Looking more like Scenario 2 as Somerset get a second point and Hampshire limp to 185-6. Ironically the most successful bowler is Allenby with 3-31. Allenby is much derided by Somerset players as being an underperforming, over-promoted import from the Second division.
Elsewhere, Yorkshire's championship as Middlesex fall apart under the white heat of the youthful Yorkshire pace attack - 5 to Sidebotham (age 37) and 4 to the tyro 30 year old Bresnan. Meanwhile Durham quickly moving to remove the faint mathermatical chance that they could get caught in the relegation backwash by reducing Notts at one stage to 73-7, now recovering but not looking healthy.

I queried why Somerset have signed Luke Ronchi for the last few matches. Today he took 7 catches. I have my answer.

Somerset 3 points, Hampshire 1 at the close with Somerset 147 - 0. This is definitely Scenario 2, and Somerset ought to end this game on present showing at least 10 points clear of Sussex with Hampshire probably 16 points behind and in all likelihood relegated - unless they do something extraordinary in their last 2 games. Still not enough for Sussex to be too sanguine about, and in any case, why not aspire to beat Somerset, who have under-performed so often this year?

Sometimes I fear respiring is beyond us. Glad that Trescothwick has found sound form. Terrific player in his prime. Headingley is an impossible place to foresee a win, so must at least avoid defeat against Somerset and hope the rains come later in Yorkshire. In any case, survival will not offer any prospect of success next year. Changes must be made.

With 7 balls of the 110 overs to go Hampshire gained their second bonus point - Cooper out for 118 to Dawson, at 483-3. Somerset will win this comfortably, probably tomorrow, and Hampshire will have 130 points from 14 games to 146 for Sussex.

A thoroughly thrilling day at Taunton, with Hampshire 258-1 off 90 overs at the close, aggregate 498 chasing Somerset's 630. Should get there around 2.15, with the inevitable handshake soon after. Thus Hampshire pretty much lose touch and unless Yorkshire are feeling soft, will go back down; Somerset will be level on points with Sussex, and they will remain so after next week's rains bring an end to festivities. After that, Headingley, but it is of academic, and possibly statistical, interest only.
A shame, it could have been a gripping finish to the season, but it really has failed to grip after the first few matches, and for all the fine words about the strength of Yorkshire, their dominance only underlines how weak the standard is , barring a few star players.

Not quite sure it is all over. If Somerset v Hampshire is a draw and next week is a washout, it still means we are under threat if Hampshire win at Notts. Better not to make too many assumptions.

Yep - just let events unfold, is my approach. No point agonising at this stage - there's too many variables.

Especially about the weather - those chancers can only tell you accurately how the weather's been, after you've got in either sun burnt or soaked through. Don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows, as Popeye used to say.

In a RL cup match earlier this season Northants were 0-3 in the first over yet recovered to win the match. Middlesex were 0-3 after Sidebottom's over in this latest match yet have just beaten Yorkshire. Moral of story? Never give up.

Many congratulations to Hampshire for their robust fight-back against Somerset and eventual much deserved draw. Sussex are now level with Somerset on 146 points but lie 6th due to one extra win. The second relegation place is now a three horse scrap between Sussex, Somerset and Hampshire with Worcestershire already gone. This makes the match at Hove next week even more important but the forecast is for consistent showers over all four days. It seems that weather could well decide the final relegation place but let us pray this won't happen. Hampshire have Yorkshire at home followed by Notts away. So two tough games. Yorkshire, it appears, will also influence that second relegation place! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/county-championship-division-one/table

I suggest we all club together and make a substantial donation to their beer kitty after the Hampshire game. Judging by the Middlesex game, it would seem that they can't hold their liquor when celebrating. I am sure the word 'allegedly' ought to appear somewhere.

Play now abandoned for the day at Southampton, probably eliminating the slim chance of them getting a win against Yorkshire.
