A welcome return to form for Luke Wells at Blackstone this morning as he hits 178 not out. Fifty for Zaidi also

Sussex triumph by 66 runs. Zaidi follows up his second innings 55 with bowling figures of 5-35. So from this match, only Wells, Zaidi and perhaps Hatchett are pushing for a first team place next week

Well on this occasion, he has outperformed Beer with both ball and bat. Unless we can call on Jordan, we may struggle to put out any meaningful attack. None of the senior seamers, Lewis, Liddle or Anyon, have pushed their claims in recent games at this level. The best two have been Hobden and Hatchett, and both those two must start along with Magoffin. Who else should play is anybody's guess, none really warrant selection. Batting wise both Yardy and Zaidi made a ton in the previous game, so maybe the latter is starting to show some form at long last. I know it won't be a popular call, but I'd err on the side of caution for the Lancs game. I wouldn't want to go into this game all gung-Ho with a weakened attack, quite frankly we don't need to. If Lancashire fail to win that one, it will be very difficult for them to avoid the drop.

With the greatest of respect Zaidi hasn't been able to transfer those performances into the first team. It is a shame Hobden is injured. Hopefully Jordan will be available. Hopefully Yardy will replace Piolet with Joyce, Cachopa and Wright moving down one batting position. Pleased to see Luke Wells score runs as he looked horribly out of form at Scarborough.

And 9.43 for the firsts.. That is very true this season...his first class record from his Pakistan days are also very good...quite why he hasn't been able to step up in the way cachopa has I have no idea...and how useful his bowling is I also don't really know.whether he gets another chance, or Beer does or we have tredwell next week I wish all of them very good luck indeed.we live in hope.

Well with Hobden injured, at least two of the attack will not be selected on merit. Ditto the batting, Yardy should get a recall but six and seven, whoever they are, will be wretchedly out of form.

I'd play Tredwell & Beer plus 3 seamers. It's been dry, the wicket should be too. I'd expect some turn. Both these 2 can bat and with Yardy returning I see this as a chance to play some positive cricket. Lets hope we have a wicket that allows this.
Zaidi has had too many chances in all formats and has failed. The only reason I can see him selected is for Robinson trying to justify his signing. I hope Robinson is managerial in his decision making and selects and team on merit, balance and with a chance to win.

Zaidi has had too many chances in all formats and has failed. The only reason I can see him selected is for Robinson trying to justify his signing. I hope Robinson is managerial in his decision making and selects and team on merit, balance and with a chance to win. If Tredders is made available I feel sure he will play ....but given the rumours about his contract I am not sure this is certain. a batting line up of 6 brown7 Tredders 8 Beer doesn't seem all that balanced to me. dropping cachopa seems harsh if you play brown at six to accommodate the two spinners and Yardy at three. zaidi played six early season championship games before being dropped...in t20 he bowled six overs and batted four times in five games and he played one 50 over game. This is hardly too many chances in every format. Particularly when you consider his career record and his recent performances in the second eleven. He ( not Beer ) was the match winner this week. So in picking the team on merit I think you are perhaps being a little subjective on what constitutes merit. it may indeed be a difficult task picking the team which may depend on availability, balance, conditions as well as merit. It is my understanding from Mark Robinson that at Sussex the final decision is left to the captain . I am assuming that Joyce is closer to the issues and better qualified than me to pick the team and I wish him luck.whoever gets the nod I wish them all the luck in the world and hope Sussex win. But I doubt any selection is to justify Robinsons signings. Jon Lewis has been fit and available for selection for a few weeks ( according to him at blackstone) but not selected. But the selection is really not as simple as some suggest. it has been a desperately poor season when it comes to injuries and form with so many players not meeting expectations. Let's hope we can finish the season on a high.i also hope recent centuries in the seconds for Wells, Yardy and Zaidi are evidence of a return to form if they are in the firsts. Perhaps Nash also needed some practice. Brown and Machan continue to disappoint and yet they certainly have the talent.

What did Zaidi do in the CC? Nothing. What did he do in the T20? Nothing. What did he do in his only game in the 50 over comp? Nothing. Beer played one cc game, got 30 odd batting, hardly bowled in a low scoring Sussex game, T20, match wnner or near, wicket taker? Yes. 50 over, match winner and wicket taker? Yes. Contribution.
I'm pro Beer and our own. Forget what Zaidi did in the 2nd team, in the 1st team he's failed. He is IMO out of his depth. The game the 2nds needed him to show some ability, Lancs in the semi at Horsham, he failed with the bat. Ideal opportunity to contribute. Sorry, not good enough.

I see Joe Gatting has hit a century on his return to Sussex. Currently playing for a combined Hampshie/Surrey side against Sussex seconds at Horsham, Joe top scored with 117

Big defeat for the seconds in this one The only notable performance came from Hudson-Prentice with his hundred in the first innings, and a maiden 50 from young Tom Haines in the second
