Yes, a good day for the Sussex seamers, and a pretty solid start from the batsmen. Hopefully the better balance, six batters, with Brown at seven, should see us build a substantial lead

5fer for the Hatchett man! How did he look Joe? Did he get it hooping? Not at the game, just listening online. The fact that the pitch was green and all the wickets went to pace probably tells you all you need to know! It's a shame Whittingham had to go off before his second spell as it sounds as if he bowled very well in his first. Hopefully he can rest tomorrow! I didn't realise that he was 22, older than Robinson.

dropped a regulation one v Leics last week, too. captaincy seems to be affecting his game with bat and gloves Also, he missed one at Northampton. I can understand though why, having been made vice captain, it would perhaps be a little too early to relieve him of the job. Hopefully, batting back at seven will suit his game He's also playing with a bust finger

Is he genuinely crocked? If so, then get Jackson back for a month. He's been trialling at Kent and has been playing second XI cricket and so is game ready. But hopefully today was the day that kick-starts Sussex's season. Doesn't seem like we missed Shahzad or Briggs, both of whom have been dissapointingly below their best this season.

Just to report that Stuart's injury was "only" cramp and he should be aiming to add to his haul in the second innings. Well done to the management for playing bowlers who are in form and full of confidence.

Just a quick report from a glorious day in Derby.
I sat all day behind the bowlers arm at the city end and watched us bowl significantly better than Derbyshire, Hatch and Mags the best of the bunch. Stu Whittingham (Steve as the Derby announcer called him) looked slightly nervous before lunch but came out all guns blazing after the interval and deserved his wickets. Robinson bowled tightly but without success till he got Carter (an absolute rabbit) out. Shout out to Wells who bowled with good control. Negative shout out to Joyce who had a shocker in the field, 2 sitters dropped and a missed chance early on.
When we came out to bat, Derbyshire beat the bat twice in 26 overs (compared to about 1 per over when we bowled). Joyce and Nash looked good but a decent spell from Thakor got a deserved scalp. Certainly the right decision to send out Wells rather than Machan at 3, given the game situation and Matt's form.
All in all a thoroughly pleasant day with plenty of Sussex supporters in attendance

Yep, agree with all, a great first day for Sussex - special congrats to Hatchett and Whittingham - and let us hope this continues the side's turn-a-round in both fortune and mental resolve after the draw against Leicestershire.

What a treat to see the youngsters doing the business. Well done, Mark Davis.

Wells monopolising the strike again through his apparent inability to find a single early in the over. Just faced 29 balls out of 36 and scored 6 runs. Is it the pitch, though?

Wish I hadn't driven up today to watch this. With the weather forecast so poor the next 2 days I was anticipating us going very hard for 2 sessions and declaring at tea. There is clearly zero desire to win this game so heading back home. Shocking stuff, it's the last time I make a trip this year , why should I be arsed to make any effort if the management either don't have clue about how whether affects cricket games or simply can't be arsed to win.

You are (were) there and I am not, but your comments surprise me. The weather forecast suggests a game of nine sessions so we do need to be well clear by the end of today. Wells, as ever is playing for his place. Surely post-lunch, Taylor and Machan can provide the entertainment you crave, and the impetus we require to secure batting points and the win.

pipster1,
No idea what you are mooting. It's steady as she goes and let's pass the Derbyshire score with 9 wickets still in hand. Then the big hitters like Taylor and Machan can up the gears. Wells is fighting for his place, so not surprised he's playing cautiously.
Agreed the weather looks iffy for tomorrow but will believe these thundery showers, if and when they arrive. Sussex have won every session so far in this game, win this game and say 23 points and we are back in contention.

Welcome to the forum pipster1. Strong views but you've got people talking. Anyone else watching today - thinking perhaps of leedsmartlet - who can shed any light on the scoring rate and the pitch?
