With the changes to the toss it takes some serious balls to prepare a wicket that green judging by the photo! I'm at Derby, the Wicket isn't too bad, looks very dry and left the grass on so it doesn't spin! There is some even bounce though! Whittingham has bowled very well and been the most threatening! Hatchett bowled well this morning and a drop by Brown and an edge which went through slips meant he was very unlucky! Robinson I thought bowled poorly and was largely ineffective!

With the changes to the toss it takes some serious balls to prepare a wicket that green judging by the photo! Or lack of nous - almost no other groundsman has tried it on with the current regulations. Leicestershire are 142-1 having been put in by Northants on the toss award basis, and that will probably be a 400+ score. I don't have a problem with wickets that give the bowlers a chance, but the ECB have this mania that it is somehow deleterious to Test prospects because young batsmen get out to balls that scuttle or wobble off the seam - as if that wasn't actually a good way for young batsmen to learn their game and improve. Whiles writing this 105-5, with another each for Whittingham and Hatchett and the mouth-watering prospect of a second bonus bowling point for only the second time this season beckons!

Encouraging stuff this from Hatchett and Whittingham, Robinson appears to be in second season syndrome mode.

And Whittingham goes off the field with a suspected hamstring pull!

Looks as if Whittington maybe injured! Was due to bowl second over after tea! Ran in but then stopped mid run up, had a word with Ben Brown and went off into the changing room and Robinson now bowling over instead!
Robinson has gone for 2 boundaries and bowled a no ball!

Well done, team. Well done, Hatchett man. Hope that Stuart Whittingham's absence is precautionary.
Oh - Joyce drops another.

Well done hatchett. second best figures of his career i think.
well done ben brown for good decision on outting them in.
well done the four man attack. although if whittingham is injured no doubt someone will be along to tell us that's why we should play five bowlers!

It is also interesting that Wells is now at 3 rather than Machan. Wells may not be a perfect No 3 but in Machan's present form it may be a pragmatic move, and like the other decisions in this game, a sign of learning. Good to see and good luck with it.

a drop by Brown off Hatchett. dropped a regulation one v Leics last week, too. captaincy seems to be affecting his game with bat and gloves Also, he missed one at Northampton. I can understand though why, having been made vice captain, it would perhaps be a little too early to relieve him of the job. Hopefully, batting back at seven will suit his game
