Far be it from me to be cynical but I wonder if Sussex statements about the prospects for play have more to do with a wish to avoid another sponsorship disaster than to be consistent with strict veracity? Yesterday lunchtime when the drizzle looked to have set in, a senior member of the club's governing board, a man known for his strict adherence to god-fearing statements of the truth rather glumly told s & f and me that he thought it probable that if the rain didn't stop there would be no play till Friday. Of course he could have been entirely misinformed or unaware of the distinction between part of his arm and another part of his anatomy...... To be fair, they are underway only half an hour late and the delay according to BBC commentary was only due to a further dribble of drizzle around the appointed start time. As for your god-fearing chum... well if it is who I think it is, it ain't the first thing he's got wrong this season and I'm sure it won't be the last!

Drizzling again according to Adrian Harms, but it sounds like it's not heavy enough to take them off (although it would be enough to prevent them starting - has anyone ever understood that???)

Heard it mentioned several times at The Oval yesterday. I guess it's like being caught in light rain when you're down the shops....you put up with it but probably wouldn't choose to leave the house in such conditions.

Wright drops Wakely. Can anyone in a Sussex shirt actually catch the ball? Duckett edges through third slip where Wright has vacate. Can we keep three slips and put someone into third slip who can actually catch! Nothing wrong with the pitch now. Northants making batting look extremely easy and putting the Sussex batsmen to shame. Why do we keep bowling Whittingham when he is bowling so poorly when we haven't used Shahzad?

See what happens Wright when you FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get Shahzad on after continually flogging a very expensive Whittingham to death! How can Duckett have not been awarded his county cap yet? northantscricket.com/club/county-caps/

142-2 at lunch.
Have the conditions changed - or have Northants simply bowled and now batted much better than an out-of-sorts Sussex?
With Essex losing, Kent and Worcs drawing and Glos not playing , this was Sussex's chance to put themselves back in the mix in the top half of the table. It looks like they've blown it, which is disappointing as we were all expecting Wright's first championship appearance of the season - and CC debut as club captain - was going to galvanise the side.
On the other hand, a majority of counties have now plyed eight games and at the half-way stage no county has won more than two matches. How many wins is it going to require for promotion? Last year Surrey won the division with eight victories. This season it looks like five might do it...

Listening via the bbc comms microphone, it sounds as if it's absolutely tipping down.

Rain radar shoes an enormous belt of solid rain passing over Arundel (and other places!), not subsiding til after 5:30. Further play today must be doubtful.

Anyone else be glad when this season is over Only if we have some semblance of a credible plan for next year. In his interview, Davis demonstrated that he still has an unending reservoir of baseless optimism, so I'm not holding my breath.

Hopefully we will lose four more sessions in this game. Can we end this season now? It has been an absolute disaster.

My take on it is, we massively underachieved last season. This season, the "new regime" with the better elements of the squad still intact, plus an A list batsman and spinner, can't even manage to compete at this level. We were everyone's favourites to walk the division, the bookies, pundits and fans alike, all thought, with the squad we have, we'd be streets ahead. Now we end up, for the second time, against these same opponents, hanging on and praying for rain. It just isn't good enough

It just isn't good enough Jonathan Swift, the Team Analyst is taking a lot of positives from an absolute drubbing for the development eleven, so all is not lost.
