Play the championship in June - August and put the joke baseball competitions in April, May and September. Micky Mouse cricket produces Micky Mouse cricketers! If you want to produce test cricket you have to play the championship matches at the height of the summer. ECB have caused this through the joke scheduling of the cricket season.

And some people think Sussex are poor! Not as bad as England. India, New Zealand and Australia all successfully play red and white ball cricket without a problem.

It's the same ol', same ol' story repeated over and over again.
If England are roundly beaten in the Ashes, the same arguments and reasons are thrust forward as if these are the solutions. They are not.
Playing plenty of International short format cricket brings in the money, so the Tests can be financed and go ahead. And England have done pretty well in recent years winning the 50 over World Cup and reaching the semis of the T20 World Cup. Therefore, that is not a sound argument.
Unlike Australia, England cannot find a balanced team between the long and short formats. A majority of the new batsmen emerging are geared up for the shorter form and only a minority for Test cricket. The shorter format is where the money lies, so you can't blame them.
Test cricket is a dying game, for apart from Australia and India, what other Test team playing England fills the English TMGs? And as for other countries, far less so. The younger people today are only really interested in watching the Ashes, while the mainstream media are only interested in covering the Ashes. That's it.
International cricket today is a balancing act and when you throw in Covid and lack of match practice, this only pushes England to fall off the tightrope as they have done in the present Ashes series.
Agreed, it is an embarrassing spectacle, but history shows England have been here many times before.

And some people think Sussex are poor! Not as bad as England. India, New Zealand and Australia all successfully play red and white ball cricket without a problem. The two are a mirror image. Our leaders and the ECB have shunted the longer form aside for money and it's predictably resulted in two of the worst longer form sides we've ever seen. It's no coincidence and people have been saying this will happen to both sides for several years. Deeply ingrained issues, particularly with England. Personally, I think this is close to the end of test cricket in England, and therefore probably the world. Sounds extreme but we live in an extreme world unfortunately. The new gen want T20 stuff and the suits in charge want money. Changing captain and coach might help a bit but no leaders can make a top three out of what we have. 30-3 time and time again. Feel for Root, despite thinking he's a moron of a captain. Silverwood's a fool, that's what I get from him. I wonder if India, NZ and Aus have disregarded their domestic long form comp like we have?

Time for all the ECB management to be sacked on the grounds of incompetence. They have turned English cricket into a joke. What illustrates just how incompetent they are is that they cannot even produce a set of county cricket fixtures which even a the most incompetent person on the planet could manage.
Why are the ECB paying Tom Harrison a £2.1m bonus? After this latest epic failure he should made to pay back his bonus. He got it for implementing the Hundred! He should have been hit over the head with a cricket 2.1m times for coming up with such a stupid competition. Look what it has produced in Australia! Joke cricket will produce joke cricketers!

Incompetence won't wash cos they planned it CP. This is the direction, just like at Sussex, and eventually everywhere I think.
Financial greed is ruining the game for traditionalists. Mind you financial greed has ruined GB over the last 15 years, irreversibly, so it's perfectly in-keeping with society.
If they shortened all comps they could make it work, and importantly play plenty of Championship games over June/July/August. It won't happen though.

The Championship needs to change to survive I think. I don't like KP's franchise idea, not necessary, but I do like his condensing idea. Much shorter tournaments needed throughout formats, gotta move with the times. They could make plenty of room by playing T20 stuff every other day too. No need for the longer breaks in between, it's only 40 overs a day - they do 90 overs five days consecutively in tests.
As someone says in that article, there's really only room for two short form comps. Money and greed all day long.

In The Times today Elisabeth Ammon remarks that “.......Silverwood will either walk or be pushed after the Ashes, but Giles is also at risk, having presided over the decisions to a) appoint Silverwood b) remove the role of head selector and c) agree to an Ashes tour with no preparation or warm up matches”. One might add “d) appointing Silverwood head selector”. Giles “at risk”?? Are we, as always, to see the poor over promoted subordinate take the bullet for his superiors, or is Giles man enough to accept responsibility for his decisions and walk too?

One body running three different sports - red ball, 50-over and T20 - not to mention The Hundred. It needs at least two organisations to run these two sports; there is then more chance of cooperation. I don't know if the current Test team debacle will mean a lurch back towards red ball cricket, but it's hard to imagine with the ECB knee-deep in The Hundred mire. I don't see any way you can keep the two camps happy (red ball v white ball) as things stand, let alone a Test side. The only thing keeping red ball cricket going is the crowds who are willing to pay inflated prices for Test matches at Lord's and the like. If the Test team becomes so poor and the public turn their back on Test cricket, it's T20, T10, T5 and T1 in the future.

Hopefully tonight's showing will resemble some sort of competition, like the excellent game going on in SA at the moment. For anyone who likes proper test cricket, watch that. I'll watch an hour or so of tonight's game before I visit Mr Twinkles in Tinsel Town to dream about murder and stuff. That should see England to about 50-4.

Tiptoes posts about cricket, rather than a rumble Stan & Pete got dragged into in ex Prime Minister John Major's garden during a party for Peggy Mitchell. Wonder will never cease indeed.
This is unlike me but I have a gripe about Root's captaincy. In what world does a captain bowl himself one end and Malan the other when the Aussies are 280-6, Kwaja approaching a ton, 30 minutes before tea and the 2nd new ball just 20 overs old?
Believe it or not, Australia were 320-6 at tea and a man who Root dropped on 30 had his ton. Root's a moron. A great player but a moron. He must be replaced.

Moron is the standard over the top insult from you Tommy. I think he will resign as captain and i think Silverwood will do the same.
