaidi (26 no) and Finch (b 14) were the only others with first-team experience, with Jackson yet to bat. t.co/tvHu67EbDs

Battleaxe - Of course Zaidi will be preferred. Robinson has got to play to justify his decision of signing him in the first place. Beer should play but he won't. We don't need a loan batter. Why have we released Machan to Scotland? He should be playing for Sussex!
Jonboy - Seconds bowled yesterday Hobden (4), Sakande (3), Lewis (2) and Hudson-Prentice took the wickets. Wells, Finch, Jackson and Zaidi also playing. With Salt, Cammish, Haines and Doram making up the side. Gidman's wife wants to move North so a move to Sussex is highly unlikely. More likely to be Durham, Notts, Lancashire or Yorkshire.

Scarborough usually favours spin. Rashid has a good record there so I would suggest Beer should certainly play.

If Lewis is fit, and the match being at Scarborough, maybe a four seamer attack of him, Mags, Hatchett and Hobden. Still leaves that problem position at six with no obvious candidates to fill it, unless we can patch up Mattie Prior
