It's gonna be a long summer without Chris Jordan, who incidentally, was playing for the seconds today, as was Arafat. Lost the first game to MCC young cricketers.

That was a shocking example of the suffocation of county cricket. The refusal of Collingwood to seek to provide entertainment and the unreasonable dictat of the ECB to deprive us of Jordan. And they will use declining audiences to argue for still greater marginalisation of 4 day cricket going forward.

Championship cricket continues to isolate itself in a bubble - far removed from the real 21st century world. The ECB fund it in order to produce England players, so there's no pressure on the counties to provide entertainment in this format. If it had to stand on its own feet, it would be laughed out of the marketplace - it's very sad.

I don't think Ed Joyce would have chosen any differently, given the same offer. You may be right, lawnmower. For the avoidance of doubt (as the lawyers say), I was criticising the County Cricket culture and structure - not individual captains.
