Two big positives emerged from the match against the Pakistanis: the opening partnership of Finch and Wells and the exciting promise of Jofra Archer. The former is very timely as Joyce should be away with the Ireland squad playing a series of short-form internatioinals against Afghanistan. In the latter case Archer becomes part of a quite exciting array of young pace bowlers unthought of at the start of the season when we were mourning the loss of Matt Hobden, the retirement of Anyon, and the deprivation for large parts of the season of Jordan as a strike force. Now is the time to jettison all these ridiculous ideas of playing Beer and Briggs and concentrate on an attack that ought to outgun Kent - especially if, as borderman tells us, they are without their own loose cannon Matt Coles.
For batting I suggest that Wells be temporarily restored to open with Nash. I think the moves down the order have done him good and longer term it would be best to seek an experienced player as replacement for Joyce and let Wells develop his new, dependable qualities further down the lists, but he is undoubtedly in form now and should have the chance. Then Taylor should step up to 3 and show us why we spent big money on him. He owes us runs and this is his last first class opportunity to show Test quality. That would give a further opportunity for Finch to cement a place, probably at 4, and a last chance for Machan at 6 to keep his when Joyce returns.
Four good pace bowlers, with Wells and possibly Nash to help out and keep the over rate ticking over - and possibly for Wells to make breakthroughs - should be sufficient. Garton ought to be back in the first class team and after he comes back from the England Lions series he should be, and then we should have some exciting competition for places in the team.

I doubt both Archer and Whittingham will play. I'd like to see Robinson in place of one of them but it could be Shahzad. Equally it could be five bowlers in which case Finch or Machan drops out.
I certainly wouldn't play Beer or Briggs. I've seen every match at T Wells in the last goodness knows how many years and I don't recall seeing spinners prosper very often - even when Saeed Ajmal was bamboozling county cricketers all over the country, he struggled at the Nevill Gound when Worcs were the visitors a few seasons ago. It will have to be down to the spin twins Wells and Nash to keep the over rate up to the mark.
Don't know about Coles. He's suspended for a month and his offence was on June 18/19, so if they stick to the letter - and this is Kent so they probably will - he should still be suspended (or 'unavailable' as they euphemsitically put it).
It will certainly be a weakened Kent side without him. Rabada will take wickets but after that there is nothing in the seam department. Stevens at 40 is a busted flush and only a threat with the new cherry for a few overs. As soon as the ball stops wobbling he can bowl all day without taking a wicket. Haggett is injured and Griffith is like Mills, too crocked to play anything but white ball. Of the rest, Claydon is an honest journeyman who tried hard but takes his wickets at around 40 apiece and tends to go for 4-5 runs an over. Then there are the fringe/second XI seamers like Thomas, who I think is injured, and Hunn and Hartley, both of whom will probably be released in September as they aren't good enough for f/c cricket.
All in all, after Rabada and Jordan have been seen off, it should be a run fest on both sides. I'd guess Sussex and Kent have probably been smacked for more runs this season than any of the other 16 counties (I counted how many times Sussex have conceded more than 400 runs in the first innings the other day and I think it was more times than they've bowled sides out for less than 400...and Essex took Kent for 569 last week at Chelmsford).
Kent have a few gaps in the batting, too. Bell-Drummond and Billings will be missing with the Lions, the Kiwi opener Latham can't play because they will prefer Rabada, and Stevens has barely scored a run all season. And the reserve keeper Rouse in injured so Callum Jackson will keep wicket. Northeast, however, is in cracking form.
So with Bell-Drummond, Billings, Latham, Coles, Haggett, Rouse, Thomas and Griffith all "unavailable" for various reasons, a weakened Kent might look something like this:-
Dickson Denly Ball Northeast Blake Stevens Jackson Tredwell Claydon Rabada an other seamer (Hartley? Hunn? Weller?)

My Sussex XI would be Nash, Finch, Wells, Taylor, Wright, Machan, Brown, Jordan, Archer, Magoffin, Whittingham
Kent XI: Dickson, Denly, Northeast *, Stevens, Blake, Cowdrey, Ball, Tredwell, Jackson (+), Rabada, Claydon
Will both be released? I suspect neither will. Hartley has 29 wickets @ 26 for the 2XI and Hunn has 14 wickets @ 27 and both are 22.

Update : according to the Kent messageboard, Hartley has already been told he is being released at the end of the season...

Hunn? Weller?) Kent's 'unavailable' list grows ever longer. Hunn is also injured ,Fabian Cowdrey has appendicitis and Coles' suspension is longer than anyone thought and runs until the end of July, by which time Rabada will have gone. They seem determined that Rabada and Coles will never share the new ball , which is great for Div Two opening batsmen but disastrous for Kent ... Therefore almost certain line-up as above with Ball at three and I'd guess Weller at eleven. They haven't really got anyone else, aaprt from Adam Riley who seems to have lost it totally and is struggling to not much effect in the seconds. Sussex also look to be much weakened without Joyce. hhs reckoned: Nash Wells Taylor Finch Wright Machan Brown Jordan Archer Magoffin Whittingham But I can't see how Taylor will be playing. NZ have their first warm-up game on their tour of Zim/SA next Friday. So Salt or Cachopa will have to come in ...

I haven't seen any indication that he has left yet, and South Africa is not that many hours flying time away and only two hours ahead, so he could leave on Wednesday night. But if he does go earlier, perhaps after this Friday's T20, Salt would be my preference for the next cab off the rank.

Interesting. Taylor must have some special dispensation from NZ board because the rest of the squad is already there , including most of the NZ players from county cricket. I know Kent lost Tom Latham to the Kiwi touring party several days ago.
on edit: Guptill also appears to have dispensation as he's still in the Carib playing for Guyana Amazons...

To all at Sussex. Will be down at the lovely Nevill Ground later in the day as my lad is playing in a double header to win the league and cup for Otford cricket U-15. Looking forward to seeing my two local sides do battle. So I will be down by the pavilion at sometime in the afternoon. difficult to say how this one will go. Agree with BM that Kent seem pretty toothless without Matt Coles. Shame that I suspect his time in a Kent shirt is going to be pretty limited. With opening with Rabada, Kent would have a really potent attack. Not sure how much more Stevo's got in him, particularly when Kent insist on bowling for over 20 overs in a day!

Good luck to Dominic and Otford U-15s, longhops. See you there Sunday afternoon, hopefully celebrating Otford's triumph. May be see both of you at the Nevill this afternoon for the T20 v Surrey, too? I see Kent are flagging up the problems of staging a festival week at Tunbridge Wells next season in high summer as the new style fixture list, playing the different forms in blocks, will probably prevent the four day game + one T20 festival programme. Sussex will have the same problem with Arundel, I guess.

Sussex will have the same problem with Arundel, I guess. The alternative would be to have the franchise games taking place in one block, whilst the rest of the summer could be devoted to the 4 day games plus the residual county T20 games, which could then be arranged on a sensible regional basis to allow for making the best of the outground festival weeks, so valuable not just in terms of a one-off crowd but for retaining loyalty. It does mean that these festival games would have to take place outside of that block period, but June and August fixtures would be equally popular at Arundel, Horsham, Tunbridge Wells and places where they sing,

Still thoroughly perplexed by his lack of cricket for firsts or seconds of late but there you are. He needs to be wrapped up a bit, sure, but not mummified. I wouldn't move Wells. Three tons in his new position so why put him back to where he struggled? The man to come in has just hit a ton as an opener so that's all you need to know. It's nice to agree with a CP post too so well done CP, you are finally right.
