Academy face Three Bridges tomorrow looking to build on the win against Brighton and Hove. Hopefully Salt, Hudson-Prentice and Grant will return. Moses, Sakande, Garton, Keats and Golding are unavailable for the Academy as they are Three Bridges players and cannot play against their parent club. With George Garton and Tim Moses missing I expect Stuart Whittingham and Will Fazakerley to be given the call:
Possible XI: Haines, Hemingway, Shoare (c), Salt, Hudson-Prentice, Cammish (+), Grant, Hooper, Whittingham, Hayward, Fazakerley
As much as I would like to see Ludlow, Oxley, Jenner, Doram, Allen or Whyte get selected as I believe they all have the ability to break into the Academy squad for next year it is hard to see where to fit them in as Sussex appeared to plenty of options in all departments apart from the seam bowling. Their opportunities will surely come for the Under 17s with Shoare, Salt, Hudson-Prentice, Grant, Hooper, Whittingham, Hayward, Moses, Sakande and Golding not being eligible for the Under 17s because of age.

Sussex were beaten by five wickets. Ludlow scored 39, Moses 30* and three wickets and Garton took two wickets for Three Bridges while for Sussex Salt scored 85* and Hudson-Prentice scored 41 and took three wickets.
Team for the game in two weeks time against East Grinstead? Haines, Hemingway, Shoare (c), Ludlow, Salt, Cammish (+), Moses, Grant, Hooper, Garton, Hayward
The seam bowling looked a little weak last time. The return of Garton, Grant and Moses coupled with that of left arm spinner Josh Hayward should improve things. Hopefully Joe Ludlow will be given a chance in place of East Grinstead all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice who is ineligble for this match.

This one is probably for Coverpoint. Who are our academy plus players for 2014? I think Moses and Sakande have contracts, but who are the others?

This one is probably for Coverpoint. Who are our academy plus players for 2014? I think Moses and Sakande have contracts, but who are the others? The Academy Plus Players along with Grant and Whittingham although I have heard no formal announcement on this. The Academy players for 2014 are Leo Cammish, Izzy Collis, Freya Davies, George Garton, Tom Haines, Josh Hayward, Beck Hemingway, Elliott Hooper, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, Paige Scholfield, Phil Salt and Ben Shoare. Only Cammish, Collis, Garton, Haines and Hemingway are young enough to be selected in 2015 meaning plenty of openings for new players. The tougher task will be wittling down Davies, Hayward, Hooper, Hudson-Prentice, Grant, Moses, Sakande, Schofield and Whittingham down to three Academy Plus players. Davies and Scholfield will go into the Womens squad. The others are fighting to be named Academy Plus players with Hooper, Hudson-Prentice and Shoare leading the way.

Will the world end if we name more than three? I'm sure an extra couple of that bunch wouldn't cost more than a Zaidi, Liddle or Lewis.

Will the world end if we name more than three? I'm sure an extra couple of that bunch wouldn't cost more than a Zaidi, Liddle or Lewis. There maybe more than three however this isn't normally the case. Today Phil Salt (147*) and Josh Hayward (6-68) certainly have done their chances no harm if more than three are named. Academy captain and second top run scorer last year Ben Shoare may have a job on his hands to get an Academy Plus contract with the form Phil Salt is showing. It will be interesting to see who out of Elliott Hooper and Josh Hayward gets the spinner spot. The four seamers on Academy Plus contracts have failed to kick on. Other noteable performances in the Academy's win against Preston Nomads were George Garton (64*) who shared in an unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 131 with Salt and Jamie Allen (4-58).

I would be happy to operate a reduced squad of twenty, assuming we can tweak the squad so that most of the players can operate in all formats. We could then have, maybe, five or six on academy plus contracts, but they must be given game time at second eleven level. How many times have Sakande or Whittingham played for the seconds? Yes they have university commitments but in that case, is it really worth giving them academy plus contracts. The club really need to get to grips with the succession policy

Lovelyboy - Academy Plus is supposed to for 18-21 year olds. It is a stepping stone between the Academy and 2XI so that players who are deemed not quite ready to be offered a contract o they can be looked at in closer quarters by the Sussex coaches. The Academy is for 15-18 year old players considered to have the potential to represent Sussex 1XI in the future. Phil Salt was something of a left field selection by Greenfield as he wasn't part of or Academy or youth setup prior to last season as he was playing for Guildford. Jonboy - Grant, Sakande and Whittingham haven't been taking wickets for Oxford and Loughborough UCCE and so don't warrant selection for the seconds based on this. Moses since finishing at Hurstpierpoint hasn't done much either. With nine boys in the Academy this leaves just two places for Grant, Moses, Sakande and Whittingham. Grant and Moses play for the Development XI because they are the best options for the balance of the team. It wouldn't surprise me if none of the four were in the Academy Plus next season with Hayward, Hooper, Hudson-Prentice, Salt and Shoare due to finish in the Academy this season. If I was picking the Academy Plus players now I would go with Hooper, Hudson-Prentice and Shoare although I wouldn't be surprised if Hayward and Salt were given Academy Plus contracts too. For me Garton is the best seamer we have outside of the current Sussex squad. On a seperate note how did Under 15s lose to Middlesex? Do we not have any seamers capable of taking wickets? Under 17s could struggle next season with a seam attack of Fazakerley, Piper and Twine. Why didn't leg spinner Will Collard bowl his full allocation? Good effort by left arm spinner Sam Rattle and left arm Chinaman Nick Oxley. Good batting from Academy batsman Tom Haines. Where was Ross Whyte? Are Doram and Jenner likely to return for the Under 17s? Is there any chance of Ludlow rediscovering the form he showed in the first half of last season and justifying his billing as a potential Academy batsman? sussexcb.play-cricket.com/view_results_details?id=11865814

Under 17s play at Blackstone when the firsts play against Northants. It could be interesting to see who will be selected. For me the following are certainties having been selected in the Academy: Cammish Garton Haines Hemingway The next five are spinners who are in top ten wicket takers this season: Collard - 14 year old leg spinner who with 12 wickets @ 11.83 looks a real find. Oxley - 15 year old left arm Chinaman who is starting to fulfil his much talked about potential with the potential to score runs too. Rattle - 15 year old slow left armer who has taken wickets and been for the most part extremely economical. Allen - 17 year old left arm spinner who has carried on from his impressive end to last season. Smith - 17 year old off-spinner who has stepped up this season after taking six-for in the last Academy game of 2013. This leaves just three spaces for the following: Doram Jenner Ludlow Whyte The first two have yet to appear this season however Jenner scored two tons and Doram took 15 wickets last season. There must be question marks over their availability what with them playing games for Jersey and Holland. Ludlow was the second top run scorer with 348 runs @ 35 last season and was unlucky to miss out on Academy selection with Hemingway who scored 320 runs @ 32 being selected instead. His form with the bat since August 2013 is a worry as he has scored just 33 runs in 7 innings and was out for a second ball duck against Preston Nomads. However, the form he showed for the Under 17s in 2013 warrants selection. Whyte averaged 35 with the bat and 21 with the ball last season but has only played one game this term scoring 24* but not bowling. Collard, Oxley and Rattle appear to have jumped ahead of him in the spin bowling queue for the Under 15s. With six spinners in the team Whyte could miss out. Seam bowling is the biggest concern with only Garton a shoe-in. Keats hasn't appeared for the Development XI this season and has only taken 2 wickets for Three Bridges. Browning has played two games for the Development XI but failed to take a wicket and has only taken three wickets for Cuckfield. Jamie Piper has only taken 3 wickets for Worthing and 1 for the Development XI. Will Fazakerley played one game for the Development XI going wicketless from five overs but he seems to be behind Piper in the pecking order for Worthing. Ben Twine hasn't appeared for Eastbourne 1XI and has only two wickets for Sussex. Seven of the top ten wicket takers are spinners. Garton and Haines to open the bowling. Sussex team: Tom Haines, Beck Hemingway, Leo Cammish (+), Joe Ludlow, Jonty Jenner / Ross Whyte depening on the former's availability, Nick Oxley, George Garton (c), Jacob Smith, Will Collard, James Allen, Daniel Doram, Sam Rattle 13th man: Ross Whyte Middlesex look a strong outfit and will pose a tough test for our fledgling stars. Their final 12 is likely to come from the following fifteen: MDE Holden, Kushal Patel (c), Hemanshu Hirani, Don Manuwelge, Aaran Amin, A Thomas (+), N Rawal (+), A Godsal, R Prabhakar, TN Walallwita, T McLeod, Abdullah Nazir, MK Andersson, J Ilott, S Tinkler I would omit Andersson, Ilott and Tinkler from the final twelve with Thomas playing as a specialist batsman and Rawal keeping wicket. The other telling statistic is that for Sussex only 7 of the 15 will be only able to play for the Under 17s in 2015 compared with 12 for Middlesex. Sussex need Orr, Lenham, Whyte, Fazakerley, Twine and Piper to make big strides in the next twelve months if we are to fill the gaps left by Cammish, Garton, Hemingway, Ludlow, Smith, and Allen. Keats and Browning won't be eligible either. Elsewhere three youngsters who have joined Sussex Premier League clubs: Phil Salt from Saffon Walden to Brighton and Hove Jacob Smith from Seaford to Eastbourne Daniel Doram to Hastings Davies and Scholfield potential recognised: www.alloutcricket.com/cricket/features/top-teens-in-the-uk-and-ireland-here-come-the-girlsWill Collard, Sam Rattle and Tanya Wake are certainly throwing their names into the hat for Academy selection in 2015. Hurstpierpoint have had an excellent season with Joe Ludlow scoring 900 runs and George Garton scoring 600 runs and 20 wickets.

www.crichq.com/#matches/163967Under 17s lost which is hardly a surprise considering the following: 1) Our best seamer Garton didn't bowl. 2) No Haines, Cammish, Jenner, Oxley, Collard or Rattle. What did we expect against such a strong team? Why are we experimenting rather than picking our best team? The only positives for Sussex were 5-37 and 53* from Daniel Doram and 2-41 from Jacob Smith. Only three Middlesex players stood out. Lace and Patel with 106 and 54 respectively and spinner Walallawita with 3-32.

CP availability at this age group varies for all sorts of reasons during term time, so don't be surprised by absences.
What excites me about this scorecard is the performance of Doram. I saw him bowl for the seconds last year and was very impressed. I think he was then 15, though he was a six footer. I remember the coaches saying he was also a good batter, as seemingly shown today.
