I’m looking forward to this season more than I have for the last few. Let’s hope Farbrace is a point of difference and not just another coach who talks the talk. He’s already said Pujara will captain and the wicketkeeper will be the best keeper, not the best batter. He’s also said Garton will bat at 7 with Carson 8 and McAndrew 9. He intends to go into every game with 4 seamers and 1 spinner.
Think Durham will be a strong contender for promotion this year so a good showing against them would get our season off to a good start.
My team:
Haines Orr Alsop Pujara (c) Clark Carter/Tear Garton Carson McAndrew Robinson Atkins/ Hunt

Whilst i like the idea of 4 seamers and 1 spinner it looks unbalanced to me. Clark is an improving seamer and playing Ibrahim youd get overs out of him if needed too.

Is anyone able to provide an update on bowler fitness as we approach the new season? Karvelas, Currie, HP and Finn would all be ahead in my order of preference over Atkins and Hunt if available.

Is anyone able to provide an update on bowler fitness as we approach the new season? Karvelas, Currie, HP and Finn would all be ahead in my order of preference over Atkins and Hunt if available. According to Farbrace on the talksport cricket podcast earlier this week, Finn has a long term injury. I would expect it to McAndrew, Robbo, Garton and then 1 of Atkins/Crocombe/Currie/Karvelas/Hunt to form the seam attack with Carson as spinner. I think Ibrahim will play (probably instead of Clark) given how highly Farbrace has been talking him up, so there's another bowling option there

Clark has better averages than Ibrahim in both batting and bowling.

Haines Orr Alsop Pujara (c) Clark Carter Garton Hudson-Prentice Carson McAndrew Robinson
Sussex batting in 2022 CC Pujara 1,094, Orr 1,047, Haines 941, Alsop 930, Clark 765 and Carter 629. The batting isn't the problem.
Sussex took 155 wickets @ 49.15 across 14 county championship matches which is 11 per match. You are not going to win any games of cricket with these stats.

I’d swap HP and Garton in the batting order but otherwise I’d pick the same team as Coverpoint. If Robinson bats at 11 that would be an impressive sign of our batting depth. Including Clark and Haines we’d also have 7 bowlers to call upon … and all this before Steve Smith walks through the door.

So, based on our inept performance vExeter Uni; what is the team? Pujara and McAndrew come in. Garton was poor, is he fit? Ibrahim didn't bowl an over? Is he fit? Lets hope we can raise our game. Exeter Uni outplayed us at various stages in batting, bowling and fielding. Yes, I know its early days. Wake up call for Farbrace.

Disappointed with our showing against a bunch of students. Carter batted well and will probably get the nod over Tear. Thought our bowlers got a lot more out of the pitch yesterday, appeared to flatten out today. Lots of missed catches in the slips.
We’ll hopefully have Pujara, McAndrew and Robinson for Thursday.

A poor performance and result vs Exeter, but no need to get too carried away just yet. Lots of circumstances for this match that (hopefully) won't be repeated again this season:
First time they've been out on the grass in a match situation which obviously will not be repeated again.
Alsop skipper not Pujara which, injury permitting, is not going to happen again.
I'll be surprised if Carter keeps in the first game, suspect it will be Tear or Alsop.
No McAndrew or Robinson weakens the bowling.
Didn't look like a great pitch based on what I saw on the livestream and the highlight clips that the social media accounts have put out. Lots of uneven bounce. Suspect the pitch for Durham will be flatter and truer at least for the first 2 - 3 days.
Maybe Exeter uni actually played pretty well...maybe? They are allowed to you know!
I'm certainly no apologist for the players or the board, but there really is no need to be too concerned just yet.
Onwards GOSBTS.

I was expecting Tear to start the season with the gloves, but with Carter selecteds for the university game, I guess he will get the nod. Then for the seamers, do we go with an FHP or Ibrahim as a strong number 7, or go with the stronger seam attack on the basis that Garton, McAndrew and Robinson can all bat better than tailenders? I'd go for the latter, and therefore:
Orr, Haines, Alsop, Pujara, Clark, Carter, Garton, McAndrew, Robinson, Carson, Currie

Just my personal taste but I really don't see the need for 4 out and out seamers especially when you have the quality of Robinson in your team and we have so many batters that can bowl options in Haines, Ibrahim and Clark.

Will robinson be allowed to play? I hope so, but knowing how the ECB operate Sussex are likely to be shafted. Haines is a genuine bowler. I see Clarke as someone to throw the ball to when we are trying to buy a wicket. Carter and Tear both have a lot to bring to the Club in future years across all formats; and there should be good healthy competition between the two. Please Sussex don't mess them around by buying in the big named keepers (we also have Alsop). Last years model was nothing short of criminal. My main worry is still our bowling. Good to see Carson bowling overs, and I think Coles is a very good cricketer who should get some red ball game time. I hope McAndrew bowls well. From what I saw v Exeter Uni our young pacemen still bowl too many "4" balls. Hudson Prentice should play, but I am worried about Garton. He has pace but can he last four days. Finally why didn't Ibrahim bowl v Exeter?
