The lesson of Overton's racist abuse of Zaidi to other cricketers who find themselves on an ECB charge is deny everything and plead not guilty. Andrew Gale admitted his racist abuse of Ashwell Prince, accepted the evidence against him and pleaded guilty. Overton denied the charge, implied that those giving evidence against him (Yardy and Wharf) were liars and pleaded not guilty.
Gale got the heaviest punishment for which the ECB rules provide. Overton got off with the lightest minimum punishment.
Figure that one out.
Coming on top of the Chris Cairns trial, it is not a good advert for truth and honesty in cricket.

Given that he has got off so lightly from the ECB, there is nothing to stop Somerset imposing their own punishment on the player.
I'd call on all Somerset supporters to lobby their club to ban him for the season and send him on an anti-racism course. I shall go on the cricinfo link above and do so.

Yesterday this thread was locked because of a series of posts between two members which in my opinion breached the draft statement in our Rules: Rudeness, insulting others, personal attacks, threats or inflammatory posts should not be tolerated
Perhaps the Rules need revising, and I will do so, but they also contain a statement that I have found personally effective to think about when I have read something that riles me, and it usually makes me delete my quick response before posting: If you see a thread that you don’t like, because you don’t think its worthy of the board or it covers a topic or person that you personally object to, then either don’t continue reading the thread or report it to the Moderators if you think it is obscene, libellous or contravenes some other rule adopted by the community.
This thread is now open to discuss all matters concerning Ashar Zaidi including the recent reports of the derogatory and insulting comments by Craig Overton. When certain people want to insult you or get under your skin, they go for the lowest blow, they identify whatever makes you stand out from the crowd and use it. This could be your height, age, weight, hair colour, facial features, skin colour etc etc. I'm afraid it's part of human nature. I'm not saying that it's right but don't understand why racism is any worse than ageism or sexism for example. I don't think as much passion would have been aroused if Overton had shouted " get off the pitch you fat b****** " although I think it's just as insulting.

Is obesity abuse illegal - I don't think so.

And how do you describe the relentless abuse of talented spin bowlers at the club? Now I know it's post-hoc rationalisation but why deploy Dockrell, Burgoyne and Nuits Saint Georges when Beer and Zaidi were available?

Do you not see that there is a fundamental difference between saying ' get off the pitch because I don't like your fatness' and saying 'get out of my country, this is a white culture and and you don't belong here because you are the wrong colour and black people only belong in black countries'? What if Slimeball Overton had shouted "we're setting up a fat ghetto somewhere far, far away and you and all the other obsese people can eff off to fat land and not pollute our country, which is only for thin people"?

Robinson totally lost the plot over the last couple of seasons and made some utterly bizarre and irrational decisions - as people often do when they are in post for too long, become unchallengable within the organisation and start to believe their own propaganda (and the hubris is heightened when you have a fawning claque of a*r*s*elickers around you like the Inner Circle). Good luck to the England women. Unless Robinson changes his ways, they are going to need it!

What I'm saying is that it was an insult, an unpleasant one, but it just came out in the heat of the moment because he obviously thought Ashar to be a threat to him in the context of the game and wanted to get back at him. I don't condone the comment but I can understand that to Overton it would be just another sledge. Ashar didn't rise to it and gave it the distain it deserved.

Pressure growing on ECB to revisit this one and hand out a more approproiate punishment: www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/dec/11/kick-it-out-herman-ouseley-cricket-craig-overton-ecbMy gut feeling is that having covered it up for threee months, the pressure is now mounting to the point where the ECB will not be able to hold the line and I don't think the racist can get away with the mild slap on the wrist which has been administered(and which is actually more to do with two previous offences than his Trump-like outburst against Zaidi, in any case). But I still say Somerset could nip it in the bud by announcing if not a season-long ban, at least a suspension for the first month of the domestic season.

First isn't calling all the inner circle a gratuitous and generalizing insult worthy of a level one punishment.? second you have made some real assumptions there about Mark Robinson to draw your own conclusion.is it not possible the selection of the final eleven has been down to the skipper.? Who do you think it was who didn't fancy Z and wanted Dockrell?

Mr Z does it again. This morning he came to the wicket in the 16th over and smashed 40 not out from 15 balls at a strike rate of 266.66. Victorians scored 56 in the last four overs and Zaidi hit 40 of them.
His Boy's Own Tournament record to date:
239 runs at an avge of 74 and a strike rate of 154.
12 wkts at an average of 11 and an economy rate of 4.8.
Straying off topic, but an interesting theory from Wally that all those terrible loan players were down to Joyce not Robinson...one can certainly see that the Irish connection may have played a part in Dockrell.
But the telling thing is that none of the players Sussex loaned last season - Linley, Wainwright, Dockrell and Burgoyne - looks likely to be playing county cricket next season. One has retired and the other three were all sakced by their counties at the end of the season.
If Wally is right and they were recruited by Joyce, why did the Professional Cricket Manager not put his foot down and say, 'no, they're no better, and arguably a lot worse, than what we've got?'

I suspect this was all part of the total muddle the club got itself into this year. Maybe Robinson lost the plot, maybe Luke said "enough's enough", and maybe Robinson was encouraged to develop his career elsewhere.

Are we sure this BPL is for real and is not a fantasy league in whuich someone makes up fictional stats for a sub-continent syndicate to bet on?
According to cricinfo, Zaidi has just taken 4 for 11 from his four overs.
His revised tournament bowling stats: 16 wkts at an avge of 9.4 with an economy rate of 4.5!

How excessively presumptuous. Maybe he just doesn't like Kolpaks. Ban him for a year? Get a grip.
To answer your question FB, after the initial gagging from a very busy moderator, it's no big deal. I'd have told young Overton that I'm going back to my own country once I'm bored of nailing his mum. Credit to Zaidi for not giving a s**t.
The biggest issue in this is the inconsistency of punishment thing, for me.
For the record, Mr Mod, no posts were offensive or rude, or whatever you listed on your puny list. Borderman was typically righteous and condemning, and I was typically, RFawden. Who cares?
