Very much the story of our Championship season, great start, the opposition on the ropes, but yet again unable to press home the advantage.
A couple of dropped catches, a couple of Umpire decisions that on another day could have gone in our favour, but haven't looked like getting a wicket since lunch.
Yes, I know the ball goes soft after 35 overs, but other teams seem to find a way.
Struggling to understand why Lenham gets a game, given the reluctance to bowl him.

The thing is Wicked Wicket, both Archer & Machan were fine when they had young bodies. They had problems at about 25. What's that about?
Anyone under 26 is young to me. Perhaps, you like 'em younger?
Machan was 24 years-old when he first got his wrist problem, similar to what RHB suffered from and why he retired early too. Jofra was of a similar age. One forgets he's been injured with one complaint or another for close on three years now and may never gain full fitness again. One prays he does. He turned 27 years-old in April, so if he does, he's only got 5 years left as a top fast bowler, if fully fit.
What a waste of a spectacular talent.
Stuart Whittingham after leaving Sussex for Glos, gave up cricket due to a back injury. Will Sheffield, as a Sussex minnow, ended a promising career with a similar long term affliction. Jack Carson has been out all season. What's happened to Joe Sarro? Then, all the young bowlers have suffered from consistent injuries and niggles: Whether it is Crocombe, Atkins, Hunt, FHP, Ibrahim or Garton alongside the older Robinson.
It is interesting watching Matty Potts bowling for England. He has the right physique required for a fast bowler. He reminds one of a young Fred Trueman. If you don't have that physical presence, injuries will come knocking. Too many soy boys these days from the younger generation.
You reach the early to mid 20s and the body starts groaning from the regular previous years of professional physical pounding and then gives up the ghost. Not forgetting the psychological/mental side too. One suspects Archer being thrust into the world's media limelight after his 2019 World Cup success, would not have helped. Some deal with fame, others do not. His was rapid and meteoric, enough to frighten even the most egotistical. Physical injury can be an expression of the emotions.

What, Machan needed to grow into his wrist? Listen dum-dum, you grow into your body through adolescence and into your early 20s. The only thing growing after 25 is your hands and ears. That's a fact of anatomy, and not whimsical nonsense like what you're speaking.
This is a featherbed. Our groundsman is killing us. Like all spinners, the L-man will come into play 2nd innings. If they have a 2nd innings.

Who would have thought it? Absolutely everybody. There's no excuse for not signing an OS quick this last month. Especially when you consider we signed old man Brooks instead.
Being ground down to nothing.

With Madsen on 171* and number 9 Hayden Kerr averaging 38.4 in first class cricket having scored 62* on debut at number 8 and having a highest score of 88 bating at number 7 for New South Wales this winter. It could be a long day tomorrow.
Brooks has been an absolute waste of time signing. Why is Crocombe not playing after taking four wickets in the last game?
Carter and Tear need to be the two Sussex wicketkeepers next season.

Only day 1. Good 1st session. Session 2 and 3 to Derbyshire. Really unlucky with LBW on Madson not given out. Absolute out out out. 2 dropped catches off Haines; one cost us runs. That happens. Haines had a really grumpy attitude. Don't mind him being competitive, that is spot on. But remember he is Captain and needs to lift players; not act like Mr Angry. Agree with LQ, we need a quality bowler. Good effort from team. Looking forward to day 2. Harmes keeps harping on about our record. Yet he fails to say that Robinson won us our last game in April 2021. Where is he now?

They're on the ropes now.
Maybe he's angry at skippering a team that can't win. Or that hasn't signed an OS quick. Or that keeps producing roads. Or that a free scoring lions player can't get in a s##t T20 side. He ain't the only one, Brown was angry, Wright too I reckon. Hopefully an angry bat is a good bat cos as usual we're battling scoreboard pressure as well as a bowling attack later.

I haven’t contributed for ages. Years, in fact. Before the covid scam. I only rejoined the club by default - I forgot to cancel the DD. I didn’t come at all last year as I wasn’t willing to subject myself to all the rules, regulations and restrictions that the club so assiduously applied. Every nuance in the ‘advice’ applied, enhanced, and gold-plated. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could apply their obviously agile minds to actually running a cricket club - y’know - with a team of fit players motivated to win rather than make up the numbers for the visitors to practice on?
I was coming today to watch the Derby’s match, but yesterday’s progress sent me in the direction of Beachy Head instead.
I’ve been supporting this club in person for over 20 years now. The glory days of Grizzly and successive championships seem a universe away.
What are we for now? Recruiting a team from Exchange & Mart, changing every Thursday? No leadership. Grey men making decisions behind closed doors. The only visible progress being made is on the real estate front.
There is something fundamentally wrong with the management if it fails to run the club in a manner that inspires loyalty in the members to a coherent team who appear to have a plan. There is something fundamentally wrong with the training set up if it fails to produce a fit group of players from in-house, who are actually motivated. It must be demoralising beyond belief trying to represent Sussex at the moment. Was it a very unfortunate set of circumstances which combined to deal the club an unplayable hand? Well, our ex-players - you know, the ones we knew and loved through thick and thin - they knew there was something up and legged it for pastures new and verdant. Who can blame them? Their playing life is too short for the Sussex ‘plan’ - if any.
I have no idea who the power brokers behind the club really are these days. I just hope they’re not in the real estate business themselves. I sometimes wonder.

Adrian Harms comments, 'This is starting to become embarrassing'. I rather feel that ship has sailed Adrian.
Derbyshire sail past 500, even their number 10 is running down the wicket and picking up runs with ease. It really feels the only way we can make it any easier for them is if we start bowling underarm.
We look as though we have no idea or plan on how to get these final two wickets. Any takers for 600?
No plan, no idea, no clue, no hope!!
The only question is whether our batters can get sufficient runs to avoid the follow on and in so doing secure a draw.
Apologies, the second and bigger question is why am I wasting time putting myself through the pain of watching this latest in a long line of poor performances?
How much more of this as supporters do we have to endure?
Apparently, Finn organising the field. Has our captain called it a day mid-match?
Sorry that was four questions.

So, once again a Sussex team that is unable to bowl out an opposition is now staring down the barrell before tea on day 2. This bowling attack is predictably unable to bowl out the opposition. Why do we keep preparing roads at Hove ? Another defeat is now looking inevitable . I also couldnt face travItselling from Chichester to watch us being put to the sword by the Mighty Derbyshire (no offence meant) We are verging on Minor County status the way our record continues to decline match by match . The question is when will Sussex ever win a County Championship match again - 2023 ? 2024 ? It really is so sad to watch how uncompetitive this club is becoming. Management remain untouchable , no one seems to be held accountable - we just sweep away the malaise by saying its a long term plan. Sorry -but something needs to change- the culture - the management - Too many poor signings - Finn is an example of an ageing player (aka Meaker/Claydon) who Sussex were willing to offer a lucrative contract for little return. The youngsters are now used to losing every single match - I have followed this club for nearly forty years and whilst wanting to buy into the Plan- can see just continued decline. Its just beyond belief how low we really are now ...

Derbyshire finally take pity on us and put us out of our misery by declaring at a mere 551 for 8.
A ninth wicket partnership of 108 in 117 balls. I don't care if it is a road Liquid, that is inexcusable. Not only did it look as though we had no idea, it looked as if we had given up.
Finn appeared to have taken over the captaincy towards the end of their innings. Adrian Harms off to make enquiries.

I did something today that I have’t done all season, I switched off the cricket.
Im just tired of the same Groundhog Day. Buoyed by a few early wickets then losing hope as the game gets taken out of reach. The odd bright spell with the bat when you yet again have hope only for it to be dashed again when wickets are thrown away.
Sigh 😞

I have just spent a day at Hove. I treated myself to a pavilion upgrade as I thought I might get a nice choice of food and drink there. Er, no. There was a wide variety of alcohol available, and I can see the attraction of getting plastered if you have to sit through bowling performances like that on a regular basis, but some of us just want a nice cappuccino or americano. Not outrageous in this day and age but unless I missed it not available in the pavilion so I popped round to Greig’s. (I can say the staff there were very pleasant but someone should tell them not to run their hands through their hair when serving food and drink). And talking of food that was pretty well non existent unless you wanted a fat laden pie or sausage roll. I saw bacon rolls are on sale until 11.30 but for the life of me can’t see the logic of stopping serving something so quick and easy to provide half an hour after the start of play. Why can’t they be available all day and why can’t a button press coffee machine at the very least be installed in the Long Room?
I realise this is slightly off topic but Sussex needs all the revenue it can raise to sign a bowler.

Idiots can't even get the scoff right. Should have got battered and thrown your unwanted sausage roll at the groundsman Mrs Doyle.
On that, is groundskeeper Willy under instruction? That's how it usually works, right? Who's telling him to give it a skinhead? Skinheads are gone, not welcome, leave a bit on. It's not difficult & anyone with an ounce of sanity knows if you bat strong & bowl weak, leave a bit on. And vice-versa. It ain't rocket biology.
On sanity, has Haines lost the plot? I didn't see it, I saw his wicket, but 17 odd off 10 odd slashing at a wide one? Plot's gone. Got the arse, giving up. Needs sorting quick. One OS and a word in Willy's ear. That's it.
Hopefully Mohammed 'the Biz' wan & Juice can bat out of their skins to secure the draw we were only ever likely to get in the first place. Thanks very much Rob Andrew & Keith Greenfield.
