If Garton is fit and firing for us next season it would make a big difference, so for him and for us, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

So George Garton has a hip injury which explains his sporadic appearances and limited impact again this season. I really hope he gets over all the fitness problems and returns to his (pretty spectacular) pre-Covid form. It would be like signing a new top class player.

I'm a bit cynical on this. Am not surprised Garton is "miraculously"fit to play in the 100. Shame he has lost his Sussex mojo. Any guesses where he will end up?

To be honest I don't care where he ends up next season. We can't afford to keep players who continually make themselves unavailable to play for Sussex. It's no surprise to me that Garton is fit enough for the start of the hundred.

To be honest signing a hundred contract should be grounds for instant dismissal. Counties need to take a stand andd stand up to end this lunacy. It's like Harry Kane playing for Arsena or Ben Stokes playing for Australia. Boparra, Mills and Garton are a waste of space. We should only be signing players who actually want to play for the county.

If you’re expecting any player to stay loyal to their county rather than sign deals to play in franchise tournaments (that provide financial security for their families) then you’re likely to be disappointed. It’s not a new phenomenon either. Remember the Kerry Packer rebel tournament and the sanction busting tours to South Africa. I don’t think the Hundred has many years left to run though. There isn’t a loyal enough fan base for these invented franchises.

Personally as things currently stand, I wouldn't offer Garton a new contract after next season and would release him as he does absolutely nothing for Sussex to warrant another contract. If Bopara, Garton and Mills want to play mickey mouse franchise cricket for made up teams then that's fine but it won't be at Sussex's expense. Of the three Garton annoys me the most as we have invested a long of time, effort and money in Garton and for what? For him to stick two figures up at Sussex and instead of look for the next pay cheque. My message for Garton is don't come back to Sussex when it all blows up in your face.

There isn’t a loyal enough fan base for these invented franchises. I'm not expecting him to do that, we've learnt that in the past with several of our players. Of course Franchise cricket money is always going to appeal and so much leeway is given to them all to be able to do it. In fact i dont think Sussex have stood in anyones way of doing that. However I do expect a contracted player to honour said contract when is available to play. From what I gather he has refused to play red ball cricket this year.

I find it difficult to judge without knowing more. I suspect it’s related to his fitness problems. If he doesn’t feel strong enough to play 3 day cricket and is worried about letting the team down, that would be fair enough. If he’s just being precious and doesn’t want to jeopardise his Hundred contract, that would be a very different matter. Based on his early season form he wouldn’t merit selection anyway.
We wouldn’t retain a player who doesn’t want to play for us, and he wouldn’t want to stay, so I guess this will come to a head quite quickly.

I don't think we should be signing or keeping players unless they agree to play all three forms of the game. If that means saying goodbye to Bopara, Garton and Mills then so be it.

I think that is his point. We have to say goodbye to good players unless they want to play all formats and that's why the Bopara decision was made. My issue with George is why come out with all the I want to play red ball crap when you don't mean it. I've always feared his ego would get the better of him and I think it has. Farbs is about good dressing room fits and maybe he's outing all our prima donas
