I'd play Tredwell & Beer plus 3 seamers. It's been dry, the wicket should be too. I'd expect some turn. Both these 2 can bat and with Yardy returning I see this as a chance to play some positive cricket. Lets hope we have a wicket that allows this. Zaidi has had too many chances in all formats and has failed. The only reason I can see him selected is for Robinson trying to justify his signing. I hope Robinson is managerial in his decision making and selects and team on merit, balance and with a chance to win. And now?

Big defeat for the seconds in this one The only notable performance came from Hudson-Prentice with his hundred in the first innings, and a maiden 50 from young Tom Haines in the second Two excellent young prospects.

Is Zaidi going to be fit for the next game having gone off with an injured wrist. According to Steve Hollis, yes: Stephen Hollis stevehollis75 ยท Sep 12 Injury update. Ashar Zaidi sprained his spinning finger fielding a Buttler drive but should be okay for @sussexccc trip to Notts on Monday

Have to mention a second consecutive unbeaten century for the seconds for young Hudson-Prentice. Contracts have been awarded for much less

If he can maintain and improve his bowling as well he could have a very good chance. Perhaps we should play him in the final game and give him a good work out.

He was probably on course for an academy plus contract, but his performances of late might have elevated him to a full on county contract. A lot will depend on what sort of budget there is available Our first priority has to be a quality strike bowler. If we have to reduce the size of the squad to get one in, then the lad may have to wait until the following year. It's been a while since we've seen such promise from one so young though.

There probably won't be much money available next season, less than for this year, given that the T20 attendances haven't been the golden goose the ECB promised and the county's marketing ideas seem to go no further than organising tea parties at a tenner a head. In those circumstances we may be forced to do the thing that Robinson seems to dread and to bring on the younger players at every opportunity, filling gaps caused by injury and international selection not with bought-in bits and pices players but with a policy of developing youth. Some of them won't come off and we may have to be prepared for some hard times to come, but we can't rely on the chance of a Jordan or a Cachopa coming up each time we rub the magic lamp offseason.

Well I hope that isn't the case. I would hate to think we've had to put urgent recruitment on hold because we've handed out too long contracts to players who are unlikely to contribute for the first eleven in any meaningful way. We have to bring the youth through quicker, but as far as our immediate needs go, there's really no one in the pipeline. We need to get better value out of our squad.

The other thing of course, more of the same, or worse, in the one day competitions next season, and the crowds will dwindle still further. Do we really need a squad of 22, or could we cut it down to say, 20?

We have some excellent players but witin a couple of years Joyce and Yardy will be feeling their age and strains and minor injuries will tell. We need to provide against that. To find and retain an all-rounder capable of contributing to batting and bowling, even if not a prolific stroke bowler. To add to the seam attack - will Anyon be fit next year and able to resume at his best? What cover do we have for Jordan? What continuity plan is there for a successor to Magoffin in the next year or two? To find and integrate a quality spinbowler, capable of bowling long containing spells as well as exploiting drier wickets in the Championship, as well as supplying a winning option in T20 games. If we can't trust our youth development to help with some of these objectives then what on earth are we funding it for?

If we can't trust our youth development to help with some of these objectives then what on earth are we funding it for? No I'm with you on that, but what other players are there, currently not on the staff, who are worthy of a full contract? Hudson-Prentice is definitely one to consider, and I have high hopes for the likes of Haines, Cammish, Doram and Garton, but the truth is, they're not quite ready yet. As for our current needs, with Cachopa added, and Prior available again, I'm satisfied that our batting is in good hands, both now and in the immediate future. A decent all rounder will be hard to find, there aren't many around. We may have to wait until we can address that situation, in the short term at least, with an OS all rounder. Hopefully Hudson-Prentice could be the long term solution. The two priority positions have to be, a seamer to replace Chris Jordan, and a spinner who, as you say, can bowl long spells and tie up one end. I'm optimistic that we are only those two players of being a side that can challenge on all fronts again.

I agree with the five youngsters you mention. Hudson-Prentice deserves to be given a contract now not next season. The reality is we do need a seamer and a spinner but whether the right player becomes available this winter or next winter remains to be seen. What we mustn't do is settle for second, third or fourth best and make a panic signing after all that is exactly how we got into this mess.

A return to some kind of form for Matt Machan with a century in yesterday's defeat by Durham Another fifty also by Hudson-Prentice
