I find it inconceivable that anyone could defend the management decisions of the past couple of years. Our red ball team, as evidenced by our ranking of 18th out of 18, has deteriorated hugely under Keith Greenfield’s watch, and now the T20 squad is heading the same way. No wonder Luke Wright chose not to captain the side again this season - he was very critical last autumn of the county’s inability to recruit and to retain existing star players. Since he made those comments things have actually got worse, not better, because we lost Ben Brown. And as others have commented, it feels unlikely that Archer and Robinson will be with us for much longer. From our peak T20 side of, say, 2019, we have lost Salt, Jordan, Briggs, Evans, Wiese (the latter because of the end of Kolpak players, rather than Sussex management incompetence)

Interview with Phil Salt in tomorrow’s Times, which concludes “Everything’s about winning at Lancashire. I’m delighted to be here”.

How would this team do? Salt Wells Van Zyll Brown Evans Burgess Wiese Jordan Briggs Archer Robinson Last 2 included on the basis that they probably will not play any more 4 day cricket for Sussex. Who have I forgotten in terms of released players over past couple of years? This team highlights the problem: Salt - not a great opener in CC, Haines is better Wells - had a poor run with us Van Zyl - had a poor last season but would probably have improved; Pujara seems better Brown - bad loss Evans - not a CC player Burgess - should have kept in both senses Wiese - Kolpak/past his best for CC Jordan - rarely available Briggs - Carson compares favourably Robinson - now an England player Archer - now an England player/permanently injured This shows the CC had to be dismantled and performed poorly after Joyce left. The question is whether we could have bought our way out of trouble caused by a mix of under performers, those past their best and England calls.

Nah it shows your ignorance to the job he holds. If you had half a nut about you'd realise that Therealab1 - Grubby is the director of cricket, he’s responsible for our current position One question for you, in his 6 years in this role has the first team squad at Sussex improved or got worse? Wrong again!

No one wants to lose games of cricket but finger pointing and shouting makes no sense to me.

I think therealab1 did not quite get my post. Apologies for not being clear. I was reflecting on those who are no longer available and how such a team might have looked

I fearfor Tom Haines sanity, and the supporters. Struggling to find anything to be optimistic about. I feel sorry for friends who've travelled to Worcester to sit in the cold through this dire performance On the plus side it is a beautiful ground

There is no crowd to follow. Only passionate Sussex supporters dismayed at the poor decision making of the club management in the past few seasons, and the unacceptably poor results on the field that have followed as a direct consequence of many of those decisions. They look like poor decisions but contracts were offered to ALL of those players except Wells. We are hamstrung by budgets. Well, the finances are not going to improve if we keep losing by an innings, it puts people off watching and for those that do turn up cuts the number of playing days so reduces catering and shop income. Truly Sussex needs to speculate to accumulate now, unless it wants to carry on coming 18th every year.

Wrong again! I genuinely want to know what’s wrong about the above please? His job title on the website is director of cricket. So if the director of cricket isn’t responsible than who is? And please can you answer my question! Thanks in advance!

He isnt Director Of Cricket, he is Performance Director which covers the entirity of Sussex Cricket not just the mens CC 1st XI. I've answered this question before, the circumstances have changed immensely in the 6 years he has been in the role so i'll only judge from the 5 year plan implemented last year and the answer is yes our squad has improved. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RZCmkPKgvwMight be worth watching for people who don't understand his role. The women are thriving, the pathway has produced a lot of pro's. Yes the 1st XI in red ball cricket is struggling but when they're back on their feet injury wise i think youll see a marked improvement.

You said it yourself Gordy, the pathway is producing a lot of pros and the 1st team are struggling. There's an equation to be had there - they are throwing them in too early. Often with no seconds experience and barely out of shorts. I'm a huge supporter of youth progression but it has to be that, not just throwing them in all at once at the deep end.
What is your affiliation with Greenfield? Come on? It's all over ya. Family member? drinking buddy? Lover? You can tell me, I'm the only one who actually reads this board.
