Machan wont be missing. The Scotland game is tomorrow.
Hopefully Jordan will be available too so could need spaces for both Joyce and Jordan, and possibly even Prior which will make it tight from the team that played at Lancashire.

Good to see all those things. Competition for places should keep everyone at their peak performance levels, whilst knowing that there is room within the squad for different skills in the tournaments yet to come. I'd hope that Prior does play as a wicket-keeper to give England some chance to assess his form in that department, his strokeplay not being in doubt.

Machan missing playing for the Celts, Beero not selected unless the entire squad comes down with bubonic plague, Prior needs another foot massage, Zaidi on an extended run available only to ancient newcomers so where are we - Joyce for Machan? Oi, Squire, who on earth are you and what's your game? Firstly, I knew Machan was available, he's playing tomorrow only for the Scots, and secondly, what sort of a stupid name is Frawdy? That Avatar s**t too. P.S. You have made a fatal error; everybody knows I would never say "Top info, much appreciated." Honestly, don't wet me up.

So, with Prior and Jordan not being available for different reasons, after all, does that make the return of Joyce the only change from the Lanmcashire game? And, if so, where will he bat? He's been in excellent form opening this year, although he says he prefers to bat at 4, although Nash seems to have come back to the same sort of bustling form with which he ended last season and Wells has overcome an indifferent start. Assuming that Yardy stays at 3 - unlikely before the Old Trafford but now unanswerable - it looks as if Hamilton Brown will have to make way. Zaidi was a little more productive with the ball last game, although still not doing justice to his career figures as a batsman, and although Durham haven't shown any faith in Borthwick's bowling, almost every other side has found plenty of work and some good returns for spin even in these early games. Of the faster bowlers only Anyon has disappointed, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in trying Hatchett again so far this year, so if fit he will probably play.
I'll be interested to see if the squad shows much difference to this, with HB and Piolet probably being included and left out when play begins, which may be tomorrow sometime.

And having said all that, here is the squad: JE Anyon BC Brown (wkt) RJ Hamilton-Brown LJ Hatchett EC Joyce (capt) J Lewis MW Machan SJ Magoffin CD Nash LWP Wells LJ Wright MH Yardy SAA Zaidi So Hatchett's star has risen above Piolet. It's also interesting that in the announcement there is mention for Hobden : "Young seamer Matthew Hobden is continuing his rehabilitation from injury but not yet available for selection."
Looks as if Frawdy (the real Frawdy) must have some influence in high places.

With the weather forecast showing major disruption, I would question whether we need five bowlers. Zaidi has to drop out, his batting has been dire, and his bowling in these conditions, won't be an asset. If Hatchett does come in for Zaidi, it would strengthen the bowling, but in a match where it looks as if we'll be reduced to perhaps, half the overs if we're lucky, wouldn't we be better strengthening the batting and trying to secure bonus points. In a shortened days play, we should be able to rotate Magoffin, Lewis, Anyon, Wright and Nash to good effect. If we're gonna play Hatchett, let him play in place of one of the seamers

If we're gonna play Hatchett, let him play in place of one of the seamers I don't think you should ever pick sides just because you're expecting bad weather; you can get caught out very badly if the weather conditions change or move on quickly and you're left with inadequate resources to bowl a team out. The attack you're suggesting - and I assume from what you're saying that you'd be including Hamilton-Brown as well, with Brown or Wright batting as low as 8 - would have trouble unless the wicket was very green and spiteful. Wright isn't much more than a change bowler these days and couldn't get through long spells of stock bowling, and the same is true of Nash. If you don't want the variety and possible containment that Zaidi offers, and I'm not defending his performances this year, then perhaps Hatchett is worth having in all seam attack, and that would allow for Wright and Nash to bowl a few overs and maybe break a partnership.

But we were prepared to go into the last match with just the three front line bowlers, plus Zaidi, Wright and Nash. Wells could also bowl a few overs if needed. I appreciate what you're saying, it might be risky going into a four day match with just three front line bowlers, although we did against Lancs, but I would be very surprised if we saw even three days play.

What to do? Play Hatchett as well as the other seamers and have Anyon or Lewis at No 8? Go for 3 bowlers plus some backup as jonboy suggests and instead pack the side with batsmen? Or keep Zaidi one more time for variety and drop....Hamilton Brown? Not an easy call, regardless of weather.

Unfortunately, I suspect it will be the latter. Weather forecasts are often wrong, but it looks to me like we won't get four full days of uninterrupted play. Realistically, if we are to bowl them out twice, we aren't gonna need a full quota of bowlers. A more likely scenario, is rain interrupted draw. With five batting points up for grabs, and only three bowling, I would have thought it's the perfect opportunity to strengthen our fragile middle order. Not suggesting that this should be the norm, more of a horses for courses approach to try and glean as many points as we can, from what is likely to be, a rain ravaged match

If the weather is very iffy for the full 4 days but there is likely to be some play from time to time, under heavy skies and with plenty of showers to keep the wicket freshened up, then I think we would want a full hand of bowlers, equipped for all eventualities and attack. Rather than the 5 batting/3 bowling points and 5 for the draw, I would always want to go for the chance of a 16 point win, plus whatever else can be gleaned. After all, in the Middlesex game there were only effectively 2 full days played: 2 sessions onb the Sunday, all 3 on Tuesday and 1 on Wednesday. And Sussex won through having a strong hand of bowling, plus batting that came throiugh when it mattered. Going for the draw from the start condemns all chance of a win, and if the batting is as fragile as you think - which I don't agree with - then there probably won't be the maximum 5, particularly if Durham deploy their attack effectively. Anyway, the next few hours will see which of us is closer to the actualite!

Certainly having the option of Zaidi makes little difference

Nash out off a clear no ball. Sitting square on and rushworth was 3 to 6 inches over the line
