Few Sussex supporters would have put money on Sussex being top of the Group 3 County Championship table after two games. Having claimed maximum points against Glamorgan, the next opposition comes in the shape of Yorkshire, a tough prospect. Like Sussex, Yorkshire have started the season with a win and a comfortable draw. Last week, they won convincingly at Canterbury by 200 runs, although in their first game they struggled to bowl out Glamorgan and had to settle for a draw.
Adam Lyth comes to Hove as the leading run scorer in the County Championship having scored two centuries, 97 and 52 in his four innings this season. Joe Root is also set to play, which makes it yet another challenge for the in-form Ollie Robinson and the other bowlers to take on. David Willey, having missed the Glamorgan game, took five Kent second innings wickets to see his team over the line comfortably against Kent last week, but against Glamorgan, Yorkshire struggled to take wickets.
It's over five years since Sussex faced Yorkshire in a red-ball match. The historical records show that Yorkshire have more than twice as many of the encounters as Sussex, but this game will be a good measure of how far Sussex have progressed. The last encounter between the two sides was at Headingley; it ended in a disappointing defeat by 100 runs in a game which Yorkshire's totals of 251 and 305 proved to be enough. Mike Yardy was the top Sussex scorer with 70 in that game.
Will Sussex still be on top of Group 3 on Sunday evening? We are just going to have to wait and see, I guess.
Other games in our group this week:
Kent v Lancashire at Canterbury Northamptonshire v Glamorgan at Northampton

The obvious concern will be the loss of Ollie to England and the New Zealand Tests on June 2nd-6th and 10th to 14th. The Kiwi players have had their jabs, so unless something extraordinary occurs, the series should go ahead. The positive aspect being, Robinson could remain with Sussex until mid-May time, so just perhaps, the seamer may play for the next four BWT games (Yorkshire, Lancashire, Northants and Kent). This also means we 'may' only lose him for two matches (Northants (h) and Yorkshire (a)). Who knows? Below is a link to an ongoing Cricketer Magazine site covering the Yorkshire match. www.thecricketer.com/Topics/countycricket/county_championship_essentials_2021_sussex_v_yorkshire_match_preview.html

Hi Sussex Friends Kent Member here in peace. I watched most of the Kent V Yorkshire(school holidays!). Your lads will certainly have to be at their best as Yorkshire look the team to beat in this group. Our bowling was wayward on the first morning. Our batting was not great and yet again Stevo got us out of a hole again. Anyway I hope you have more success than our boys. We have to try to tame Lancashire at Canterbury. Really galling that we have played Yorkshire with root in the side and then this week Lancs with Jimmy Anderson and we cannot go to see them live. Am now picking my way through how I san hopefully watch Kent when crowds are allowed in. Have had to apply to a ballot as a member to get tickets. How are Sussex organising distribution of tkts to matches? Will not be able to come to Hove this season as there is no Reciprocal in place. Ah well will have to wait to go to Sussex by the Sea until 2022!

Trouble is if Robinson gets injured or has a bad spell or two which all bowlers will have their is certainly lack of wicket taking bowlers in the Sussex ranks one or two of them need to step up Robinson can’t do it all on his own

Claydon for Meaker in the squad. Didn't see that coming. Maybe there's going to be a rotation between these two.

Claydon was ruled out of the first 2 games because of his ban for cheating. My guess is he would have played ahead of Meaker if he’d been available.
My feelings are that he shouldn’t be anywhere near the squad, the club or the country for that matter.

I couldn’t agree more Sussex should have got rid last year when he cheated no room in the game for people like that

It doesn't reflect well on the hierarchy. Maybe Brown, Greenfield and Andrew should all have fallen on their swords. There is no room for cheating in our great game.

Most have performed well or better than expected so far, but this is a tough one. Lets hope that Robinson gets more support this time. Ultimately, we can only do our best and hope that our bowling line up is getting experience. We are on something of a roll, so hope I'm wrong and we 'give it some of that'.

They did more sweeping than a Scottish curler at the winter Olympics. I don't believe for one second that only one person was involved in Claydon's cheating ways, there never is. I hope he isn't picked and I'm disgusted he's still at the club. Shame on you Sussex.

Well, a potentially interesting day tomorrow. A tough game awaits. A good performance would really signal a different mentality this season. Given that Yorkshire walloped Kent, I suspect they will prove to be too strong but fingers crossed.
