He should be first in line as Philander's replacement in my opinion. Archer and Jordan/Garton with the new ball.

Mentioned by Bob Willis on The Verdict last night as one of two ( Tom Helm being the other ) young quicks who are firmly in England's sights and who may feature sooner rather than later.

Bob Willis's statement is just bizarre.

I imagine a good part of it is England's current obsession with getting a fast left arm bowler into the test setup.

I know Garton has impressed the selectors when he's played for the Lions and he was invited to train with England ahead of the second test against SA but it does seem a tad early for the lad. He's only just 20 and has played very little championship cricket.

He has to play regularly for Sussex now and England should be on our case about it. You can't have 30+ year old Kolpaks or has-beens holding up his or Whittingham's development. England have tried financial rewards to entice counties, it ain't working at Sussex, they need to get on our backs cos our Kolpak coach could not care less.

And? That doesn't make him a Kolpak. Usual lack of knowledge on this forum.

All: this is a thread about George Garton, not what constitutes anyone's idea of a Kolpak. All posts not on topic will be deleted.

Nice that Lawrence Booth is such a fan but anyone who has watched him bowl knows that he is a long way short of the consistency needed for Test match cricket. Indeed he needs more county experience to learn when to bowl a different length. He has the basic talent to succeed, great pace and an excellent yorker, but I could see Warner and Smith carving him for 100 in 15 overs and crushing his spirit. Let the Currans or the Overtons break their backs this winter and George will be the one to come through next year - provided he is given the match experience by Sussex.
