Just got home ..... a day of two halves. 188-0 to 355-8. That pretty much tells the story. If there is a worse bowling attack in Division 2 than Essex, bring them on. After the tripe which was served to Nash, who gorged himself manfully, aided and abetted by a sedate Joyce, who played a proper opener's innings, we had the occasional off-spin of Westley and the sixth bowler desperation of Tendo. Sufice to say that they had combined figures at one stage of 7 overs 3-19 .... madness! Machan and Brown both looked horrified to have been given out. Robinson played with a degree of calm, but looked like an 8/9 to me. Essex must be smiling.

Nice day's cricket with three contrasting sessions.
Good to see the two proper openers restored to their right positions after they moved bewilderingly up and down the order under the old regime. Robinson batted nicely, although I'd still rather see Finch at six, Brown at seven and Robinson at eight.
Essex look like a well-organised and motivated side. They gifted some early runs but kept at it, even when the scorebopard read 180-0. The last time I saw them at Tunbridge Wells in July last year, they were a shambolic rabble at the fag end of the Grayson era and loked like they didn't want to be there. Silverwood seems to have drilled them into a much sharper unit. Let's hope Davis has the same impact at Sussex (although his predecessor was in attendance and it would be no surprise if he's already missing the f/c game).
Two complaints. First, Neil Beck's Books Banished? No sign of him or his stall anywhere on the ground.
Secondly, there's a new wifi system involving a Sussex Cricket Retailpower log-in page that demands all sorts of person details, including date of birth. Why they need to know your birthday I've no idea (are the gospel quartet of Jim, Zac, Mark and Luke planning to send me a card?) But there's a drop down menu for you to enter the day, month and year which wouldn't work (at least on my phone, although it let me input all the other info). It then said: "please fill all required fileds" (sic, © Sussex Proofreading) and wouldn't permit me to proceed until I had entered my d.o.b. Which it wouldn't let me do.
So no wifi in the ground all day for me. Did anybody else have this problem?

No problems with Wi-Fi all day. Might just be a problem with certain operating systems. Mine is Android. What's yours, Howard?

Our middle order quartet of Machan, Taylor, Wells and Brown need to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror as they were weak and pathetic. They got themselves out today with rubbish batting!

Hove Featherbed? Or quick and bouncy? We've spent the last two years trying to produce a quick and bouncy one, apparently, so have we? Nash scored four quickfire 30s instead of the usual one so that's certainly good. Essex's strength looks like their batting so we'll know more about this score tomorrow I reckon.
Not sure I'd rather see Cook having helmet trouble or not - maybe just for three days.

Hove feather bed Fraudster which makes our middle order's poor shot selection all the more frustrating as I can see Essex scoring 600 against our attack.

If our much vaunted attack concede over 400 again, there should be serious questions asked

Why is there always pessimistic speculation? Let's see how the pitch plays for our bowlers before you bemoan them. Hopefully we can get to 400+ this morning which would be a decent score to defend. I sometimes wonder if half the posters on this message board are actually Sussex supporters?

In this particular instance, less than impressive bowling in the last four matches, the two friendlies, the Uni game, and the game at Northampton, this following on from an abysmal season last year. Yes, hopefully we will reach 400, and that should be enough to put pressure on them. You would expect, our bowlers to outshine their collection of medium pacers and a part time spinner. However, it doesn't always work out like that

The last team Essex came down to Sussex for a championship match... www.cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/77/77309.html- Foster, Napier and ten Doeschate were in the side
- The current England captain was their opener, but was not captaining them in the game
- The winners of the toss made 340
- Sussex had a middle order collapse in their first innings and lost 5 wickets between 231 and 280 - but went on to lead on the first innings
Interesting to see if more of those precedents appear in this match, even though that one was at Arundel and in July. Despite the presence of Mushtaq and Goodwin the match was really won by two innings from Tony Cottey and 5 wickets in each innings from Lewry.

I always consider 350 a par score first up. 355-8 is therefore above par and the speed at which it has been achieved means a result more likely than not. Suffice to say we will need to bowl better than we have been if we are to prevail.

Apart from Nash's inspired knock it was Ollie who was man of the day for me. His 50 was self-assured and mature and much required, shoring up the disappointment of the middle-order collapse. And with two good batsmen still in, if we can get off to a fast start, I am hopeful of a 400 score and 5 batting points this morning.
