99-2 at lunch. Very fast scoring as according to bbc scores website on my mobile they only started about 5 minutes ago! Not at all bad having been put in. It looks like a good recovery, after losing the first two wickets for 44. I hope this partnership, and the next will prosper because our batting is thinly stretched. It looks as if Robinson/Joyce (and we all know that Ed picks the team because Robinson keeps telling us) opted for the defensive strategy of playing Piolet rather than Jackson in order to give us a few extra overs of medium pace "containing" bowling. I would rather we had gone for the option of including Jackson as an attacking batsman, reasoning that if we can get the runs then its easier to defend a score rather than bowling tight to play catch-up. We shall see. Meanwhile, good to see CJ has taken 2 so far at the Oval, despite Boycott and Agnew tut-tutting about his run-up and fretting about how quickly England's coaches can change it.

A nice start to Cachopa's first-class career with Sussex, with 50s in his first three innings, and a second consecutive 100 partnership with Joyce - something quite rare for us this season, only the 10th in all. It does like like a very good stand and I will say no more....

Well done to the skipper once again holding things together, it's just a shame the like of Piolet and Brown haven't been able to build on it

Piolet is at best a number 8, we are really struggling for those backup batters with Yardy and RHB injured.

Even Extras have proved unreliable today. At 80 overs only a single leg bye had been conceded!

After my earlier praise of Cachopa cost him his wicket I've been reluctant to post any more today. At 307-6 with Tredwell seemingly going well partnering Joyce and 3 points up I'd have been tempted to say we had the best of the day and tomorrow morning to make a little hay, but the last few overs have tilted it back to Yorkshire.
There will be a lot of work for the bowlers tomorrow, and much will depend on whether they can make early inroads. It's a strong batting order throughout, but particularly with Lyth in tremendous form this year and all of the top 5 averaging 40 or more we really need to make everything count, not least catches.

A bizarre review by Jon Culley of the first day's play on Cricinfo ( Joyce leaves Yorkshire in a fight) suggests that Sussex have a remote chance of winning the Championship and contrasts this with Yorkshire's slender points lead over Notts! Technically, I suppose it's possible, but I'm sure most readers of this board would settle for a secure place around 5th or 6th , and would probably consider that just given the loss of players, the thinness of our bowling and the alarming vagaries of form some of our batsmen have shown. Still its nice to read a view that suggests we have the upper hand in this game. I would still think that we have to bowl well to get any kind of lead over Yorkshire's batsmnen, even if they did put us in. I have seen Sussex play at Scarborough before, and it seems to be a pitch with plenty of runs in it. Once again, we are indebted to Joyce, and to lesser but worthy supports from Wright and Cachopa, who seems to have ridden his luck well, having been put down at 5. A shame once again that the curse of the middle order continues and Brown has shown no consistency at all this year.

Is it time to give young Jackson a go behind the stumps?

Is it time to give young Jackson a go behind the stumps? Not going to happen with Brown having just been given his county cap. i was a little surprised he was given it at Horsham. If you were going to give this season the obvious time was after his innings of 163 against Durham.

For all the potential Brown has he seems to consistenly under achieve for me. He had the chance to kick on and be a real England contender given early promise but he can never seem to have a consistent run of scores in 4 day or 1 day cricket. His keeping has improved considerably since coming into the side but I wonder how Jackson will ever improve without first team cricket lets not forget he was also an England Under 19 wicket keeper as was Brown.

I suppose, although his batting may not have kicked on, it's probably satisfactory for someone who bats at seven. It's annoying because he has the potential to be able to bat higher than this. The last couple of times I've seen him, I didn't think his keeping was up to his usual standards, including bizarrely, the game at Horsham where he took six catches in an innings.
