With the weather in mind I wish we had declared when Joyce was out and had half an hour bowling at them tonight. Don't agree, you can't ( and shouldn't ) play for the weather especially with 2 days left. Bat hard, bat long and bat once. Set a big score, dominate, put pressure on and then skittle them out, that's how to win a game. If the weather goes against us then at least we've got max batting points which could be vital come the end of the season.

What a great day it was yesterday! By the end of it the borderman lay down with the frawdy and stonewall was reduced to one-word postings. And the acerbic pipster1 came back to explain himself. For the first time this season we have seen a bowler who has run through the opposition, batsmen who have dug in, changed pace and dominated, and at the end of the day, after another mini-collapse a recovery and consolidation. These are all very positive signs, and combined with the change away from the 5 bowler strategy it does look as if we have a coach who is prepared to look at Plan B and a captain, stand in though he is, who is learning with each game and making decisions based on the merits of the game, the ground and the weather rather than a pre-conceived dressing room strategy. However, as borderman has pointed out, there is a lot to do and we are not alone in having had a good day. This is the table, bonus points included. Of the teams above Sussex, Leicestershire and Worcestershire will both win if the weather gives them a chance, and Kent might do. The best outcome for Sussex tomorrow night would be 3rd, with 4th or 5th more likely. There is a long way to go and there is still no certainty about Wright's medical state.

Good post. The point is that every one of those nine sides has batsmen capable of batting for a day and a half. Very few of them have attacks that can skittle sides out cheaply in the first innings. Even fewer have attacks capable of taking 20 wkts without assistance (whether from the wicket or from scoreboard pressure - which , of course, is where the batsmen must play their part). I said this before the season started and I believe it has emphatically been shown to be true over the first month of the season. On paper Sussex should be the strongest bowling side in the division, which was why I made them promotion favourites. Magoffin, Jordan and a focussed Shahzad backed up by a rotating cast of 4th/5th bowlers is one of the few attacks capable of taking 20 wkts. With the likes of Garton and Hatchett delivering somewhat unexpected wickets, there is a little more strength in depth than perhaps we thought, so if the bowling unit can pull together ... What would be only the second CC win in 12 months over the course of today and tomorrow would help enormously. In the course of the poor run over the last year, Sussex has sometimes got itself into good positions but getting over the line has been the problem - which is self-belief as much as anything. But however many overs there are between the rain breaks, Derbys will not bat as poorly as they did in the first innings and a young and inexperienced Sussex attack will have to show perseverance and patience in using scoreboard pressure to press home our advantage.

I headed home last night with BBC, Met Office and locals predicting a two day wash out. I really hope they are wrong and I live to regret bailing out. Fantastic display by Joyce especially from lunch onwards.

While I have as much faith in the BBC weather forecast as I do the South Yorkshire Police force, the future Derby weather offers a game little chance of going the full monty. www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2651347

And, that's it for the day. Not a ball bowled at Derby. Let's hope we get some play tomorrow and skittle them out.

Interesting. Having been told Briggs was an essential member of the side and was expected to play every single match, after three games he's been replaced by a batsman - which is frankly what figures of 3-306 deserve. We now have the four man attack many of us were advocating, although it's very short on experience with both Hatchett and Whittingham in the side and Robinson in only his second season. A surprising decision to bat under the circs? We can be glad that Davis is prepared to re-evaluate and not be so rigid, finally. Credit to him for that too, eventually. No, well done to him. The eleven threw up a couple of surprises but he's got it right - at last. I just can't help myself. That's more like it anywho. Wickets, runs, drops, no-balls, you can't have it all your own way. The balance is right, given the squad. We'd all like five proper bowlers but not at the expense of the team. The performances of Hatchett, Garton and Whittingham so far are very pleasing and may offer the opportunity to rest senior bowlers without the use of a holding bowler, but through actual rest - including Mags I'd hope. Garton was only rested because of his age but they'll want him back in. Can't really drop the Axe Man and Whittingham could be even more impressive over the next two days. Who knows but those options are good and should be used. I don't think the weather is gonna be so bad over the two days. We need to declare now, or after toast and coffee at least and we'll get time to win the game over two days of on and off cricket. Wednesday will be better. Trust the Fraud. I know what new bloke means but a first thing thrust would have been a little premature for me. Congrats to Joyce and Wells too. And Machan at five, yes I think so. Great stuff. You idiot, it chucked it down all day - trust the Fraud? Do you ever get tired of being wrong all the time, you nut-grinder.

Ever heard of Wednesday, it's another day, you window-licker. Man this bloke annoys me. Wednesday's clear all day people, trust the Fraud, it's an emphatic win tomorrow.

Seven of the games around the country look to set to finish as draws, with only Lancs getting underway on time and hoping to force a win v Hants.
Assuming that Lancs can win that will mean the early start to the season - plus the new 'no-toss' option which has persuaded counties to prepare roads instead of the result-inducing seaming wickets one would expect at this time of year - will have given us 26 draws out of 33 matches (27 draws out of 33 if the rain arrives at Old Trafford).
At least that stat makes Sussex's no win in four seem not so bad - even if Lancs are victorious today, we will still be one of 13 win-less teams!
