Academy play Essex academy in a day/night game at Hove on Thursday, 3pm start. I would play Doram and Hooper instead of Smith and Allen, and Jenner instead of Ludlow. Jenner is never available and has only played six games in three years for Sussex. We need players who are fully committed to Sussex. Ludlow, Smith and Allen are pushing for Academy selection and so should be selected.

I can think of twelve boys off the top my head who deserve to be selected ahead of Jenner for the Academy for next season. Jenner needs to get runs against county opposition first. His two tons last season came against Oxfordshire. I'm pleased to see him joining Hurstpierpoint who have an excellent record of developing young players. Hooper at 18 is too old for the Academy and has taken five wickets this season after ninety five in the previous two and will be lucky to get an Academy Plus contract. Doram should be selected. Allen and Smith have both taken sixteen wickets. Ludlow has scored 3 50s this season.

Jenner has done very well for Jersey Under 19s as shown by his recent score of 120 off 75 balls against Guernsey. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8JSclD7U9YI would like to have seen him play more for Sussex before being selected for the Academy. Jenner does have commitments with Jersey. He did score hundreds last season for Sussex Under 16 and 17 and so could have been selected for the Academy last winter. If you are comparing him against Sear and Ludlow then he should be selected for the Academy. With no Cammish, Garton, Hemingway or Ludlow in the top six next year the opportunity is there for him to bat at 3 and keep wicket. Haines and Sear will open which leaves four middle order batting places and the keeper position up for grabs. There are two seam bowling spots up for grabs with five likely to contest these. Under 17s in 2015 Haines Sear Four from eight: Billings Clark Haynes Jenner Lloyd Maskell Orr Rollings Doram Oxley Two from five: Bradley Fazakerley Piper Smith Twine Rattle Collard

Next season there will be many changes in the under 17 boys and girls as James Allen, Kurtis Browning, Leo Cammish,, George Garton, Beck Hemingway, Joe Ludlow and Jacob Smith are no longer eligible for the boys and Izzy Collis, Abbie Freeborn, Tanya Wake, Georgia Tibble, Holly Tasker, Charlotte Walder and Kezia Barrett are no longer eligible for the girls.
I would select the following squads:
Under 17 Boys: Tom Haines (C), Jonty Jenner (WK and VC), Joe Billings (WK), Ollie Bradley, Tom Clark, Will Collard, Daniel Doram, Will Fazakerley, Tom Haynes, Harry Lloyd (WK), Ryan Maskell (WK), Alistair Orr (WK), Nick Oxley, Jamie Piper, Sam Rattle, Harry Rollings, Dominic Sear, Nick Smith and Ben Twine.
Starting XII: Haines (C), Sear, Jenner (WK), Doram, Oxley, Billings, Twine, Smith, Rattle, Collard plus two out of Bradley, Clark, Fazakerley, Haynes, Lloyd, Maskell, Orr, Piper and Rollings.
Under 17 Girls: Ellen Burt (C), Flora Bertwistle (VC), Bethany Beadle, Molly Beadle, Ella Bourne, Natasha Burbridge, Anna Harris, Nancy Harman, Beth Harvey, Nicola Howell, Georgina Humphreys, Eleanor Monk, Tara Norris, Eleanor Robinson, Jessica Saunders, Coco Streets, Ella Wadey and Alexandra Woodward.
Starting XII: Bertwistle, Wadey, Burt (C), Bourne, Norris, Harman, Streets, Harris, Howell, Robinson, B Beadle, Monk

Is this the influence of Prior, Brown, Jackson in that every youngster in Sussex wants to keep wicket? What about the girls?

Five is a lot but Jenner, Lloyd and Maskell are 17 next year and so there will only be Billings and Orr in 2016. I don't know who will keep wicket for the girls as Abbie Freeborn was the keeper this year and Charlotte Walder was her deputy. Both turn 18 next year.

Better to have more to choose from than be stuck with only one or two? I heard recently that Jackson was going to be released at the end of the season but that Matt Prior is now going to retire so Jackson is staying put! Don't know how reliable the information is but it was told to me by one of the Sussex youngsters. We would be mad to release Jackson as if Prior rediscovers his form we are likely to lose Brown. If he doesn't we will still need him as a deputy. The sooner Beer, Brown, Jackson, Piolet and Wells sign new contracts the better. I also think Hudson-Prentice deserves to be offered a pro contract after the way he played for the seconds last season by scoring over 700 runs with two centuries and taking 20 wickets.

My advice is don't sign, go where you will be more valued. You're all Sussex boys and not really treated the same as an import! Time to go!

CP, who do you think will get Academy Plus contracts this season? The stand out candidate was Hudson-Prentice, who should get one if he isn't taken directly on to the staff. There were interesting cameos from some of the younger players but they are more likely to be considered the year after I would have thought. If we are likely to be stretched budget wise, two quality seamers won't come cheap, then maybe that's a small saving we can make

However, Salt with his performances for the Sussex Development XI and Hooper given his performances in age group cricket over the last three years could be offered Academy Plus contracts. I wouldn't offer Grant, Moses, Whittingham, Sakande, Hayward or Shoare anything. Of those finishing next year Cammish and Garton look the standout candidates.

OK, now Fynn Hudson-Prentice has his junior pro contract, who, if any, are the candidates for academy plus places?

OK, now Fynn Hudson-Prentice has his junior pro contract, who, if any, are the candidates for academy plus places? With Hayward having parted company with Sussex, Hooper having been released and with Hudson-Prentice having signed a Junior Pro contract that leaves six options. Salt 554 runs @ 185 HS 200* 2 100s, 3 50's Shoare 232 runs @ 33 HS 79 2 50's Sakande 3 wickets @ 18 BB 2-43 Moses 3 wickets @ 30 BB 2-46 Whittingham 0-33 1 match Grant 0-65 BB 0-16 Salt played very well for the Development XI. Grant, Moses, Sakande, Shoare and Whittingham made very little progress last season. Salt would be the only player I would offer an Academy Plus contract to. Three players to keep an eye on next year: Garton with 738 runs @ 31 and 77 wickets @ 22 in the last three seasons. Haines 1,436 runs @ 42 in the last two seasons. Cammish 550 runs @ 50 in 2014 with two hundreds.
